Interleukin-6 Is a Promising Marker of COVID-19 in Children: A Case Series of 2 Brothers with Severe COVID-19 Pneumonia.

2022

BACKGROUND To date, Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) remains a global health concern, with fatalities mostly in older age groups with underlying medical conditions, while children are less likely to manifest severe symptoms. CASE REPORT We describe the clinical cases of 2 brothers admitted to our Children's Hospital for persistent fever and cough during the COVID-19 pandemic. Case 1. A 1.5-year-old boy had fever, expiratory dyspnea, desaturation, oxygen saturation 94-96% with O2, and bilateral hissing and crackling rales. His interleukin-6 level in the acute phase of the disease was 100.41 and at the resolution it was 46.2 pg/ml. Treatment with amoxicillin plus clavulanic acid, methylpre…

Ten-month follow-up of patients with covid-19 temporally related multi-system inflammatory syndrome in children: the experience of the children hospi…

2023

Abstract Background In Sicily, the first wave of COVID-19 showed a low epidemic impact in paediatric population, while the second and the third waves had a higher impact on clinical presentation of COVID-19 in children and a significantly higher severe outcome in patients with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), with a frequent life-threatening progression. Methods We describe a cohort of 22 Sicilian children (11 M; 11 F; age: 1.4–14 years), presenting with clinical features compatible with MIS-C. Patients with negative swab had a history of recent personal or parental infection. Results The following diagnostic criteria were detected: fever (100%); cheilitis and/or phary…

MO945SERUM AND URINE LEUCINE RICH ALPHA-2-GLYCOPROTEIN-1 IS ASSOCIATED WITH KIDNEY TRANSPLANT INJURY AND FAILURE

2021

Abstract Background and Aims Kidney transplantation is the treatment of choice for most of the patients with end stage chronic kidney disease. To improve patient and graft survival, early diagnostics and discovery of specific biomarkers is important. Leucine rich alpha-2-glycoprotein-1 (LRG-1) is an innovative, non-invasive biomarker that is elevated in case of angiogenesis, inflammation and kidney injury. Aim was to evaluate biomarker LRG-1 level in serum and urine in kidney transplant recipients in accordance with kidney injury markers and time period after kidney transplantation. Method In the study 35 patients were enrolled. Patients had functioning kidney grafts and they were more than…

RANDOMIZED TRIAL OF CYCLOSPORINE MICROEMULSION (NEORAL) VERSUS CONVENTIONAL CYCLOSPORINE IN LIVER TRANSPLANTATION

1998

Background. The new microemulsion formulation of cyclosporine (Neoral) has been developed in an effort to improve the reliability of drug absorption. The objectives of this study were to assess the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of Neoral compared to the original formulation (Sandimmun) in liver transplant recipients. Methods. In a double-blind, parallel group study conducted in 28 centers across Europe and the United States, patients receiving primary orthotopic liver allografts were randomized within 24 hr of transplantation, 198 to Neoral and 192 to Sandimmun. Patients with and without T-tube biliary drainage were included. Postoperatively, all patients also received intravenous (i.v…

Variations of interleukin-6 after surgical removal of lower third molars

2006

Our objectives were to determine if there is a release of IL-6 after surgical removal of lower third molars and to compare the amount of IL-6 in patients treated with NSAID and in those treated with glucocorticoids. We did a prospective study on 73 patients who attended the Oral Surgery Unit (Department of Medicine and Oral Surgery) in the Faculty of Odontology of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid for the surgical removal of their lower third molars. These patients were separated into two groups: the diclofenac group and the methylprednisolone group. A record card was completed with preoperative and postoperative epidemiological and clinic data. Samples of gingival crevicular fluid were…

2001

A 71-year-old man with cryoglobulinemia associated with severe symmetrical sensorimotor polyneuropathy was successfully treated with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and a corticosteroid. Within 2-3 months, he developed distal motor and sensory deficits and burning feet deteriorating after cold exposure. On examination, symmetric hypesthesia and hypalgesia were found along with bilateral loss of vibration and position sense, loss of ankle jerks, and paralysis of the pretibial muscles with step-page gait. The laboratory exam revealed elevated cryoglobulin levels and reduced complement C4. Nerve conduction studies were consistent with a severe axonal sensorimotor polyneuropathy. Sural nerve …

Use of corticosteroids in Coronavirus disease 2019 pneumonia: A systematic review of the literature

2020

The aim was to investigate the effectiveness of glucocorticoid therapy in patients with COVID-19. A systematic search of the literature across nine databases was conducted from inception until 15th March 2020, following the PRISMA guidelines. Patients with a validated diagnosis of COVID-19 and using corticosteroids were included, considering all health outcomes. Four studies with 542 Chinese participants were included. Two studies reported negative findings regarding the use of corticosteroids in patients with COVID-19, i.e., corticosteroids had a detrimental impact on clinical outcomes. One study reported no significant association between the use of corticosteroids and clinical outcomes. …

Cetuximab-induced skin exanthema: prophylactic and reactive skin therapy are equally effective

2013

Purpose Treatment with cetuximab is accompanied by the development of an acneiform follicular skin exanthema in more than 80 % of patients. Severe exanthema (grade III/IV) develops in about 9–19 % of patients with the necessity of cetuximab dose reduction or cessation.
