Internal Hernia Masquerading As Necrotizing Enterocolitis

2017

In extremely preterm infants, acute abdominal emergencies are fortunately less common with improving care. Spontaneous intestinal perforation and necrotizing enterocolitis are conditions where emergency surgery is most often needed. Conservative medical management and placement of temporary drain are often used in the initial management. Internal hernia (IH) is an uncommon cause of bowel obstruction in neonates, is difficult to diagnose and unfortunately are found only at autopsy. The presentation in preterm infants, distinction between these conditions, and the need for early diagnosis of IH are discussed.

The Study of the Impact of Erasmus+ Mobility Projects on Participants. Data Analysis at “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu

2020

The aim of the Erasmus+ programme is to develop the sense of belonging to “European values” through mobility projects, and therefore, it focuses on a range of steps, in order to achieve its goal, such as the improvement of a foreign language, the development of personal and professional skills, the acquirement of knowledge and competences, so that the beneficiaries are prepared for on a global labour market, and have access to higher technology. The following data presentation and analysis have the purpose to bring forward the main impact of Erasmus+ mobility projects on LBUS’ students and LBUS alumni. The purpose is also to highlight the achievements declared by the beneficiaries and deter…

REDES Y (CIBER)FEMINISMOS.

An Online Inquiry Tool to Support the Exploration of Controversial Issues on the Internet

2016

This paper describes a theoretically informed Online Inquiry Tool designed to support the exploration of controversial issues on the Internet. The tool’s design is grounded in principles associated with theories of online research and comprehension, argumentation for learning, representational guidance, and cognitive load. The purpose of the tool is to help students organize, monitor, and regulate several complex cognitive activities likely to present challenges during online inquiry. Supports are embedded into the digital tool to help students plan their information search around a controversial issue, identify supporting arguments and counterarguments related to this issue, critically eva…

Virtual Space and the Contention over Representations of the City

2015

The European Capital of Culture (ECOC) is one of the longest running cultural initiatives of the European Union (EU). The EU annually designates one or more cities with this much-competed-for city brand. In various cities the ECOC designation has caused tensions and disagreements over the decision-making process, funding of cultural events, and the use of urban space. These disputes have also generated urban activism that uses various platforms to contest ECOC policies: public discussions in the local media, Internet sites and blogs, as well as alternative events and activities organised by the citizens themselves. This chapter investigates the conflict related to the ECOC designation of Tu…

Rough Pragmatic Description Logic

2013

In this chapter, a rough description logic is built on the basis of a pragmatic standpoint of representation of knowledge. The pragmatic standpoint has influenced the acceptance of a broader definition of the semantic network than that appearing in the literature. The definition of the semantic network is a motivation of the introduced semantics of the language of the descriptive logic. First, the theoretical framework of representation of knowledge that was proposed in the papers [24,25] is adjusted to the description of data processing. The pragmatic system of knowledge representation is determined, as well as situations of semantic adequacy and semantic inadequacy for represented knowled…

Variations on Weyl's theorem

2006

AbstractIn this note we study the property (w), a variant of Weyl's theorem introduced by Rakočević, by means of the localized single-valued extension property (SVEP). We establish for a bounded linear operator defined on a Banach space several sufficient and necessary conditions for which property (w) holds. We also relate this property with Weyl's theorem and with another variant of it, a-Weyl's theorem. We show that Weyl's theorem, a-Weyl's theorem and property (w) for T (respectively T*) coincide whenever T* (respectively T) satisfies SVEP. As a consequence of these results, we obtain that several classes of commonly considered operators have property (w).

Representations of individuals in discourses oflaïcitéfromLe Monde: confirming or challenging the republican framework of identity?

2016

ABSTRACTIn recent decades, the notions of laicite and identity have been subjects of controversy in France. The two concepts have become sufficiently co-associated since the 1990s to ensure each almost systematically entails the other. Findings from previous studies have pointed out harmful implications of this pervasive association for minorities in France, especially Muslims. This study examines further the ways laicite and identity are interwoven by exploring who is represented (and how) in newspaper articles from Le Monde dealing with laicite. Informed by critical intercultural communication scholarship, intersectionality, and a Foucaultian approach to discourse, this study pays particu…

INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE: PERCEPTION AND REPRESENTATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN GUANAJUATO. A QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

Intimate partner violence and domestic violence refer to the violation of women’s rights, often provoked by socio-cultural norms based on a patriarchal matrix. In Mexican society, in particular, gender-based violence affects the physical and psychological well-being of Mexican women. Moreover, the social representations of women who suffer violence and the lack of an effective legislative framework often reproduce the legitimation of gender-based violence, enhancing negative stereotypes and prejudices. In this scenario, the voice of the women who suffer violence in intimate relationships is silenced. In particular, in public and academic debates the impact and consequences of violence again…

Functionally Active T Cell Receptor/CD3 Complexes Are Present at the Surface of Cloned Cytotoxic T Cells without Fluorescence-Immunological Detectabi…

1996

The cytotoxic T cell clone 10BK.1 is activated in response to the ovalbumin peptide OVA257-264 in a major histocompatibility complex class I-restricted manner. Following activation 10BK.1 cells proliferate, secrete lymphokines, and kill syn- and allogeneic target cells. Using immunofluorescence analysis we detected CD8, LFA-1, and ICAM-1 on the surface of 10BK.1 cells, but no CD3 or T cell receptor (TCR). In contrast, the proliferative response of 10BK.1 cells to antigen was efficiently blocked by soluble antibodies directed at CD3 epsilon or TCR alpha beta, but not by antibodies directed at TCR gamma delta. In addition, lysis of target cells was blocked by F(ab')2 fragments of antibodies d…
