Validating the early childhood classroom observation measure in first and third grade classrooms

2016

The present study reports on the psychometric properties of the Early Childhood Classroom Observation Measure (ECCOM) in Finnish and Estonian first and third grade classrooms. The observation data were collected from 91 first grade teachers and 70 third grade teachers. Teachers' curriculum goals, teaching experience and the classroom size were measured also. The results of confirmatory factor analysis provided evidence of the three-factor model (management, climate, and instruction) for each dimension—child-centred, teacher-directed, and child-dominated—in both grades. The reliability of the dimensions and sub-scales was good, and some evidence was also found for criterion validity. The fin…

Classroom management practices and their associations with children’s mathematics skills in two cultural groups

2014

The aim of the study was to examine the extent to which contextual factors predict children’s mathematics skills in different cognitive domains. The sample consisted of 1734 students from 26 Estonian- and 17 Russian-language schools in Estonia. Mathematics and non-verbal reasoning tests were carried out at the beginning of the third grade. In addition, teachers were asked about their classroom management practices. The results of multilevel modelling showed that applying supportive practices in the classroom contributes to higher achievement in mathematics. Teachers from Estonian- and Russian-language schools were also found to differ with regard to their management practices, and these pra…

Informal Institutions and Democracy

2000

Informal institutions have grown in relevance for the analysis of new ‘third wave’ democracies. The research strategy receives its impetus from the debate on neo‐institutionalism theory, which offers a productive perspective for structuring the field of analysis. This article explains the distinguishing factors between formal and informal institutions. It addresses five basic types of informal institutions, examines the ways in which they function and discusses their relevance in terms of democracy theory. Each type is characterized by the way in which it enacts its respective means of political influence. The study distinguishes between forms of specific relationship (clientelism), of mate…

Posicionamiento para el manejo de la hipertensión arterial en atención primaria a partir del análisis crítico de las guías americana (2017) y europea…

2019

The Scientific Societies of Primary Care, being the area in which there is a considerable prevalence of Arterial Hypertension (AHT), need to periodically evaluate the international guidelines for its management. This is particularly relevant when disparate guidelines make it difficult to make decisions in daily clinical practice. The present document has as its aim to analyse the changes and new developments proposed in the guidelines of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association (ACC/AHA 2017), as well as in the guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology and European Society of Hypertension (ESC/ESH 2018). An analysis will be made of any differences, limita…

Metabolic effects of sacubitril/valsartan: are they relevant in clinical practice?

2018

The burden of cardiometabolic diseases continues to rise worldwide (1). Obesity, insulin resistance, atherogenic dyslipidemia, hypertension and intra-abdominal adiposity are strongly interrelated and are crucial determinants of heart failure (HF) (2).

Development of an MCDA framework for evaluation and positioning of oncological treatments in clinical practice.

2019

95 Background: Ensuring that effective innovations are accessible in a timely and affordable manner to all cancer patients is a challenge that stakeholders face today. Several oncology frameworks (ASCO, ESMO, ICER, NCCN) have been developed to define and quantify the value of oncological therapies to support clinicians and patients at the time of selection and as a basis for decision-making. However, current frameworks only define treatment value in terms of clinical benefit, creating a need for one that allows holistic evaluation of treatments and supports decision-making in clinical practice. The ECO Foundation led this study to develop a reflective multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA…

T59. FILLING THE GAP BETWEEN RESEARCH AND CLINICAL PRACTICE: A NEW APP FOR PATIENTS WITH FIRST EPISODE OF PSYCHOSIS

2019

BACKGROUND: In spite of promising results of mobile Health (mHealth) interventions for patients with psychosis, integration of these appliances into clinical practice remains a significant challenge (Bonet et al. 2017). Moreover, some studies have pointed out that percentages between 19–38% of patients have had negative experiences related to internet or cell phone usage, which may increase the risk of psychotic relapses (Bonet et al. 2018). In order to address these issues, we have developed an app called “ReMindCare” whose main objective is being simple, useful and automatically integrated into clinical practice. METHODS: ReMindCare is an app that collects the following information: a) Th…

Clinical relevance of genetic heterogeneity in HCV

2010

Infection by HCV affects an estimated 170 million people worldwide and it represents one of the major causes of liver transplantation and a heavy burden to healthcare systems. As with many other RNA viruses, HCV is characterized by very high levels of genetic variation, which have been associated to differences in disease progression and efficiency of antiviral treatment. Studies show many contradictory results and little consensus on such associations. Nevertheless, some general guidelines translating research results to clinical practice have been postulated. Here, we review the main research results obtained on HCV variation so far and explore the reasons for their lack of congruence und…
