Adaptive memory representations of musical tempo and pitch
2009
Recent studies showed that the perception of extremely shifted versions of familiar pieces of music affects judgements about the original tempo and pitch. This paper aims to give an overview on musical adaptation effects (MAEs) for musical tempo and pitch. The focus is set on the questions if the recently found MAEs are generally comparable between the tempo and the pitch domain, and if they can be found to the same extent. In a series of eight empirical studies (N = 288, mean age = 26, SD = 8.6, 78 % female participants) the influence of extremely shifted versions (tempo-accelerated or pitch-shifted) of audio signals on memory representations was tested. Within this paper the focus will be…
Is addressable memory required for spatial cognition?: Poster
2021
This paper investigates the computational basis of the temporal and spatial cognition that underlies certain animal behaviours. For example, ants, when they find food, are able to encode the compass direction which takes them back to their nest. In their (2009) book, Memory and the Computational Brain (MCB), Gallistel and King articulate a classicist view: animals must do this using a symbolic, addressable, read-write memory. Here we challenge this view, arguing that complex behaviour can be explained by computational mechanisms which do not need to look like addressable random-access memory.

Content-Based Approach in Exploring the Cognitive Structure of Values
2012
This article discusses the content-based approach in examination of values. In the content-based approach, human thinking in different contexts is set at the focal point, and attention is devoted to those cognitive processes through which mental representations are constructed. The information contents of mental representations play a decisive role in understanding human behavior. By applying content-based analysis to an examination of the conceptual contents of human values, it is possible to reach a deeper understanding of the cognitive structure which lies as the motivational foundation of actions. In this article, it is argued that different informational contents of values explain vari…

Moment Map and Gelfand Transform for the Enveloping Algebra
2019
International audience; Describing the Gelfand construction for the analytic states on an universal enveloping algebra, we characterize pure states and re-find the main result of a preceding work with L. Abdelmoula and J. Ludwig on the separation of unitary irreducible representations of a connected Lie group by their generalized moment sets.
Sustainability Development in Mathematics Education : A Case Study of What Kind of Meanings Do Prospective Class Teachers Find for the Mathematical S…
2019
In this article, our focus is on sustainable development in mathematics education from the point of view of teacher training. The aim was to develop prospective teachers’ content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge of school mathematics. As a case study, we chose the mathematical symbol “a/b”, and examined how prospective class teachers in Finland connect it to the concepts of fraction, ratio, division, rational number or probability. Mathematics textbooks often have a central role in lessons, and they affect strongly how pupils understand concepts and the relationships between them. We chose languaging as a multi-semiotic approach to interpreting what kind of meanings the prospecti…
Global representation and multiscale expansion for the Dirichlet problem in a domain with a small hole close to the boundary
2019
For each pair (Formula presented.) of positive parameters, we define a perforated domain (Formula presented.) by making a small hole of size (Formula presented.) in an open regular subset (Formula presented.) of (Formula presented.) ((Formula presented.)). The hole is situated at distance (Formula presented.) from the outer boundary (Formula presented.) of the domain. Thus, when (Formula presented.) both the size of the hole and its distance from (Formula presented.) tend to zero, but the size shrinks faster than the distance. Next, we consider a Dirichlet problem for the Laplace equation in the perforated domain (Formula presented.) and we denote its solution by (Formula presented.) Our ai…
