Oral Sustained-Release Aminophylline and Bronchodilator Response to Inhaled Fenoterol in Patients with Chronic Airflow Obstruction

The bronchodilator response to inhaled fenoterol (400 micrograms) was examined in the morning and in the afternoon before and during oral sustained-release aminophylline treatment in eight patients with chronic reversible airway obstruction. Bronchodilatation was evaluated by measuring serial peak expiratory flow rates (PEFR) for eight hours after inhaled fenoterol and calculating the area under the time-response curves and the percentage increment from the baseline values. The patients showed an enhancement of the bronchodilatation achieved with fenoterol in the morning during aminophylline treatment. Kinetic experiments on the synergistic effect of NADH on microsomal drug oxidation.

Abstract1. The synergistic effect of NADH on the NADPH-dependent mixed function oxidation of p-nitroanisole and hexobarbital can be measured both photometrically and by following the substrate-induced oxygen consumption. The increase in reaction rate is about 50% and lasts as long as NADH is present in the microsomal suspension.2. The oxidation of added NADH is increased by hexobarbital, ethylmorphine and SKF 525-A. Lineweaver-Burk transformation of the NADH oxidation rates yields straight lines for xenobiotic substrates suggesting Michaelis constants similar to those obtained from metabolic experiments. Metabolic epoxidation of trans-4-acetylaminostilbene: A protective mechanism against its activation to a mutagen

Abstract Trans -4-acetylaminostilbene is activated by liver preparations to mutagens for Salmonella typhimurium . Since this compound is metabolized to the trans -α,β-epoxide and since many epoxides are ultimate mutagens, this epoxide was tested for direct mutagenicity. It was, however, found to be non-mutagenic, and, in contrast to the parent compound, the epoxide was no longer activated by liver preparations to mutagens. Development and validation of a radioimmunoassay for serum melatonin.

A radioimmunoassay using N-[3-(4-hydroxy-3-[4-hydroxy-3- [125I]iodophenylpropionyl)]-5-methoxytryptamine as tracer for determination of melatonin in the serum of different species is described. Melatonin antisera were raised in rabbits by immunization with a bovine serum albumin conjugate of N-[3-(2-aminoethyl)-5-methoxy indole] hemisuccinamide. A single high affinity, specific antiserum was obtained. In contrast to previous studies, the tracer was synthesised in one step in the absence of water, giving an excellent yield of highly pure product. No chromatographic purification step was needed. Investigation of cuticular hydrocarbons from Bagrada hilaris genders by SPME/GC-MS

The cuticular hydrocarbons of male and female Bagrada hilaris Burmeister (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) were investigated, by headspace solid-phase microextraction followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Measurements were done with fiber coatings of different polarity after optimization of headspace volumes and extraction temperatures. This resulted in the use of polyacrylate fiber, 22-ml vial as the sample holder, and an extraction temperature of 150 degrees C. The term 'inconspicuous penis' refers to a group of anatomical abnormalities in which the penis looks smaller than is expected. Micropenis can be defined as 'true micropenis' - which results from a defect in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis - and 'micropenis secondary to congenital anatomical anomalies of the surrounding and overlying structures' - also known as 'concealed penis'. The different forms of concealed penis include webbed penis, congenital megaprepuce and partially hidden penis caused by prepubic adiposity. Determination of microcystins in fish by solvent extraction and liquid chromatography

A liquid chromatography electrospray mass spectrometry (LC/ESI/MS) method has been developed to identify and quantify microcystins in fish liver and intestine. Microcystins (MCs) were extracted from 500 mg sample with methanol-water (85:25, v/v) and the extracts concentrated to 250 microl. The parameters were optimized by a full factorial 2(3) design. Neither laborious pre-treatment nor clean up were necessary. MCs were separated using conventional C18 column and an acetonitrile-acidified water (pH 3) gradient. Noninvasive blood pressure monitoring evaluation of verapamil slow-release 240-mg antihypertensive effectiveness

The aim of our study was to evaluate the antihypertensive effectiveness of verapamil slow-release (SR), administered once a day. We studied 11 patients, 7 male and 4 female, with an average age of 53.6 +/- 12.86 years, who had essential hypertension. After a drug washout period of at least 15 days, placebo was administered (one tablet per day), and then patients received verapamil SR 240 mg/day at 8:00 a.m. for at least 2 weeks. At the end of the washout, placebo, and active drug treatment periods we performed ambulatory intermittent blood pressure monitoring for 24 h using a Squibb Spacelabs pressurometer.
