Il saggio approfondisce le ricadute operative nell'architettura siciliana del Settecento del trattato dell'architetto gesuita Andrea Pozzo. In ambito isolano questo celebre testo, edito in due volumi, fu di certo studiato e osservato con attenzione dagli architetti locali, registrando una progressiva aderenza alle tavole del padre gesuita. Effect of superplasticizers on the rheological properties of fly ash suspensions containing activators of the pozzolanic reaction

Rheological studies have been carried out on the effect of a superplasticizer from the sulphonated melamine formaldehyde (SMF) group upon the properties of fly ash suspensions containing a small quantity of mineral admixtures such as cement, lime and gypsum. The superplasticizers' efficiency has appeared to depend greatly on the admixture used. The highest liquefaction degree was found in fly ash suspensions containing both cement and gypsum together and the next it was, when only cement was added. Characterization of hydraulic mortars by means of simultaneous thermal analysis

The properties of hydraulic mortars were studied by means of simultaneous thermal analysis (STA), according to a procedure proposed in the literature. Hydraulic limes, cement and/or slaked lime were mixed using different proportions of both inert and reactive aggregates, in order to test the effectiveness of such procedure in distinguishing the different degree of hydraulicity of such samples. The use of the normalized coordinates suggested in the literature results in overlapping of the clusters of different kinds of mortars. Modified coordinates are proposed, which give promising results in view of outlining a 'master curve' of hydraulicity.

Retention of alkali ions by hydrated low-pH cements: Mechanism and Na+/K+ selectivity

Low-pH cements, also referred to as low-alkalinity cements, can be designed by replacing significant amounts of Portland cement by pozzolanic materials. Their pore solution is characterized by a pH near 11, and an alkali concentration much lower than that of Portland cement. This work investigates the retention of sodium and potassium by a hydrated low-pH cement comprising 60% Portland cement and 40% silica fume. It is shown that sorption of potassium is higher than that of sodium and mainly results from counterion charge balancing of the C-S-H negative surface charge. Analysis of the chemical and microstructural modifications effects on the hydro-mechanical behaviour of a lime-treated clay

The paper presents the results of a characterization of kinetic characteristics of pozzolanic reaction with the aim to investigate the time-dependent modification of clay properties as a consequence of mixing with lime. Results of chemical analyses are in agreement with the increase of mechanical properties and with the observed microstructure modifications up to one year of curing time. The rate of development of pozzolanic reactions seems to be almost constant while the time required for their completion is dependent on the lime content. Coseismic Damage at an Archaeological Site in Sicily, Italy: Evidence of Roman Age Earthquake Surface Faulting

Archaeoseismology can provide a useful chronological tool for constraining earthquakes and documenting significant evidence that would otherwise be lost. In this paper, we report a case of surface faulting on ancient man-made structures belonging to the archaeological site of Santa Venera al Pozzo situated along the eastern flank of Mt. Etna volcano in eastern Sicily (southern Italy), which is affected by well-developed tectonic faults. Physical and mechanical properties of sustainable hydraulic mortar based on marble slurry with waste glass

This paper aims to propose and characterize a sustainable hydraulic mortar entirely obtained by the reuse of waste materials, with marble slurry coming from quarries in the north-western Sicily and glass powder coming from a waste collection plant in Marsala (Province of Trapani). The first was used as raw material to produce the mortar binder by a kilning and slaking process, while the second was used as a pozzolanic additive.
