Synchronous occurrence of two lateral periodontal cysts in the same patient. Report of a rare case and review of the literature
2020
We present a case of a patient with two lateral periodontal cysts in the maxilla and the mandible, respectively, and review the English literature on multiple lateral periodontal (LPCs) cysts and/or gingival cysts (GCs) and botryoid odontogenic cysts (BOCs). The patient was a 59 year-old female with two fluctuant swellings covered by semi-lucent mucosa on the attached gingiva between the maxillary and mandibular right canine and first premolar teeth, respectively. Periapical radiographs revealed at the respective sites between the roots of the canine and first premolar teeth areas unilocular radiolucencies. Intra-operatively, the presence of bone cavities was confirmed at both sites. The mi…
A skeletal Class III malocclusion with agenesis and canine-bicuspid transposition: a nonsurgical approach
2021
Abstract Background The present case report describes the orthodontic management of a patient who presented with a skeletal Class III malocclusion combined with other dental anomalies. The malocclusion was complicated by agenic maxillary lateral incisors and a lower right second premolar, in company with the transposition of the maxillary canines and premolars. Methods Dentoalveolar compensation of the anteroposterior jaw relationship was performed. The upper deciduous lateral incisors were extracted and the spaces closed, so that the first premolars replaced the missing lateral incisors while the canine transposition was maintained Results Satisfactory results were obtained which provided …
Effect of cusp coverage and water storage on compressive strength of composite restorations of premolars
2018
Background The aim of this study was to assess the effect of cusp coverage and water storage on compressive strength of composite restorations. Material and Methods This in vitro experimental study was conducted on 40 extracted human maxillary premolar teeth, which were randomly divided into four groups of 10. Mesio-occluso-distal (MOD) cavities were prepared in all teeth. The thickness of composite for cusp coverage was 1.5 mm in groups 1 and 3 and 2.5 mm in groups 2 and 4. Compressive strength (CS) was measured after 24 hours in groups 1 and 2 and after six months of water storage in groups 3 and 4. Two-way ANOVA was used to statistically analyze the data. Results The mean and standard er…
Effect of over-the-counter whitening strips and toothpaste on shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets
2021
Background To investigate: 1) the effects of over-the-counter white strip enamel bleaching and 2-Step whitening toothpaste application on the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets at 24-hours and 7-days post-bleaching latent period; and 2) the correlation between amount of bleaching and shear bond strength. Material and Methods Sixty human premolar teeth were randomly assigned into two bleaching groups, white strip group treated with Crest® 3D WHITE™ LUXE Professional Effects Whitestrips (Proctor & Gamble, Greensboro, NC), and whitening toothpaste group, treated with Crest® 3D WHITE™ BRILLIANCE 2-Step Toothpaste (Proctor & Gamble, Greensboro, NC). The groups were further divided into …
Mechanical behavior of implant assisted removable partial denture for Kennedy class II
2019
Made available in DSpace on 2020-12-12T01:22:13Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-01-01 Background: This study evaluated the mechanical response of a removable partial denture (RPD) in Kennedy Class II according to being associated or not with implants. Material and Methods: Four RPDs were manufactured for a Kennedy Class II: CRPD-Conventional RPD, RPD+ 1M, RPD+2M and RPD+12M, respectively, signifying implant assisted RPDs with the implant installed in the first molar, second molar, and in the first and second molars. The finite element method was used to determine the most damaged support tooth under compressive load (300N, 10s) and strain gauge analysis was used to ev…
Effect of orthodontic treatment involving first premolar extractions on mandibular third molar angulation and retromolar space
2016
Background Third molars present more problems than other teeth because they are the last teeth to erupt, and so it is important to assess their development when designing an orthodontic treatment plan. The aim of this study was to compare the angulation of the mandibular third molar and retromolar space before and after orthodontic treatment in cases involving first premolar extraction. Material and methods 76 patients, 59 women (77.63%) and 17 men (22.36%), were recruited from the Orthodontics Clinic at Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla (Mexico). Panoramic radiographs were analyzed before and after orthodontic treatment that included first premolar extractions, measuring retromolar…
Root canal treatment of dilacerated second maxillary premolars: Planning the shaping procedure
2018
This article aims at investigating endodontic anatomical variants in the human maxillary premolars allowing the planning of safer and faster shaping procedures. Endodontic literature describes maxillary 2nd premolars as some of the easiest teeth to treat, as they have either one or two straight canals. Rarely they may sometimes have two dilacerated canals. This paper reports two clinical cases of maxillary premolars whose anatomy is quite unusual. In the first case report we describe a maxillary 2nd premolar with a single root and two dilacerated merged canals. The second case report concerns the retreatment of a maxillary 2nd premolar with a single root and two independent dilacerated cana…
Changes in the alveolar bone thickness of maxillary incisors after orthodontic treatment involving extractions ? A systematic review and meta-analysis
2018
Background Orthodontic treatment involving en-masse retraction of incisors following premolar extractions, may induce morphological alterations of the alveolar bone surrounding the anterior teeth. Objective To assess changes in alveolar bone thickness around the incisors of extraction patients measured with CBCT. Material and methods An electronic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Cochrane Library, using search terms, with no limitation on publication date, up to April 2018. The articles selected for analysis included randomized controlled trials, case-control studies and cohort studies of patients treated with fixed appliances and premolar extractions, which had measured a…
Panoramic radiographic study of mental foramen in selected dravidians of south Indian population: A hospital based study
2015
Background: This study aimed at documenting information on appearance, size, horizontal and vertical locations of Mental Foramen (MF) in Panoramic Radiograph. We also analyzed the age and gender differences with radiographic appearance and location of MF. We evaluated these findings in our population and co-relate with results of previous studies. Material and Methods: 1662 panoramic radiographs were evaluated, of which 245 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Each radiograph was traced to record the horizontal and vertical locations. The size of MF was recorded using digital caliper and its appearance was determined by visual examination. Chi-square and t-test were employed. Results: The most…
The giant hyena Pachycrocuta brevirostris: Modelling the bone-cracking behavior of an extinct carnivore
2011
Abstract The giant hyena Pachycrocuta brevirostris was the largest bone-cracking carnivore that ever existed. With the mass of a lioness, it had massive limbs with shortened distal bones and a heavy, powerfully built mandible with robust, well-developed premolars. All these features reflect its adaptation for dismembering ungulate carcasses, transporting large pieces of them without dragging to the denning site and fracturing bones. This paper estimates the relative contribution of hunting and scavenging to the diet of this extinct hyena, using a combined biomechanical and taphonomic approach. Analysis of the bone-cracking behavior of P. brevirostris was based on the abundance of skeletal e…
