New data on Sicilian prehistoric and historic evolution in a mountain context, Vallone Inferno (Scillato, Italy)

Vallone Inferno rock-shelter is an archaeological site located in the Madonie mountain range in Sicily. Archaeological excavation and research have provided a long prehistoric and historic sequence from the Neolithic to the medieval period, this being the most complete work in this area at present. In this paper we present the preliminary data provided by a multidisciplinary study based on pottery, lithic, human, faunal and plant remains. Stratigraphic studies have identified four complexes, of which complex 3 has provided almost all the archaeological remains. 14C AMS dates, obtained from four samples, place the human activities between 2601 cal BC and 644 cal AD. The aim of the Madonie research project is to analyse mobility strategies and the use of a mountainous territory by relating geomorphologic features, raw material sources and landscape to the prehistoric settlement. For this purpose we planned an intensive and systematic survey of sample areas, selected on geo-morphological, altimetric and archaeological criteria, correlated to a palaeoenvironmental investigation based on the study of palynological sequence samples coming from wet areas of the Madonie territory and from archaeological deposits. Where are the famous Bell Beaker individual burials in the south east of France ? What is the nature of the burials wherein we actually find Bell Beaker elements ? And what kind of Bell Beaker is it ? And also : where does the Bell Beakers stand in the evolution of the funeral architectures and rites between the end of the Middle Neolithic and the Early Bronze Age ? Answering these questions, thanks to the presence of more than a hundred funeral sites in the area, would change our vision of the Bell Beakers fenomenon itself. These questions are also the occasion to present the diversity and the traditions of the funeral practices by the third millenium BC.

Scientific analysis were undertaken within a research project concerning ivory objects from the Chalcolithic to Early Bronze Age of the Iberian Peninsula. In several of the analyses of objects from Portuguese Estremadura, especially V-perforated buttons, we could detect for the first time the presence of sperm whale ivory. This highlights the advantage and necessity of scientific analysis of ivory. It also clearly demonstrates that not all ivory used was ivory from African or Asian elephants, but we also did find ivory from the extinct Elephas antiquus, the hippopotamus and in this case sperm-whale. L’opération archéologique menée à Hermé, carrière Synéos (SPM) - tranche 6 des diagnostics archéologiques a permis de mettre au jour des occupations diachroniques néolithique et protohistorique.Ce diagnostic s’est déroulé sur deux parcelles distinctes pour une surface globale de 102 922 m2, une première au lieudit le Château Duduit et la seconde au lieudit La Patûre aux Bœufs.Sur l’emprise du Château Duduit nous avons mis au jour un petit amas de vingt-cinq pièces lithiques daté du Néolithique. Le diagnostic de 2022 a permis de mettre au jour une seule chaîne opératoire (débitage d’éclats par percussion dure) réalisée à partir de matériaux locaux pour la fabrication d’outils tels que les ra…
