Acquisition of Higher Order Knowledge by a Dynamic Modeling Environment Based on the Educational Concept of Self-Regulated Learning

2013

I aim to show that learning with this modeling based Educational Learning System (ELS) can accomplish the target of achieving higher order knowledge. The ELS is a system consisting of internal and external elements. The external prerequisites consist of technical and physical elements and the internal ones are shaped by the students pre-knowledge and the instructors teaching competencies including his/her social, emotional, and disciplinary knowledge necessary for teaching. The ELS is based on a theoretical framework of different theories and models such as concept mapping, elaboration of mental models, cognitive tool-approach, and self-regulated learning (SRL). Different features for visua…

Weighted nonlinear correlation for controlled discrimination capability

2002

We recently demonstrated the high discrimination capability as well as the high sensitivity to small intensity variations of the sliced orthogonal nonlinear generalized (SONG) correlation. This nonlinear correlation has a correlation matrix representation. Previous papers considered only the principal diagonal elements of the correlation matrix. We propose using the off-diagonal non-zero elements of the SONG correlation matrix in order to achieve variable discrimination performance and controlled detection adapted to the gray-scale variations. Moreover, we introduce negative coefficients in order to improve the discrimination properties of the SONG correlation. To control the degree of reco…

Plenoptic image watermarking to preserve copyright

2017

Common camera loses a huge amount of information obtainable from scene as it does not record the value of individual rays passing a point and it merely keeps the summation of intensities of all the rays passing a point. Plenoptic images can be exploited to provide a 3D representation of the scene and watermarking such images can be helpful to protect the ownership of these images. In this paper we propose a method for watermarking the plenoptic images to achieve this aim. The performance of the proposed method is validated by experimental results and a compromise is held between imperceptibility and robustness.

The United Nations and the European Union

2019

The European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN) are expressions of a rules-based global order. The EU has enshrined support to the UN in its security strategies, and its priorities indicate an engagement in a wide range of UN programs and activities to maintain the rules-based order and adapt it to face internal and external challenges. The EU and its member states are the largest contributors to the UN budget. Following the adoption of the Lisbon treaty, the EU has increased its representation at the UN, gaining enhanced observer status in the General Assembly. However, because of the intergovernmental nature of the forum, only its member states have the right to vote. This has led sch…

Latent Semantic Description of Iconic Scenes

2005

It is proposed an approach for the automatic description of scenes using a LSA–like technique. The described scenes are composed by a set of elements that can be geometric forms or iconic representation of objects. Every icon is characterized by a set of attributes like shape, colour and position. Each scene is related to a set of sentences describing their content. The proposed approach builds a data driven vector semantic space where the scenes and the sentences are mapped. A new scene can be mapped in this created space accordingly to a suitable metric. Preliminary experimental results show the effectiveness of the procedure.

A model study for the progressive disruption of CA1 firing properties during Alzheimer’s disease

2011

Several independent studies show that β-Amyloid (Aβ) peptides accumulation, one of the characteristic hallmark of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), can affect the normal neuronal activity in different ways causing an increase or a decrease in neuronal membrane excitability. For example, experimental evidence for a negative impact on neuronal membrane in animal models of AD has been obtained in dual patch recordings in rat hippocampal tissue slices, in which Aβ blocked K channels in pyramidal cell dendrites, causing an increase in dendritic membrane excitability. The resulting increased Ca2+ influx and excitoxicity may lead to dendritic degeneration. However, further experimental evidence suggests t…

Emotions, Motives, Individuals, and Cultures in Interaction

2016

Cognitive aspects of the human mind form the foundations of solving usability problems. However, being able to use a technology is not the only critical psychological question in the design of successful HTI. In addition to understanding users’ capabilities, it is equally important to comprehend their preferences and what they want to accomplish with the help of technologies. Knowledge of the dynamic mind—in particular human emotions, motives, and personality—helps address such ‘liking and wanting’ concerns in HTI design.

Farewell to representation: text and society

2017

Cultures develop the criteria to construct and recognize their texts, and pose them as normal, usual, ‘natural’. For us a book is a text, in Middle Ages for everyone a city was a text. But when it is necessary to critically inspect such a culture by analyzing its texts, it becomes necessary to understand their conditions of possibility and their functioning. So, from the semiotic point of view the text is something that needs to be recognized and constructed at the same time, that is to say invented according to the double meaning this word has for the ancient rhetoric (recovering) and for modern science (creating) (Marrone 2014). This is true for the semiotician who search for the fundamen…

Non-negative matrix factorization Vs. FastICA on mismatch negativity of children

2009

In this presentation two event-related potentials, mismatch negativity (MMN) and P3a, are extracted from EEG by non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) simultaneously. Typically MMN recordings show a mixture of MMN, P3a, and responses to repeated standard stimuli. NMF may release the source independence assumption and data length limitations required by Fast independent component analysis (FastICA). Thus, in theory NMF could reach better separation of the responses. In the current experiment MMN was elicited by auditory duration deviations in 102 children. NMF was performed on the time-frequency representation of the raw data to estimate sources. Support to Absence Ratio (SAR) of the MMN co…

Social representations and brand positioning in the sporting goods market

2013

Abstract This paper examines the use of social representations as a strategic tool to understand better and measure how consumers arrive at their identification of brand positioning (legitimacy and differentiation) in the brand's market. By considering the market as co-produced by brands and consumers (‘B&C approach’), this study classifies free-word associations connected to the brands into units of meanings, which constitute the core of a brand's market. We applied this tool to the four main brands in the French sporting goods market (i.e., Nike, Adidas, Reebok and Puma). Results show that the differentiation of brand positioning depends on legitimate elements of the market, such as adver…
