Storage Diseases: Diagnostic Position
2013
Storage diseases are metabolic multiorgan conditions, which may be divided into lysosomal and nonlysosomal diseases. Disorders of the lysosomal type require electron microscopy for morphological diagnosis. It is the metabolic substrate that determines involvement of the cell type or organ in the individual storage disease, allowing extracerebral biopsies, for instance, in the neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinoses (NCL). A hierarchy of tissues biopsied for diagnosis can be based on easy accessibility: blood lymphocytes, skin, conjunctiva, rectum, skeletal muscle. Lysosomal diseases are divided into vacuolar and nonvacuolar ones. NCL display variegated ultrastructural patterns. Drugs may induce lyso…
Elevated cerebrospinal fluid and plasma homocysteine levels in ALS
2009
BACKGROUND: High cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma levels of homocysteine (HC) have been reported in certain neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's diseases and, recently, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). OBJECTIVES: To assay the CSF and plasma levels of HC in ALS patients and controls, and to evaluate the relationship between HC levels and clinical variables of the disease. METHODS: Cerebrospinal fluid from sixty-nine (M/F 1.87) and plasma from sixty-five ALS patients (M/F 1.83) were taken and stored at -80 degrees C until use. Controls (CSF = 55; plasma = 67) were patients admitted to our hospital for neurological disorders with no known relationship to HC ch…
In silico prediction of central nervous system activity of compounds. Identification of potential pharmacophores by the TOPS–MODE approach
2004
The central nervous system (CNS) activity has been investigated by using a topological substructural molecular approach (TOPS-MODE). A discriminant analysis to classify CNS and non-CNS drugs was developed on a data set (302 compounds) of great structural variability where more than 81% (247/302) were well classified. Randic's orthogonalization procedures was carried out to allow the interpretation of the model and to avoid the collinearity among descriptors. The discriminant model was assessed by a leave-n-out (when n varies from 2 to 20) cross-validation procedure (79.94% of correct classification), an external prediction set composed by 78 CNS/non-CNS drugs (80.77% of correct classificati…
Predictive value of morphologic parameters for successful correction of Class II Division 2 malocclusion
2003
Abstract The aim of this study was to assess the predictive value of pretreatment cephalometric parameters and apical base size for successful correction of Angle Class II Division 2 malocclusion. Pretreatment lateral cephalograms and pretreatment and posttreatment study casts of 96 subjects with Class II Division 2 malocclusions were examined to obtain 23 cephalometric parameters and to measure the size of the apical bases. Success of occlusal correction was evaluated as the percentage of change of peer assessment rating scores during treatment; percentage of change was the dependent variable in multivariate statistical analyses used to test the predictive value of the assessed parameters.…
343 External validation of tumour-free distance as novel prognostic marker in early-stage cervical cancer undergoing primary surgery
2020
Introduction Tumor-free distance (TFD), defined as the minimum distance of uninvolved stroma between the tumor and peri-cervical stromal ring, was recently proposed as predictive marker of recurrence in patients with early-stage cervical cancer treated by primary surgery (particularly if ≤3.5 mm). The aims of the present study were to assess the prognostic value of TFD and to compare TFD with other known prognostic markers in early-stage cervical cancer. Methods Patients with pathologic FIGO 2009 stage IA1-IIB cervical cancer, treated by primary radical surgical treatment between 01/2000 and 12/2018, were retrospectively included. Adjuvant treatment was administered according to the presenc…

Psychological intimate partner violence: the major predictor of posttraumatic stress disorder in abused women.
2004
Intimate partner violence (IPV) significantly impacts women mental and physical wellbeing and therefore represents a worldwide public health problem. A clear association between IPV and increased risk to develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been documented. However, few studies examined how different features of IPV (physical, psychological, sexual) interact with other traumatic stress experiences (physical, psychological and sexual childhood abuse and adulthood victimization by other/s than the partner) in determining PTSD. Women abused by the partner (n=75) were compared with non-abused control women (n=52). Information about sociodemographic profile and relevant personal char…
Child abuse/neglect risk assessment under field practice conditions: Tests of external and temporal validity and comparison with heart disease predic…
2015
AbstractObjectives (1) Identify validation design and accuracy assessment standards for medical prognostic models applicable to evaluation of child abuse/neglect (CA/N) risk assessment models. (2) Assess the accuracy of the California Family Risk Assessment (CFRA) in predicting CA/N using the foregoing standards. (3) Compare the prediction accuracy of the CFRA with the prediction accuracy of coronary heart disease (CHD) prediction models. Questions addressed (1) What validation design and accuracy assessment standards are used to evaluate medical prognostic models? (2) What is the evidence for the accuracy of the CFRA using those standards? (3) How does the accuracy of the CFRA in predictin…
Coronavirus Diseases (COVID-19) Current Status and Future Perspectives: A Narrative Review
2020
At the end of 2019 a novel virus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), causing severe acute respiratory syndrome expanded globally from Wuhan, China. In March 2020 the World Health Organization declared the SARS-Cov-2 virus a global pandemic. We performed a narrative review to describe existing literature with regard to Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, management and future perspective. MEDLINE, EMBASE and Scopus databases were searched for relevant articles. Although only when the pandemic ends it will be possible to assess the full health, social and economic impact of this global disaster, this review represents a pic…
