Semantic anomaly detection in school-aged children during natural sentence reading : A study of fixation-related brain potentials

In this study, we investigated the effects of context-related semantic anomalies on the fixation-related brain potentials of 12–13-year-old Finnish children in grade 6 during sentence reading. The detection of such anomalies is typically reflected in the N400 event-related potential. We also examined whether the representation invoked by the sentence context extends to the orthographic representation level by replacing the final words of the sentence with an anomalous word neighbour of a plausible word. Abstract Background Mitochondrial dysfunction is a critical factor in the onset and progression of neurodegenerative diseases. Recently, mitochondrial transplantation has been advised as an innovative and attractive strategy to transfer and replace damaged mitochondria. Electrical brain activity and facial electromyography responses to irony in dysphoric and non-dysphoric participants

We studied irony comprehension and emotional reactions to irony in dysphoric and control participants. Electroencephalography (EEG) and facial electromyography (EMG) were measured when spoken conversations were presented with pictures that provided either congruent (non-ironic) or incongruent (ironic) contexts. In a separate session, participants evaluated the congruency and valence of the stimuli. While both groups rated ironic stimuli funnier than non-ironic stimuli, the control group rated all the stimuli funnier than the dysphoric group. An electrophysiological study of print processing in kindergarten: the contribution of the visual n1 as a predictor of reading outcome.

Sensitivity to print is characterized by a left occipito-temporal negativity to words in the event-related potential N1. This sensitivity is modulated by reading skills and may thus represent a neural marker of reading competence. Here we studied the development of the N1 in regular and poor readers from preschool age to school age to test whether the amplitude of the N1 predicts children's reading outcomes. Our results suggest a predictive value of the print-sensitive negativity over the right hemisphere. Whether this N1 may serve as a biomarker to improve prognosis in preliterate children should be clarified in future studies.
Gentamicin alters Akt-expression and its activation in the guinea pig cochlea

Gentamicin treatment induces hair cell death or survival in the inner ear. Besides the well-known toxic effects, the phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase/Akt (PI3K/Akt) pathway was found to be involved in cell protection. After gentamicin application, the spatiotemporal expression patterns of Akt and its activated form (p-Akt) were determined in male guinea pigs. Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) is thought to exert its peripheral analgesic effects via inhibition of cyclooxygenase. We now studied the effects of ASA on heat responses in primary nociceptive neurons by whole-cell patch-clamp and calcium microfluorimetry experiments. Heat-evoked inward currents in acutely dissociated rat dorsal root ganglion neurons were significantly reduced by ASA in a dose-dependent and reversible manner (IC(50) 375 nM, Hill slope -2.2, maximum effect 55%). The actions of three clinically effective antidepressant drugs with different pharmacological profiles were investigated in the CA1 area of rat hippocampal slices. Imipramine and (+) or (-)-oxaprotiline had negligible effects on population spikes evoked by stratum radiatum stimulation, but reduced postsynaptic excitability in low Ca high Mg medium after an exposure of more than 15 min. Imipramine and (+)-oxaprotiline at 10 mumol/l enhanced long-term potentiation (LTP) when a lower stimulation strength was applied while (+)-oxaprotiline reduced LTP when a higher stimulus amplitude was used to evoke population spikes. This study addresses the question whether K(+) channels are involved in the vasorelaxant effects of 3-(5'-hydroxymethyl-2'-furyl)-1-benzyl-indazole (YC-1 ). In rat aorta, guinea pig aorta, and guinea pig a. carotis, YC-1 inhibited contractions induced by phenylephrine (3 microM) more potently than those induced by K(+)(48 mM). The effects induced on the discharge of subthalamic spontaneously active neurons by inhibiting the enzyme nitric oxide synthase was studied in two groups of urethane-anesthetized rats. In the first group of animals (n = 10), the activity of subthalamic single units was recorded before and after the systemic administration of 7-nitro-indazole (7-NI, 50 mg/kg i.p.), a selective inhibitor of neuronal nitric oxide synthase.
