Grammar types in language explain tone sequence processing in music

In this ERP study, linear and center-embedded musical sequences are built according to two artificial grammar types in language, named finite state grammar (FSG) and phrase structure grammar (PSG). The aim is to prove if neural sources and processing mechanisms for artificial grammar settings across domains are the same. Isochronous pitch sequences were constructed by two interval categories (3rd and 6th) in upward and downward direction. FSG sequences, which have the general form ABAB in artificial grammar, are translated into “small up/small down/large up/large down”. Previous studies have reported lowered implicit self‐esteem at the behavioral level among depressed individuals. However, brain responses related to the lowered implicit self‐esteem have not been investigated in people with depression. Automatic auditory and somatosensory brain responses in relation to cognitive abilities and physical fitness in older adults

AbstractIn normal ageing, structural and functional changes in the brain lead to an altered processing of sensory stimuli and to changes in cognitive functions. The link between changes in sensory processing and cognition is not well understood, but physical fitness is suggested to be beneficial for both. We recorded event-related potentials to somatosensory and auditory stimuli in a passive change detection paradigm from 81 older and 38 young women and investigated their associations with cognitive performance. Monovalent cation conductance in Xenopus laevis oocytes expressing hCAT-3

hCAT-3 (human cationic amino acid transporter type three) was investigated with both the two-electrode voltage clamp method and tracer experiments. Oocytes expressing hCAT-3 displayed less negative membrane potentials and larger voltage-dependent currents than native or water-injected oocytes did. Ion substitution experiments in hCAT-3-expressing oocytes revealed a large conductance for Na + and K + . In the presence of l-Arg, voltage-dependent inward and outward currents were observed. Mismatch negativity (MMN) is a scalp-recorded electrical potential that occurs in humans in response to an auditory stimulus that defies previously established patterns of regularity. MMN amplitude is reduced in people with schizophrenia.
