Abstract Glass is an important material for chemical processing and analysis because of its relatively low cost, mechanical strength, chemical inertness, optical transparency, and electrical insulation and temperature resistance far beyond that of most polymeric materials. We have investigated techniques for direct writing with MeV ions on soda-lime glass as well as capping procedures to form closed buried channels suitable for high-pressure driven flow. The influence of pulsed redox conditions on soil phosphorus

Abstract. The effects of eleven pulsed reduction-oxidation cycles (20 and 2 days, respectively) on soil phosphorus (P) dynamics are compared for 12 soils having contrasting properties and overfertilised with respect to P. Incubation conditions simulated transient waterlogging of the soil profile and involved repeated sampling and analysis of both the solution and solid phase P forms. An initial increase in P concentration occurred upto and including the fourth full cycle was followed by a sharp decline in concentration for all but one soil. Nitration of cathepsin D enhances its proteolytic activity during mammary gland remodelling after lactation

Proteomic studies in the mammary gland of control lactating and weaned rats have shown that there is an increased pattern of nitrated proteins during weaning when compared with controls. Here we report the novel finding that cathepsin D is nitrated during weaning. The expression and protein levels of this enzyme are increased after 8 h of litter removal and this up-regulation declines 5 days after weaning. However, there is a marked delay in cathepsin D activity since it does not increase until 2 days post-weaning and remains high thereafter. Spontaneous Magnetization in Ni−Al and Ni−Fe Layered Double Hydroxides

Layered double hydroxides containing paramagnetic Ni (II) and diamagnetic/paramagnetic Al (III)/Fe (III) ions have been prepared and characterized. Ni 2Al(OH) 6(NO 3). nH 2O ( 1), Ni 2Fe(OH) 6(NO 3). nH 2O ( 2), Ni 2Fe(OH) 6(C 6H 8O 4) 0.5. nH 2O ( 3), and Ni 2Fe(OH) 6(C 10H 16O 4) 0.5. nH 2O ( 4) were prepared by coprecipitation at controlled pH as polycrystalline materials with the typical brucite-like structure, with alternating layers of hydroxide and the corresponding anions, which determine the interlayer separation. ChIP-Seq from Limited Starting Material of K562 Cells and Drosophila Neuroblasts Using Tagmentation Assisted Fragmentation Approach

Chromatin immunoprecipitation is extensively used to investigate the epigenetic profile and transcription factor binding sites in the genome. However, when the starting material is limited, the conventional ChIP-Seq approach cannot be implemented. This protocol describes a method that can be used to generate the chromatin profiles from as low as 100 human or 1,000 Drosophila cells. The method employs tagmentation to fragment the chromatin with concomitant addition of sequencing adaptors. The method generates datasets with high signal to noise ratio and can be subjected to standard tools for ChIP-Seq analysis.

Purification of recovered phosphoric acid by extracting aluminium with di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid

AbstractThe extraction of aluminium from dilute phosphoric acid with di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (DEHPA) was optimized using response surface methodology. The optimization was based on the experimental three-level central composite face-centred design (CCF) and was conducted on real-life samples. The three variables included were pH, extractant concentration and aqueous to organic phase ratio (AO). Under the optimized conditions (pH 2.5, 0.6 M DEHPA and AO ratio 1:2), extraction efficiency of 99% for aluminium in four extraction stages is achieved. Abstract It remains a challenging task to reconstruct water temperatures from Sr/Ca ratios of bivalve shells. Although in many aragonitic species, Sr/Ca is negatively correlated to temperature – which is expected based on abiogenic precipitation experiments, the incorporation of Sr into the shell of bivalves is strongly controlled by physiological processes and occurs away from the predicted thermodynamic equilibrium. Strontium-to-calcium ratios of aragonitic shells remain far below that of the ambient water. A novel and simple method for the purification of extracellular levansucrase from Zymomonas mobilis.

A new and simple method for the purification of extracellular levansucrase from Zymomonas mobilis from highly viscous fermentation broth was developed. After incubation of the fermentation broth with a fructose-polymer cleaving enzyme preparation (Fructozyme, Novozymes, DK) for 48 h, levansucrase precipitated as aggregates and was redissolved in a 3 M urea solution. By ongoing size-exclusion chromatography on Sephacryl S-300 the final levansucrase preparation was purified 100-fold and exhibited a specific activity of 25-35 U/mg(protein). Supercritical fluid crystallization of adipic acid using urea as habit modifier

The crystal morphology of adipic acid mediated by the action of urea as additive has been investigated using the supercritical antisolvent precipitation (SAS). The process was performed using acetone and carbon dioxide as solvent and antisolvent, respectively. The effect of urea concentration in the liquid solution and of precipitation pressure on the crystal habit was investigated; the products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and infrared spectrometry (FT-IR).
