MicroRNAs: Promising New Antiangiogenic Targets in Cancer

2014

[EN] MicroRNAs are one class of small, endogenous, non-coding RNAs that are approximately 22 nucleotides in length; they are very numerous, have been phylogenetically conserved, and involved in biological processes such as development, differentiation, cell proliferation, and apoptosis. MicroRNAs contribute to modulating the expression levels of specific proteins based on sequence complementarity with their target mRNA molecules and so they play a key role in both health and disease. Angiogenesis is the process of new blood vessel formation from preexisting ones, which is particularly relevant to cancer and its progression. Over the last few years, microRNAs have emerged as critical regulat…

Determination of metal inventory and current efficiency in commercial aluminum reduction cells

1971

A method for the determination of the metal inventory in commercial aluminum reduction cells, based on radioisotope dilution, has been developed, employing a198Au tracer. By taking a large number of samples from the cells, the current efficiency is evaluated from the slope of the cumulative metal inventory vs time data. The method allows a determination of the current efficiency over a period of 2 to 3 days with a relative precision of approximately 1 pct. The paper gives a thorough discussion of the sources of error inherent in the procedure suggested.

Epigenetics and precision medicine in lung cancer

2022

Abstract Lung cancer is one of the most common types of cancer and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. A major factor related with the high mortality rate of lung cancer patients is the late diagnosis of the disease. So, the identification and characterization of new epigenetic marks and mechanisms may contribute to better diagnose and treat lung cancer. In this chapter we review the epigenetic mechanisms involved in lung cancer, including DNA methylation, histone posttranslational modification and noncoding RNAs. The chapter focuses on biomarkers for diagnostic, prognostic and response to treatment. Finally, thanks to the reversible nature of epigenetic marks, we provide …

Machine Learning Techniques for Intrusion Detection: A Comparative Analysis

2016

International audience; With the growth of internet world has transformed into a global market with all monetary and business exercises being carried online. Being the most imperative resource of the developing scene, it is the vulnerable object and hence needs to be secured from the users with dangerous personality set. Since the Internet does not have focal surveillance component, assailants once in a while, utilizing varied and advancing hacking topologies discover a path to bypass framework " s security and one such collection of assaults is Intrusion. An intrusion is a movement of breaking into the framework by compromising the security arrangements of the framework set up. The techniq…

Recent advances of HCI in decision-making tasks for optimized clinical workflows and precision medicine.

2020

The ever-increasing amount of biomedical data is enabling new large-scale studies, even though ad hoc computational solutions are required. The most recent Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques have been achieving outstanding performance and an important impact in clinical research, aiming at precision medicine, as well as improving healthcare workflows. However, the inherent heterogeneity and uncertainty in the healthcare information sources pose new compelling challenges for clinicians in their decision-making tasks. Only the proper combination of AI and human intelligence capabilities, by explicitly taking into account effective and safe interaction paradigms,…

Temporal Binding in Multisensory and Motor-Sensory Contexts: Toward a Unified Model

2021

Our senses receive a manifold of sensory signals at any given moment in our daily lives. For a coherent and unified representation of information and precise motor control, our brain needs to temporally bind the signals emanating from a common causal event and segregate others. Traditionally, different mechanisms were proposed for the temporal binding phenomenon in multisensory and motor-sensory contexts. This paper reviews the literature on the temporal binding phenomenon in both multisensory and motor-sensory contexts and suggests future research directions for advancing the field. Moreover, by critically evaluating the recent literature, this paper suggests that common computational prin…

A novel Bayesian framework for relevance feedback in image content-based retrieval systems

2006

This paper presents a new algorithm for image retrieval in content-based image retrieval systems. The objective of these systems is to get the images which are as similar as possible to a user query from those contained in the global image database without using textual annotations attached to the images. The main problem in obtaining a robust and effective retrieval is the gap between the low level descriptors that can be automatically extracted from the images and the user intention. The algorithm proposed here to address this problem is based on the modeling of user preferences as a probability distribution on the image space. Following a Bayesian methodology, this distribution is the pr…

Effects of comprehensive geriatric assessment and targeted intervention on mobility in persons aged 75 years and over: a randomized controlled trial

2011

Objective: To assess the effect of a comprehensive geriatric assessment and individually tailored intervention on mobility in older people. In addition, the effectiveness of the geriatric intervention was evaluated among a subgroup of persons with musculoskeletal pain. Design: Three-year geriatric development project with randomized assignment to intervention and control group. Setting: Research centre, community and assisted living facilities. Participants: Seven hundred and eighty-one Finnish persons aged 75–98 years were assigned to an intervention ( n = 404) or control ( n = 377) group. Intervention: A comprehensive geriatric assessment with a multifactorial intervention lasting two ye…

ESMO Consensus Guidelines for management of patients with colon and rectal cancer. A personalized approach to clinical decision making

2012

Contains fulltext : 111010pub.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the most common tumour type in both sexes combined in Western countries. Although screening programmes including the implementation of faecal occult blood test and colonoscopy might be able to reduce mortality by removing precursor lesions and by making diagnosis at an earlier stage, the burden of disease and mortality is still high. Improvement of diagnostic and treatment options increased staging accuracy, functional outcome for early stages as well as survival. Although high quality surgery is still the mainstay of curative treatment, the management of CRC must be a multi-modal approach pe…
