Fine and Coarse Granular Argument Classification before Clustering

2021

Computational argumentation and especially argument mining together with retrieval enjoys increasing popularity. In contrast to standard search engines that focus on finding documents relevant to a query, argument retrieval aims at finding the best supporting and attacking premises given a query claim, e.g., from a predefined collection of arguments. Here, a claim is the central part of an argument representing the standpoint of a speaker with the goal to persuade the audience, and a premise serves as evidence to the claim. In addition to the actual retrieval process, existing work has focused on (1) classifying polarities of arguments into supporting or opposing, (2) classifying arguments …

What does insurance purchase behaviour say about risks?

2015

Purpose – This paper aims to explore the world of insurances as rites of adaptancy and resiliency before risk and disasters. The research on risks, both perceived and real, has become a frequent theme of academic research in the recent past. Design/methodology/approach – The information given by the superintendencia de Seguros de Buenos Aires involves 100 per cent of the insurances companies of Argentina. The reading of insurance demands corresponds with a new method in the studies of risks. Findings – Using advanced probability theory and quantitative techniques, risk management researchers have been able to construct sophisticated mathematical-statistical models of risk. Research limitat…

How teachers in different educational contexts view their roles

2003

Abstract Based on the premise that teachers’ perceptions of their professional roles are closely linked to their self images and their impact on the learning and achievement of their students, a study was conducted to investigate the relationship between the context of teachers’ work and their views of themselves as professionals. Sixty teachers in Israeli vocational senior high schools participated in the study. Half taught high-achieving and half low-achieving students. Teachers’ professional images of self were uncovered by asking them to match their images of themselves as teachers with drawings of other, carefully chosen, occupations and to comment on their choices. The use of metaphor…

The Third Theory of Legal Objectivity

2013

The question of the objectivity of law rotates around the determination of the status of the norms that constitute the major premise of the practical syllogism representing the formal scheme of the justification of judicial decisions. Those who deny the objectivity of law believe that the existence and meaning of legal norms depend on the opinion of judges and jurists considered individually. The different versions of the objectivity of law reject this sceptical conclusion. The strongest versions of objectivity accepted by the different doctrines of natural law presuppose metaphysical realism and rule out the idea that what seems correct to someone can determine what is effectively correct;…

Interpreting Connexive Principles in Coherence-Based Probability Logic

2021

We present probabilistic approaches to check the validity of selected connexive principles within the setting of coherence. Connexive logics emerged from the intuition that conditionals of the form If \(\mathord {\thicksim }A\), then A, should not hold, since the conditional’s antecedent \(\mathord {\thicksim }A\) contradicts its consequent A. Our approach covers this intuition by observing that for an event A the only coherent probability assessment on the conditional event \(A|\bar{A}\) is \(p(A|\bar{A})=0\). Moreover, connexive logics aim to capture the intuition that conditionals should express some “connection” between the antecedent and the consequent or, in terms of inferences, valid…

Implication of Human Capital in the Development of SMEs through the ICT Adoption

2013

Abstract ICT adoption in SMEs and the attraction of benefits from use of these technologies remains a key point in their development. For an enterprise to take part in the digital economy must have a defined basis for innovative adopting, meaning a premise for the development of ICT infrastructure. Given that firms are not a self-driven machinery, human capital is a major factor of influence in enterprise digitization. Considering this, in this paper will analyze the effects generated by human capital on the level of ICT adoption in SMEs in Romania.

Antidoping Science

2018

The ineffectiveness of antidoping programs in elite sport, largely due to human and political factors, is leading to a new resolve and greater transparency of antidoping authorities and those stakeholders interested in drug-free sport. The perception by the public, athletes, and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) of antidoping science and current drug testing programs in elite sport varies widely from "ineffective" to "robust and reliable." Here, we discuss why a careful and considered reevaluation of the underlying premise of antidoping science is needed to bring this unique application of predictive/diagnostic science more in line with other areas of medicine. We show how the validity of…

Market orientation and innovation: an inter‐relationship analysis

2005

PurposeMarket orientation analyses have focused on two broad‐ranging approaches: the behavioural and the philosophical. The concepts of innovation and market orientation are gaining ground steadily in the context of an increasingly competitive and highly volatile environment, subject to the pressures of rapid‐changing customer needs and desires. This premise underlies the general aim of this study, which is to determine to what extent companies operating in the same sector and with similar market orientation are similarly concerned about innovation.Design/methodology/approachThe population for this study comprises the leading 465 textile companies operating in Spain, listed in the ARDAN dat…
