Large scale synthesis of nanostructured zirconia-based compounds from freeze-dried precursors

2013

Nanocrystalline zirconia powders have been obtained at the multigram scale by thermal decomposition of precursors resulting from the freeze-drying of aqueous acetic solutions. This technique has equally made possible to synthesize a variety of nanostructured yttria or scandia doped zirconia compositions. SEM images, as well as the analysis of the XRD patterns, show the nanoparticulated character of those solids obtained at low temperature, with typical particle size in the 10–15 nm range when prepared at 673 K. The presence of the monoclinic, the tetragonal or both phases depends on the temperature of the thermal treatment, the doping concentration and the nature of the dopant. In addition,…

Jet-vortex spray freeze drying for the production of inhalable lyophilisate powders

2016

Abstract Spray-freeze-dried powders were suggested for nasal, epidermal (needle-free injection) or pulmonary application of proteins, peptides or nucleic acids. In spray-freeze-drying processes an aqueous solution is atomized into a refrigerant medium and subsequently dried by sublimation. Droplet-stream generators produce a fast stream of monodisperse droplets, where droplets are subject to collisions and therefore the initial monodispersity is lost and droplets increase in diameter, which reduces their suitability for pulmonary application. In jet-vortex-freezing, a droplet-stream is injected into a vortex of cold process gas to prevent droplet collisions. Both the injection position of t…

Comparison between a Uniaxial Compaction Tester and a Shear Tester for the Characterization of Powder Flowability

2014

The complete characterization of powder flow properties with shear cells is a long and time-consuming process that requires specially trained operators or costly automated instruments. For these reasons, in industrial practice, the use of simpler and less extensive measurement by uniaxial compaction testers is often preferred. However, previous studies in the literature indicate that the results of the two techniques are not directly comparable due to the different stress state conditions achieved in the two testers. In this study, an experimental campaign to measure the flow function of five different powders with a ring shear tester (RST) and a uniaxial compaction tester (UCT) was performe…

Continuous hydrothermal synthesis of nanometric BaZrO3 in supercritical water

2007

Abstract Nanocrystalline barium zirconate (BaZrO 3 ) was synthesized using a hydrothermal synthesis process working in supercritical conditions and in a continuous way. By this method, we succeeded in the continuous and rapid production of nanopowders. As a preliminary work three barium precursors have been investigated: barium hydroxide (Ba(OH) 2 ), barium acetate (Ba(CH 3 COO) 2 ) and barium nitrate (Ba(NO 3 ) 2 ). Two of them (Ba(CH 3 COO) 2 and Ba(NO 3 ) 2 ) led to the pure perovskite phase. Then an experimental design has been conducted in order to determine the influence of the experimental parameters on the crystallinity and the grain size of the final product.

Evidence for a Double Doping Regime in Nd:YAG nanopowders

2009

Nanopowders of Yttrium Aluminium Garnet doped with neodymium (Nd:YAG) were investigated by X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) at the Nd LIII-edge in the 1.3 - 20.8 % doping range. XANES spectra appear similar in the full range of the Nd concentration. However, a significant decrease in the white line intensity of XANES is revealed as the quantity of Nd doping ions increases. Plotting the white line intensity as a function of Nd doping ions reveals two linear trends with two different slopes, identifying a threshold value where the neodymium concentration reaches 5 at.% This experimental finding provides support for the existence of a double doping regime in Nd:YAG nanopowders.

Beta-forging of Ti6Al4V titanium alloy powders consolidated by HIP: Plastic flow and strain-rate relation

2014

Ti6Al4V is probably the best known and studied titanium alloy, not only for aerospace applications. Nevertheless the deformation behavior still represents a challenge if any modification in the deformation process is required or introduced. This work deals with deformation behavior description of Ti6Al4V HIPped powders during high temperature deformation tests carried on in the Beta-region. Laboratory compression and tensile tests have been coupled with relaxation tests in order to achieve robust data about strain rate sensibility m-coefficient and activation energy Q. These results have been fitted for the assessment of a more general exponential deformation law. The final result is a “Dor…

Synthesis of Nd:YAG nanopowder using the citrate method with microwave irradiation

2010

Abstract Nd:YAG nanopowders were prepared using the Pechini process with microwave irradiation ( MWs ). A reference sample was also prepared using conventional heating. XRD pattern analysis showed that nanopowder obtained by means of conventional heating and calcination for 1 h at 900 °C has a structure made up of the garnet phase together with the hexagonal phase that disappeared after two additional hours of thermal treatment. The MWs powder calcined for 1 h consists of the single garnet phase. SAXS data analysis indicated that nanoparticles are characterized by a sharp interface. TEM investigation showed crystalline particles with remarkable agglomeration in both samples, although a more…

Microstructure and mechanical properties of plasma spraying coatings from YSZ feedstocks comprising nano-and submicron-sized particles

2015

Atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) is an attractive technique to obtain nanostructured coatings due to its versatility, simplicity and relatively low cost. However, nanoparticles cannot be fed into the plasma using conventional feeding systems, due to their low mass and poor flowability, and must be adequately reconstituted into sprayable micrometric agglomerates. In this work, nanostructured and submicron/nanostiuctured powders of yttria-stabilised zirconia (YSZ) were deposited using APS, with a view to obtaining high-performance thermal bather coatings (IBC). All powders were reconstituted by spray-drying from different solid loading suspensions, followed by a thermal treatment of the spra…

Co-precipitation synthesis of neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium oxides nanopowders: Quantitative phase investigation as a function of joint isotherma…

2007

Abstract Neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium nanopowders with nominal Nd:Y:Al ratio equal to X:3–X:5 (where X = 0, 0.006, 0.012, 0.024, 0.048, 0.081, 0.096, 0.171, 0.192, 0.384, 0.540 and 0.720) were prepared by the co-precipitation method and subjected to five cumulative stages of isothermal treatment in the temperature range from 900 to 1050 °C. The phase evolution of the oxides were investigated quantitatively by the X-ray powder diffraction approach using the Rietveld method of analysis. An almost single phase cubic garnet structure was attained at temperatures as low as 900 °C for specimens with neodymium loading less than ca. 6 at.% with respect to total (Nd + Y) atoms. Isothermal treat…

Microbiological Profile and Bioactive Properties of Insect Powders Used in Food and Feed Formulations

2019

Microbiological, nutritional and bioactive properties of edible powders obtained from Acheta domesticus (house cricket) and Tenebrio molitor (mealworm) were investigated. Except for the enterobacteria, viable bacteria were at a higher concentration in mealworm flour. The diversity evaluation carried out using MiSeq Illumina that mainly identified Citrobacter and Enterobacteriaceae in mealworm powder and members of the Porphyromonadaceae family in house cricket powder. Enterococci were identified and characterized for their safety characteristics in terms of the absence of antibiotic resistance and virulence. Both powders represent a good source of proteins and lipids. The fatty acid profile…
