Social representations as a diagnostic tool for identifying cultural and other group differences

The aim of this research is to develop a procedure for data collection within a social representations perspective that may be of use in diverse contexts in which investigators wish to understand and compare the norms and values associated with a particular social object in different social or cultural groups. Traditional supervised learning with deep neural networks requires a tremendous amount of labelled data to converge to a good solution. For 3D medical images, it is often impractical to build a large homogeneous annotated dataset for a specific pathology. Self-supervised methods offer a new way to learn a representation of the images in an unsupervised manner with a neural network. Stiffness design of laminates using the polar method

This paper is devoted to the analysis of elastic properties of anisotropic laminas using the so-called polar representation method: this is an effective mathematical tool to analyse two-dimensional elastic problems. By this method, the authors have been able to find a particular class of solutions to some special inverse problems concerning laminates made by anisotropic layers. The properties of these solutions are described and discussed, along with some general results.

Acoustic vibrations of anisotropic nanoparticles

Acoustic vibrations of nanoparticles made of materials with anisotropic elasticity and nanoparticles with non-spherical shapes are theoretically investigated using a homogeneous continuum model. Cubic, hexagonal and tetragonal symmetries of the elasticity are discussed, as are spheroidal, cuboctahedral and truncated cuboctahedral shapes. Influence of orientation errors on quasi-homogeneity of composite laminates

This paper presents a study on the effects of layer orientation defects on the property of quasi-homogeneity for composite laminates: a measure of the deviation from quasi-homogeneity, introducing the concept of degree of quasi-homogeneity, is proposed. Complete theoretical developments which lead to exact formulae in the case of a single orientation error on a layer of the laminate are showed and the results of a wide numerical analysis in the case of orientation errors randomly distributed on the stacking sequence are also presented. All the theoretical and numerical calculations are developed thanks to the polar method of representation of fourth order tensors introduced by Verchery.

Associative and reflective connections between the limit of the difference quotient and limiting process

Abstract This paper reports a study of how students may connect the limiting process inherent in the derivative to the limit of the difference quotient (LDQ) when solving problems. The data was collected mainly through task-based interviews with five eleventh grade students. It was found that the students used various kinds of limiting processes and connected them in different ways to LDQ. Some of them changed between these two representations, and some students explained one with the other. An interactive version of the inverse modeling based multiobjective evolutionary algorithm is presented. Instead of generating a representation of the whole Pareto optimal front, the algorithm aims at producing solutions in the regions where the decision maker is interested in. This is facilitated through an interactive solution process where the decision maker iteratively evaluates a set of solutions shown to her/him and the preference information obtained is used to adapt the search process of the algorithm. peerReviewed

PAINT–SiCon: constructing consistent parametric representations of Pareto sets in nonconvex multiobjective optimization

We introduce a novel approximation method for multiobjective optimization problems called PAINT–SiCon. The method can construct consistent parametric representations of Pareto sets, especially for nonconvex problems, by interpolating between nondominated solutions of a given sampling both in the decision and objective space. The proposed method is especially advantageous in computationally expensive cases, since the parametric representation of the Pareto set can be used as an inexpensive surrogate for the original problem during the decision making process. peerReviewed
