Influence of ANN parameters on the performance of a refined procedure to solve the load-flow problem
1999
In recent years, interest in the application of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to electrical power systems has grown rapidly. In particular the use of ANN in the solution of the load-flow problem in wide electrical networks is an interesting research topic, because it constitutes a good alternative to the classical numerical algorithms. In this paper a refined solution strategy based on statistical methods, on a particular Grouping Genetic Algorithm (GGA) and on Progressive Learning Network (PLN) is presented. Tests on the solution of load-flow equations of the standard IEEE 118 bus network confirm the good potential of this approach; in particular the search for optimal values of the PLN…
Power-Line Communication in Medium-Voltage System: Simulation Model and Onfield Experimental Tests
2012
The aim of this paper is to develop a complete model of a power-line communication (PLC) system operating on a medium-voltage (MV) network. The core-shield configuration was chosen for signal transmission in the power cables. In order to validate the developed model experimental, the medium-voltage network of the Favignana island was used to carry out detailed testing. The transmission was performed between two transformer substations in the presence of mains voltage (i.e., 24 kV). ST7540 FSK power-line transceivers, together with capacitive coupling interfaces, were used for the transmission and the reception of the communication signal. The correlation between the experimental measurement…
Priority Based Coordinated Electric Vehicle Charging System for Heterogeneous Traffic
2020
Despite the environmental and health merits associated with Electric vehicles (EVs), a massive deployment of EVs tends to create new technical and economic challenges for power systems. This is being addressed with different coordinated charging schemes where the charging coordination is distributed across multiple EVs and/or aggregators based on different objectives. This work analyzes an algorithm which maximize the operational profit of a charging station with a high charging station utilization while adhering all the constraints enforced by the utility grid. And it is analyzed the performance of the coordinated charging scheme which facilitates heterogeneous EV users whose arrival is un…
Life Cycle Assessment Performance Comparison of Small Solar Thermal Cooling Systems with Conventional Plants Assisted with Photovoltaics
2012
Abstract Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) allows for the consideration of energy consumption and environmental impacts associated with all the stages of a product's life, from the cradle to the grave . Starting from the results obtained in the IEA SHC Task 38 framework for the LCA of small solar assisted heat driven chillers, the application of such methodology has been extended to systems with a conventional compression chiller assisted by a photovoltaic plant. This study aims to provide a more comprehensive investigation through a comparison of these two families of solar assisted cooling systems (with solar thermal or PV), which is an important topic for studies concerning the research of eff…
Life cycle performance assessment of small solar thermal cooling systems and conventional plants assisted with photovoltaics
2014
Starting from the results of a Life Cycle Assessment of small solar assisted heat driven chillers, the application of such methodology has been extended to systems with a conventional compression chiller assisted by a photovoltaic plant (PV). This study aims to provide a comprehensive compared investigation of these two families of solar assisted cooling systems (with solar thermal or PV). Results indicate that, in many cases, the systems with the PV grid connected plant performed best. In addition, two more configurations were investigated to further define the PV assisted systems, which minimise their interaction with the grid through the use of electricity storages. These systems performed…
DAQs-based wattmeters for high accuracy measurements. Comparison with the Italian power primary standard
2013
Abstract This paper is focused on the use of data acquisition boards (DAQs) for the development of high accuracy PC-based instruments for the measurements of electrical power. The proposed systems are simple, portable and low cost because they are based on commercial data acquisition boards (DAQs) connected to a common personal computer. Data processing is carried out by a commercial software based on an interpolating windowed FFT. In the paper it is shown how the voltage can be sensed directly, thanks to the DAQ input range, thus avoiding expensive voltage dividers. The set up of the DAQs-based solutions is described and the evaluation of their metrological features is made by means of a c…
A new low cost power line communication solution for smart grid monitoring and management
2018
Modern smart grids require the improvement of measurement and communication infrastructures of distribution networks, at both medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV) levels. Distributed sensing and measurement systems are needed to provide all necessary data for grid monitoring, control and management, as well as for the implementation of a number of smart functionalities, such as remote control of distributed generators (DGs), real time analysis of power flows, automatic meter reading (AMR), demand side management (DSM), grid automation and so on [1]-[6]. Acquired network data include typical electrical network quantities and status variables (such as powers, voltages, currents, switches …
A new approach to partial discharge detection under DC voltage
2018
The continuing development of HVDC power transmission systems presents many problems related to evaluation of the reliability of power system assets [1]-[5]. In this context the identification of insulation defects plays a key role in preventing unexpected failures of electrical components. Partial discharge (PD) measurement is a useful approach to assessing the condition of HV power apparatus and cables. Such measurements are also widely employed for HVAC systems. The inception mechanisms of PD in AC systems are well-known, and measurements are usually performed following the IEC 60270 standard [6]. PD measurements under DC voltage present complexities related to the nature of the phenomen…
A framework to determine maximum capacity of interconnecting DGs in distribution networks
2018
Interconnecting Distributed Generation (DG) in the distribution network is considered as an important area of power system planning. When the DG placed inappropriately, the DG can have negative impact on some important and critical characteristics of system performance such as increased power losses, degraded voltage profile, and mis-coordination between protection devices. This paper introduces a framework to determine the maximum capacity limits of interconnecting DG units in radial distribution networks in order to keep protection scheme unchanged, while the voltage profile remains within acceptable range and on the same time having the minimum power losses in the network; applying this …
A review of thermochemical energy storage systems for power grid support
2020
Power systems in the future are expected to be characterized by an increasing penetration of renewable energy sources systems. To achieve the ambitious goals of the “clean energy transition”, energy storage is a key factor, needed in power system design and operation as well as power-to-heat, allowing more flexibility linking the power networks and the heating/cooling demands. Thermochemical systems coupled to power-to-heat are receiving an increasing attention due to their better performance in comparison with sensible and latent heat storage technologies, in particular, in terms of storage time dynamics and energy density. In this work, a comprehensive review of the state of art of theore…
