Cluster emergence: combining pre-existing conditions and triggering factors
2016
AbstractThis article argues that the emergence of regional clusters relies on both necessary pre-existing conditions for cluster appearance in general and triggering factors that cause clusters to emerge in particular places. This approach is used to analyse two ‘critical cases’; the emergence of the synthetic-knowledge boat building industry in the Arendal area in Norway from the mid-1950s and the analytical-knowledge cancer medicine industry in Oslo around the year 2000. Although the industries and the contexts are otherwise very different, the framework turns out to be useful in interpreting the emergence of the two clusters. However, the specific pre-existing conditions and the triggeri…
Cultural institutions as agents of urban and community regeneration in the (post-)pandemic city. The case of the «Laboratorio Zen Insieme» in Palermo
2022
Although all cities in the world have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, its impacts on the territories, yet to be understood, are unevenly distributed, revealing extremely varied imbalances depending on the places. However, it is clear that the virus and its variants have aggravated pre-existing socio-spatial inequalities, creating new ones and bringing attention back to those implications between space, planning, public health and citizenship that are at the origins of contemporary urbanism. In a reference framework in which the crisis is globalized but unequal and in the absence of a welfare system capable of responding to the urgencies of the most marginalized social contexts and g…
Palermo, ZEN District. An occasion of urban re-qualifying
2012
Among the changes made to the original scheme proposed by Amoroso Group, were some that showed the willingness to accommodate the constraints established by the local council and were designed primarily to protect certain pre-existing historical sites in the area. Consequently, the gridded, dense neighbourhood Zen 2 had to be opened in certain parts. Thereupon on the South-East quarter the "0D" insula, the citrus grove, the historical outskirts and the school in Trapani Pescia Street detect an emblematic fragment, useful to understand the contradictions that exist in this district, where heterogeneous elements form self and distinct parts. The design of new residences in this area is an occ…
Impact of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Infection on Human B Cell Compartment and Antibody Responses
2022
Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the most important health challenges worldwide. Control of the TB epidemic has not yet been achieved because of the lack of an effective vaccine and rapid and sensitive diagnostic approaches, as well as the emergence of drug-resistant forms of M. tuberculosis. Cellular immunity has a pivotal role against M. tuberculosis infection, but the role of humoral immunity is still controversial. We analyzed the frequency, absolute counts, and phenotypic and functional subsets of B lymphocytes in the peripheral blood of patients with active TB and subjects with latent infection compared to healthy donors. Moreover, we analyzed serum levels of total Ig and their IgA, I…
Strutture preesistenti come appoggio per le absidi a Cagliari nel XIV secolo
2015
The paper addresses the issue of the reuse of existing structures as a starting point for the construction of churches, paying particular attention to religious architecture built in Cagliari starting from the 1320s. The study focused in particular on some churches whose apses were built exploiting the presence of earlier defensive structures either abandoned or damaged during the Aragonese siege of Cagliari Castle (1324-26). As suggested by evidence found in the built-up architecture, in the architectural production after the Aragonese conquest of the city it is possible to find traces of a building strategy that involved the reuse of abandoned towers for the construction of apses, convert…
Performing sound of the past: Remix in electronic dance music culture
2014
The term remix, defined as an activity of taking data from pre-existing materials to combine them into new forms according to personal taste, relates to various elements and areas of contemporary culture. Whichever model used, consideration of the remix depends on recognition of pre-existing cultural codes. Therefore, as a second layer, the remix relies on the authority of the original and it functions at the meta-level. The audience may see a trace of history with the pre-existing object and the meaning creates in the viewer(s), reader(s), listener(s) or, in the contemporary world of DJs and popular electronic dance music culture - in dancer(s). With the aim of specifying modes of creating…
