2016

Young People’s Ambiguous and Complex Responses on HIV/AIDS in Cameroon

2017

In the large cities of Cameroon, early sexual relations are a major problem for young people due to the risk of unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS, in this population that has not yet mastered protection and which is ill prepared to convince often older sexual partners to use condoms. The HIV/AIDS epidemic can be analysed as an exogenous trauma that has not given rise to an immediate national response at institutional level, in spite of the pressure and priorities imposed from outside. The survey was aimed at understanding how young people build the idea of protection and risk faced with HIV, and identifying their practices and their relations with protective pract…

Summary Background Population estimates underpin demographic and epidemiological research and are used to track progress on numerous international indicators of health and development. To date, internationally available estimates of population and fertility, although useful, have not been produced with transparent and replicable methods and do not use standardised estimates of mortality. We present single-calendar year and single-year of age estimates of fertility and population by sex with standardised and replicable methods. Methods We estimated population in 195 locations by single year of age and single calendar year from 1950 to 2017 with standardised and replicable methods. We based t…

Summary Background Efforts to establish the 2015 baseline and monitor early implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlight both great potential for and threats to improving health by 2030. To fully deliver on the SDG aim of "leaving no one behind", it is increasingly important to examine the health-related SDGs beyond national-level estimates. As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD 2017), we measured progress on 41 of 52 health-related SDG indicators and estimated the health-related SDG index for 195 countries and territories for the period 1990–2017, projected indicators to 2030, and analysed global attainment. Methods …

Employment and Local Development Policies as Instruments of Social Inclusion: An Empirical Evaluation of Their Scope

2012

Energy poverty in Italy

2014

Despite the existence of two targeted national programmes (Bonus gas and Bonus energia) in Italy there is no official definition of energy poverty (EP). The purpose of this study is to provide the reader with a set of indicators to fill this gap. We present a range of poverty measures which estimate that between 5 and 20 per cent of households was in EP in 2012. A selection based on qualitative criteria suggests the use of a low-income/high-costs indicator modified to include the economically vulnerable households with no heating expenses. According to this statistic the proportion of households in EP during the period 1997-2012 was broadly stable at around 8 per cent. Our simul…

Malaria, poverty and medical treatment in the district of Agrigento (1830–1836)

1998

It is kown that the destruction of woods has been the reason of the beginning of"malaria". In the Middle Age there was a lot of forests in Sicily. In the province of Agrigento malaria was already kown especially in Cammarata in 1141; in the area of Burgic in 1172; in Licata in 1398 adin the south of Girgenti (Girgenti was the ancient name of Agrigento) in 1253. Huge expenses of water determined, between 1256 and 1379, the fight against malaria. In the XV and XV1 centuries the destruction of the Sicilian forests could be said systematically begun by the landowners, that had destined the land to the production of wheat. Then, the area of Agrigento was the place where the surviving vegetation …
