Automated multi-dimensional liquid chromatography

2004

A comprehensive on-line sample clean-up with an integrated two-dimensional HPLC system was developed for the analysis of natural peptides. Samples comprised of endogenous peptides with molecular weights up to 20 kDa were generated from human hemofiltrate (HF) obtained from patients with chronic renal failure. The (poly-)peptides were separated using novel silica-based restricted access materials with strong cation-exchange functionalities (SCX-RAM). The size-selective sample fractionation step is followed by cation-exchange chromatography as the first dimension. The subsequent second dimension of separation is based on hydrophobic interaction using four parallel short reversed-phase (RP) co…

Traditional Chinese herbal medicine at the forefront battle against COVID-19: Clinical experience and scientific basis.

2020

Abstract Background Throughout the 5000-year history of China, more than 300 epidemics were recorded. Traditional Chinese herbal medicine (TCM) has been used effectively to combat each of these epidemics’ infections, and saved many lives. To date, there are hundreds of herbal TCM formulae developed for the purpose of prevention and treatment during epidemic infections. When COVID-19 ravaged the Wuhan district in China in early January 2020, without a deep understanding about the nature of COVID-19, patients admitted to the TCM Hospital in Wuhan were immediately treated with TCM and reported later with >90% efficacy. Approach We conducted conduct a systematic survey of various TCM herbal pre…

Impact on flavour release of the structure of composite gels containing polysaccharides: Example of the fruit préparations

2006

The main objective of this study was to understand the respective rôle of the structure of a food product and of the physicochemical interactions on flavour release. For that purpose, fruit préparations hâve been chosen as model matrices. Those matrices contain a polysaccharide as gelling agent, a cross-linked waxy corn starch (1.4%), a high sucrose content (35%), an acidic buffer and a strawberry aroma (17 molécules). Four matrices were developed by modifying either the composition or the concentration in gelling agent: two matrices of similar texture containing either LM pectin or carrageenan, and two carrageenan based matrices with différent gelled structures. In a first step; two comple…

On-fibre solid-phase microextraction coupled to conventional liquid chromatography versus in-tube solid-phase microextraction coupled to capillary li…

2006

This paper compares the advantages and disadvantages of two different configurations for the extraction of triazines from water samples: (1) on-fibre solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled to conventional liquid chromatography (LC); and (2) in-tube SPME coupled to capillary LC. In-tube SPME has been effected either with a packed column or with an open capillary column. A critical evaluation of the main parameters affecting the performance of each method has been carried out in order to select the most suitable approach according to the requirements of the analysis. In the on-fibre SPME configuration the fibre coating was polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-divinylbenzene (DVB). The limits of de…

On Approximate Jumbled Pattern Matching in Strings

2011

Given a string s, the Parikh vector of s, denoted p(s), counts the multiplicity of each character in s. Searching for a match of a Parikh vector q in the text s requires finding a substring t of s with p(t) = q. This can be viewed as the task of finding a jumbled (permuted) version of a query pattern, hence the term Jumbled Pattern Matching. We present several algorithms for the approximate version of the problem: Given a string s and two Parikh vectors u, v (the query bounds), find all maximal occurrences in s of some Parikh vector q such that u <= q <= v. This definition encompasses several natural versions of approximate Parikh vector search. We present an algorithm solving this problem …

Large Number Asymptotics for Two-Component Systems with Self-Consistent Coupling

2014

We shall consider the large number asymptotics of particle models for partial differential equations describing two component mixtures with simplest kind of self-consistent couplings. We shall recall in particular two examples related to different classes of models, the first one having both particle-like components and the second one having only one particle-like component (the other being described as a fluid); for these examples, different techniques on the probabilistic and analytic point of view are to be used to rigorously prove the convergence to a limit of the self-consistent terms in a “mean-field”-like asymptotics. The two models were analysed resp. in Bernardin and Ricci (Kinet R…

SPME of 52 pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls: Extraction efficiencies of the SPME coatings poly(dimethylsiloxane), polyacrylate, poly(dimethyl…

2001

Fiber/water partition coefficients (Kfw) of 52 pesticides, including triazines, organophosphorus pesticides, organochlorine pesticides, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were experimentally calculated for the five polymeric coatings poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), polyacrylate (PA), poly(dimethylsiloxane)-Divinylbenzene (PDMS-DVB), Carboxen-poly(dimethylsiloxane) (CAR-PDMS), and Carbowax-divinylbenzene (CW-DVB) commercially available for solid-phase microextraction coupled to gas chromatography. The equilibrium-time profiles for the five coatings were previously studied in order to establish the time needed for equilibrium. To calculate Kfw the amount of analyte extracted at equilibrium w…

Public Transport Passenger Count Forecasting in Pandemic Scenarios Using Regression Tsetlin Machine. Case Study of Agder, Norway

2021

Challenged by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, public transport is suffering from low ridership and staggering economic losses. One of the factors which triggered such losses was the lack of preparedness among governments and public transport providers. The losses can be minimized if the passenger count can be predicted with a higher accuracy and the public transport provision adapted to the demand in real time. The present paper explores the use of a novel machine learning algorithm, namely Regression Tsetlin Machine, in using historical passenger transport data from the current COVID-19 pandemic and pre-pandemic period, combined with a calendar of pandemic-related events (e.g. daily …

Effects of inhaled corticosteroids, leukotriene receptor antagonists, or both, plus long-acting beta2-agonists on asthma pathophysiology: a review of…

2004

Chronic inflammation and smooth muscle dysfunction are consistent features of asthma, and are responsible for disease progression and airway remodelling. The development of chronic airway inflammation depends upon the recruitment and activation of inflammatory cells and the subsequent release of inflammatory mediators, including cytokines. Cellular and histological evaluation of drugs with anti-inflammatory activity, such as inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs), is achieved by analysing samples of lung tissue or biological fluids, obtained by techniques such as bronchial biopsy, bronchoalveolar lavage and sputum induction. These provide valuable information on the inflammatory processes occurring…
