A Novel Technique for Deembeding the Unloaded Resonance Frequency from Measurements of Microwave Cavities

[EN] A novel technique to extract the influence of coupling networks on the resonant frequency of cavities in one-port measurements is presented. The determination of the unloaded resonant frequency is performed directly from measurements without either the need to obtain the electromagnetic fields in the resonator or to deembed the delay of transmission lines from the measuring equipment to the resonator. The importance of the Foster's form on the modeling of the frequency detuning of the resonators is also discussed and a criterion for the choice of the appropriate Foster's form is suggested. The procedure is validated with simulations and experimental measurements of manufactured cavities

A case study in NW Italy investigating an underground electric line (1 m depth triple cable at operative voltages 220-380 kV) measured electric fields in the surrounding soil virtually close to zero but magnetic fields (microTs) 20 times the background level. After 6 months, the influence radius around the cable on microbial activity (estimated by soil ATP), organic carbon, and total nitrogen follows exactly the inverse trend of the MF, shifting the biological activity with a lag distance of 5 m from the 220 kV cable.

In this paper a performance analysis is carried out, in order to evaluate the possibility to employ power line communication (PLC) between secondary substations of a medium voltage (MV) distribution networks in a smart grid. The study is focused on the analysis of PLC technologies and the evaluation of the influence quantities on the communication performance in the most common case of by-pass connection at MV bus-bars of secondary substations. In this work the use of PLC in MV-LV networks is investigated, by means of experimental tests in the case of a two-ways MV/LV communication between two secondary substations. The two substations are connected by a MV overhead power line. Moreover each substation has a by-pass connection at MV bus-bars and a MV/LV power transformer. A ST7580 transceiver is used to inject the communication signal. The transceiver is embedded in a new interface device developed by the authors. The current transformer (CT) performance under distorted waveform conditions is usually characterized by means of the frequency-response test. In this paper, a new way to characterize CTs, closer to real operation conditions, is proposed. The harmonic phase-angle and ratio errors are measured using a nonsinusoidal current composed of fundamental and one harmonic with adjustable phase shift. The new method was tested by determining the performance of two metering class CTs commonly used by the Italian power company.
