Impacts interculturels au Néolithique moyen. Du terroir au territoire : sociétés et espaces.

2006

– début du I er siècle ap. J.-C.)

2014

Iron Age war leaves little material trace. But we can however understand the role of war in Celtic society using the discoveries of weapons. By the study of the position of weapons in tombs and in sanctuaries, we propose to retrace the evolution of how the art of war is represented. This first inventory aims to replace within a historical perspective the variations of the number of warriors by chronological phase and by context, the rhythm of technical innovation, the evolution in the composition of the military equipment and the recruitment of the men at arms as well as the phenomena linked to the change in battle techniques and the intensity of the conflicts. We propose a sociological rea…

After African trades: changing in Cignana landscape between Late Antiquity and Medieval age

2017

International audience; In many parts of Sicily, the Late Antiquity represents a period of strong transformation in settlement patterns and landscapes. These changes occur also on an area 20 km SE from Agrigento, on the southern coast of the island: this is the territory around the imperial villa of Cignana (2nd-3th century AD), where the University of Palermo carried out some surveys from 2007. During the surveys more than 30 new topographic units of Late Antiquity were detected: some of them are big and accurately dated, others are small and difficult to interpret. Usually, they have located in easily accessible places, close to springs and the road system. Principally African pottery all…

2011

Two sites in Champagne-Ardennes are illustrative of the discontinuity of the vestiges of the phases of occupation during Late Antiquity. At Saint-Germain-la-Ville (Marne), a large rural building seems at first view to have been unoccupied between the 3rd and 6th centuries although the organisation of Merovingian buildings partly imitated that of the Early Empire. Despite the absence of relics that can be associated with certainty, a continuous presence seems to have been highly likely during the 4th and 5th centuries. At Semoine (Aube), the bulk of the objects from the 7th and 8th centuries found on the site were produced during Late Antiquity, while a single storeroom dates from that perio…

L’habitat perché du Malpas à Soyons (Ardèche) durant l’Antiquité tardive : état des données

2023

International audience; Recent excavations carried out between 2011-2016 in the ancient and medieval town of Soyons (Ardèche), located in the middle Rhône valley, in the territory of the roman colony of Valence, provide us new data on the occupation of the hilltop of Le Malpas. The study of the fortification of the Iron age has revealed the existence of a rampart built during the 3rd century AD. At this time, the lower city, under the actual village, is gradually abandoned. After a probable hiatus during the 4th century AD, the hilltop and the lower city grew again during the 5th and the 6th century AD. The late antique artefacts discovered in all the trenches dug on the Malpas let us assume…

Introduction: The Late Chalcolithic of Northern Mesopotamia in Context. Building on a Long and Eventful Debate

2022

Many of the debates that have until recently driven research into Mesopotamia’s proto-urban phase (5th– 4th millennia BCE) have now been reassessed thanks to new fieldwork in Iraqi Kurdistan and new data into the relationships between the north and south of the Alluvium from hitherto poorly-documented regions. These debates were re-examined in the light of this new material during a workshop held at the ICAANE in 2018 in Munich, leading to unprecedented perspectives on the patterns of early urbanization, social mobility, and the organization of Late Chalcolithic communities. Drawing on research first presented at ICAANE, and building on the most recent data from surveys and excavations, thi…
