In the heart of the island of Ushant, the protohistoric site of Mez-Notariou reveals remains of Early and Middle Bronze Age and Early Iron Age settlements. Traces of religious activity have also been discovered extending from the Middle Bronze Age to the end of Roman Antiquity. They are exemplified in particular by organized deposits of bones of mammals, fish and limpets. For 2000 years the right shoulders of mammals were chosen (60 to 80 %). Deposits of metallic objects are also connected with these practices which only ceased at the beginning of the High Middle Ages after the destruction of the site. Abstract In recent years, a few papers have addressed the palaeogenetic analysis of cultural, historical and archaeological artefacts. We provide an overview of the individual published articles and then describe the results we had in the framework of a palaeogenetic research project involving various historical and prehistoric finds from museums, archaeological excavations, and libraries. We show that ancient DNA can be isolated from most of the various biomaterials (leather, parchment, glue, binding media, crusted organic plant remains in containers). L’importance de l’artisanat autunois et son développement jusqu’au iiie siècle prennent racine à Bibracte qui a su exploiter les ressources naturelles de son environnement et parfaire un savoir-faire local ayant survécu à la conquête. Les recherches sur ces activités manufacturières menées conjointement à Bibracte et à Autun nous offrent ainsi une opportunité d’étudier ces problématiques sur la durée. À Bibracte, puis à Autun, les artisans du métal sont omniprésents, mais d’autres métiers, aux témoins plus discrets, ont pu aussi êtres identifiés.
