Cylindrical Cell-Based Refractometers to Analyse Biomedical Liquids

Compact device of high sensitivity for measurement of the refractive indices of both stationary and flowing liquids has been developed. This device can be used to analyse a variety of biomedical liquids: urine, serum protein. The refractive index (RI) is determined by measuring the deviation of a laser beam passing through a cylindrical cell containing the test liquid. In order to significantly improve the resolution and stability of RI measurements, the repeated reflections and refractions of the light beam travelling through the cylindrical cell are employed.

In a previous study, we reported a new bioactive sesquiterpenoid, named dysidotronic acid, to be a potent, selective human synovial phospholipase A(2) inhibitor. Dysidotronic acid is a novel, non-complex manoalide analogue lacking the pyranofuranone ring. We now investigate the effect of this compound on cytokine, nitric oxide and prostanoid generation on the mouse macrophage cell line RAW 264.7, where it showed a dose-dependent inhibition with inhibitory concentration 50% values in the micromolar range. In female alates of Macrotermes annandalei, two types of abdominal glands are involved in the secretion of sex pheromone. Tergal glands are found at the anterior margin of tergites 6-10 and posterior sternal glands (PSGs) are located at the anterior margin of sternites 6-7. The cytological features of both types of glands are quite similar. The fine structural organization of PSGs is studied more precisely and described for the first time. In a canine model of the Mainz pouch, intracavitary pressure and compliance were measured during instillation of isosmotic and hyperosmotic (900 mmol/kg water) solutions of saline. Wall properties of small- and large-bowel segments of the pouch were assessed individually by sonomicrometry. Intraluminal pressures increased more steeply during filling with hyperosmotic solution, resulting in reduced distensibility of small- and large-bowel segments. Additionally, instillation of the hyperosmotic solution resulted in increased amplitudes and frequency of intracavitary pressure waves. Chronic cervicitis, bulky nabothian cysts, adenomyomas, niches (cesarean scar defects), congenital malformations, and pseudo-neoplastic glandular cervical lesions often raise diagnostic dilemmas; they may also mimic malignant lesions [1–4].
