Has the Push for Equal Gender Representation Changed the Role of Women on German Supervisory Boards?

2017

In Germany, an intensive public debate about increasing female participation in leadership positions started in 2009 and proceeded until the beginning of 2015, when the German parliament enacted a board gender quota. In that period, the share of women on supervisory boards for 111 German publicly listed and fully codetermined companies (i.e. those which are affected by the quota law) more than doubled from 10.6 percent in 2009 to 22.6 percent in 2015. In 2016, the first year when the law was effective, the female share increased again by 4.5 percentage points. Using a hand-collected dataset, we investigate whether the rise in female board representation was accompanied by a change in gender…

Egle Renata Trincanato. Unbuilt

2016

In the spring of 1947, the ‘Venetian’ architect took part in the competition, organized by the Municipality of Venice, for a series of houses to be built in the north and south estuary of the Venetian lagoon, obtaining the first and second prize, both ex aequo, with projects for residences proposals in Burano and Pellestrina. In these two unbuilt works, we can trace some important methodological aspects about the approach to the project by the architect who will make Venice the city subject of her later studies.

Sguardi di genere nel Sud Africa post-apartheid. Zanele Muholi e le immagini del mancante

2017

In June 2013 Palermo held the National Gay Pride. The opening of the manifestation was the solo photographic exhibition of Zanele Muholi. 25 photos of Being (2007), 21 of Faces & Phases (2009) and Caitilin and I (2009) are the corpus that this article wants to examine inside the main event of Palermo’s Gay Pride. The paper presents how Muholi’s works overturn the act of seeing by representing the image of the missing: exhibits how the invisible lesbian body problematized the local and national South African space (and not only that); it shows how the spatial exclusion of the not-disciplined bodies make visible the divisions of the spatial and gendered relations. The long story of the wo…

When everyone is special : gender representation in League of legends

2012

Median vaikutusta sukupuolirooleihin ja niiden tulkintaan on jo pitkään tutkittu eritoten televisiosarjojen osalta. Televisiosarjojen tavoin pelit tavoittavat usein suuria yleisöjä ja täten vaikuttavat jo tarjontansa puolesta käyttäjiensä odotuksiin sukupuoliroolien suhteen. Tästä huolimatta pelejä ja pelien välittämiä sukupuolirooleja on tutkittu verrattain vähän. Tämä työ tarkasteleekin, miten naishahmoja edustetaan suositussa League of Legends-pelissä ja millaisia sukupuolirooleja peli luo. Työn analyysi on jaettu kahteen osaan: ensiksi tarkastellaan pelissä esiintyvien hahmojen määrällistä suhdetta toisiinsa, eli kuinka moni pelin hahmoista on mies- tai naispuolinen, missä rooleissa hah…

Cytomegalovirus Interleukin-10 Expression in Infected Cells Does Not Impair MHC Class I Restricted Peptide Presentation on Bystanding Antigen-Present…

2006

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) has evolved strategies to counteract its surveillance by the immune system. Mitigation of antiviral immune responses is considered critical for establishment of viral latency and for spread. Recently, a gene encoding an interleukin-10 homologue (cmvIL-10) has been discovered in the HCMV genome. Using recombinant cmvIL-10, several mostly immunosuppressive functions of the molecule have been described. However, the role of cmvIL-10 in the context of viral infection was not addressed. To be able to analyze this issue, we generated cmvIL- 10-negative viral mutants. Using these mutants, we tested whether the expression of cmvIL-10 by infected cells would render bysta…

H2-Mβ1 and H2-Mβ2 Heterodimers Equally Promote CLIP Removal in I-Aq Molecules from Autoimmune-prone DBA/1 Mice

2001

Antigen-presenting cells degrade endocytosed antigens, e.g. collagen type II, into peptides that are bound and presented to arthritogenic CD4(+) helper T cells by major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules. Efficient loading of many MHC class II alleles with peptides requires the assistance of H2-M (HLA-DM in humans), a heterodimeric MHC class II-like molecule that facilitates CLIP removal from MHC class II molecules and aids to shape the peptide repertoire presented by MHC class II to CD4(+) T cells. In contrast to the HLA-DM region in humans, the beta-chain locus is duplicated in mice, with the H2-Mb1 beta-chain distal to H2-Mb2 and the H2-Ma alpha-chain gene. H2-M alleles …

2013

The MHC-class I (MHC-I)-like viral (MHC-Iv) m152 gene product of murine cytomegalovirus (mCMV) was the first immune evasion molecule described for a member of the β-subfamily of herpesviruses as a paradigm for analogous functions of human cytomegalovirus proteins. Notably, by interacting with classical MHC-I molecules and with MHC-I-like RAE1 family ligands of the activatory natural killer (NK) cell receptor NKG2D, it inhibits presentation of antigenic peptides to CD8 T cells and the NKG2D-dependent activation of NK cells, respectively, thus simultaneously interfering with adaptive and innate immune recognition of infected cells. Although the m152 gene product exists in differentially glyco…

Content-Based Approach in Exploring the Cognitive Structure of Values

2012

This article discusses the content-based approach in examination of values. In the content-based approach, human thinking in different contexts is set at the focal point, and attention is devoted to those cognitive processes through which mental representations are constructed. The information contents of mental representations play a decisive role in understanding human behavior. By applying content-based analysis to an examination of the conceptual contents of human values, it is possible to reach a deeper understanding of the cognitive structure which lies as the motivational foundation of actions. In this article, it is argued that different informational contents of values explain vari…

Accurate representation of the distributions of the 3D Poisson-Voronoi typical cell geometrical features

2019

Understanding the intricate and complex materials microstructure and how it is related to materials properties is an important problem in the Materials Science field. For a full comprehension of this relation, it is fundamental to be able to describe the main characteristics of the 3-dimensional microstructure. The most basic model used for approximating steel microstructure is the Poisson-Voronoi diagram. Poisson-Voronoi diagrams have interesting mathematical properties, and they are used as a good model for single-phase materials. In this paper we exploit the scaling property of the underlying Poisson process to derive the distribution of the main geometrical features of the grains for ev…

2021

This paper proposes a new method for blind mesh visual quality assessment (MVQA) based on a graph convolutional network. For that, we address the node classification problem to predict the perceived visual quality. First, two matrices representing the 3D mesh are considered: a graph adjacency matrix and a feature matrix. Both matrices are used as input to a shallow graph convolutional network. The network consists of two convolutional layers followed by a max-pooling layer to provide the final feature representation. With this structure, the Softmax classifier predicts the quality score category without the reference mesh’s availability. Experiments are conducted on four publicly available …
