Morphology and evolution of the oral shield in marsupial neonates including the newborn monito del monte (Dromiciops gliroides, Marsupialia Microbiot…

2017

International audience; Newborn marsupials can be arranged into three grades of developmental complexity based on their external form, as well as based on their organ systems and their cytology. The dasyurids are considered the least developed marsupials at birth, while didelphids and peramelids are intermediate, and macropods are the most developed. Currently there is still little information on caenolestid and microbiotherid development at birth. Developmental stages can be graded as G1, G2 and G3, with G1 being the least developed at birth, and G3 the most developed. Marsupials are also characterized by having an extremely developed craniofacial region at birth compared with placentals. …

Crystal inclusions in subepithelial fibroblasts of the brood pouch of sea horses (hippocampus kuda)

1968

In the subepithelial connective tissue of the inactive broodpouch of sea horses (Hippocampus kuda), fibroblasts with striking crystal inclusions are described light microscopically and electron microscopically in the tunica adventitia of capillaries. These very electron dense crystals turn out to be hexagonal prisms of heterogeneous structures. Results of the X-ray microanalysis and comparison with other crystalline cell inclusions so far described allow the conclusion that they contain an iron protein stored as crystals. The structure and genesis of these crystals as well as the possible importance of the iron protein for the biology of these animals are discussed.

Rectosigmoid Pouch (Mainz Pouch II) in Children

2005

Continent anal urinary diversion is a therapeutic option in bladder exstrophy. We report our long-term results with the rectosigmoid pouch (Mainz pouch II), a modification of the classic ureterosigmoidostomy.A total of 38 children with a mean age of 5 years (range 0.5 to 17) underwent a Mainz pouch II procedure between 1991 and 2004. Most patients (33) had bladder exstrophy or incontinent epispadias. In 14 children (37%) urinary diversion was performed after failed primary reconstruction. In 6 children conversion was performed from an incontinent type of urinary diversion. Renal function, continence and metabolic changes were analyzed. A total of 35 children were followed for a mean of 112 …

Sigma-rectum pouch (Mainz pouch II).

1993

A substantial modification of the classic technique of ureterosigmoidostomy is introduced in this article. To date, this procedure has been used in 47 patients. This article reviews the surgical technique of the antemesenterial splitting of the intestine at the recto-sigmoid junction which creates a pouch by subsequent side-to-side anastomosis.

A Prospective Audit of the Complications of Loop Ileostomy Construction and Takedown

2004

<i>Aim:</i> A prospective review of the complications of ileostomy construction and takedown. <i>Materials and Methods:</i> One hundred twenty-seven consecutive patients undergoing construction of a loop ileostomy were included in a prospective nonrandomized computer database. Complications of the loop ileostomy were assessed prior to and after closure. Three closure techniques were performed [enterotomy suture (25.7%), resection and hand sewn (31.2%) or stapled anastomosis (43.1%)] and compared. <i>Results:</i> One hundred twenty-seven (73 male, 54 female) patients, mean age 54 years were included from 1992 to 2002. Seventy-two patients underwent anterio…

Differences in ano-neorectal physiology of ileoanal and coloanal reconstructions for restorative proctectomy

2010

Objective  Restorative proctectomy with straight coloanal anastomosis (CAA) and restorative proctocolectomy with ilealpouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) are options for maintaining bowel integrity after rectal resection. The aim of this study was to compare clinical function and anorectal physiology in patients treated with CAA and IPAA. Method  Three-dimensional vector-manometry and neorectal volumetry were performed in straight CAA [53 patients (34 male)] and IPAA [61 patients (39 male)] for ulcerative colitis. Function was assessed using a 14 day incontinence diary. Results  Function was similar in both groups, but neorectal compliance and threshold volumes for sensation, urge and maximum tol…

Involvement of secretory phospholipase A2 activity in the zymosan rat air pouch model of inflammation.

1996

1. In the zymosan rat air pouch model of inflammation we have assessed the time dependence of phospholipase A2 (PLA2) accumulation in the inflammatory exudates as well as cell migration, myeloperoxidase activity, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and leukotriene B4 (LTB4) levels. 2. A significant increase in PLA2 activity was detected in 1,200 g supernatants of exudates 8 h after injection of zymosan into rat air pouch. This event coincided with peaks in cell accumulation (mainly neutrophils) and myeloperoxidase activity in exudates and was preceded by a rise in eicosanoid levels. 3. This enzyme (without further purification) behaved as a secretory type II PLA2 with an optimum pH at 7-8 units, lack o…

Treatment of Iatrogenic Functional or Morphologic Bladder Loss

1988

From 1984 to 1986, six children from 4 to 13 years of age, received a bladder augmentation by ileocecal cystoplasty (Mainz-pouch technique) because of an iatrogenic functional or morphologic bladder loss. Indications for operation were incontinence due to the low bladder capacity or threat to the upper urinary tract due to ureteral obstruction or vesicorenal reflux. Two of the children had already undergone supravesical urinary diversion by sigmoid conduit. After a follow-up period of 2 to 19 months, (mean 11 months), five of the six children are completely continent. One boy with a known weak sphincter still has slight, but decreasing, enuresis nocturna in periods of complete filling of th…

Colon pouch (Mainz III) for continent urinary diversion

2007

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the use of a continent cutaneous pouch made exclusively of colon (Mainz pouch III), as excellent results with the Mainz pouch III in irradiated patients suggested that the indication for this type of urinary diversion could be extended. PATIENTS AND METHODS The outcome of 24 patients with continent cutaneous urinary diversions using colon segments (Mainz pouch III) was investigated retrospectively. Overall, 22 of the patients had a malignant disease and two a benign disease; 16 had a hysterectomy and pelvic exenteration for gynaecological tumours; two men with a rhabdomyosarcoma of the prostate had a radical cystoprostatectomy; one woman had pelvic exenteration for bla…

Rhabdomyosarcoma of the bladder, prostate or vagina: the role of surgery

2003

Rhabdomyosarcoma of pelvic organs is not common enough for many people to develop large series. However, the authors from Mainz retrospectively analysed 107 children with this condition, and suggest that primary chemotherapy followed by radical surgery yields excellent cure rates. OBJECTIVE To retrospectively analyse the outcome of children with rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) of the bladder, prostate or vagina who were treated with chemotherapy, with or without radical surgery or additional radiotherapy, at our institution since 1968. PATIENTS AND METHODS From a total of 107 children with RMS seen between 1968 and December 2001, 22 (mean age 5.9, range 0.5–18) had RMS of bladder/prostate or vagina.…
