Effect on Orange Juice of Batch Pasteurization in an Improved Pilot-Scale Microwave Oven
2010
The effects on orange juice batch pasteurization in an improved pilot-scale microwave (MW) oven was evaluated by monitoring pectin methyl-esterase (PME) activity, color, carotenoid compounds and vitamin C content. Trials were performed on stirred orange juice heated at different temperatures (60, 70, 75, and 85 degrees C) during batch process. MW pilot plant allowed real-time temperature control of samples using proportional integrative derivative (PID) techniques based on the infrared thermography temperature read-out. The inactivation of heat sensitive fraction of PME, that verifies orange juice pasteurization, showed a z-value of 22.1 degrees C. Carotenoid content, responsible for sensor…
Interface and aroma barrier properties of iota-carrageenan emulsion–based films used for encapsulation of active food compounds
2009
Abstract Food quality preservation requires that the initial properties of the food products be maintained by protecting them from the environment and by limiting the gain or loss of external matter. Barrier edible films can preserve food quality by controlling moisture transfer, oxygen uptake or the loss of volatile aroma compounds. Edible films made of iota-carrageenans display interesting advantages: good mechanical properties, stabilization of emulsions and reduction in oxygen transfer. Moreover, lipid globules incorporated as emulsion-based films can be the carriers for the encapsulation of active volatile molecules such as flavor compounds. Such films also enhance the barrier properti…
Towards resilient cities: Advancements allowed by a multi-criteria optimization tool to face the new challenges of European Union’s climate and energ…
2019
Abstract The United Nations as well as the European Union are strongly committed in promoting a transition towards more sustainable and resilient cities. Indeed, they are increasingly affected by different types of threats, among which the natural ones such as earthquakes, fires, and floods (shocks) and climate variability (stresses). Cities are quite often unable to cope with the adverse effects of such natural hazards. This circumstance leads to the need of introducing resilience-related criteria (besides commonly used sustainability indicators) in decision-making processes. This paper investigates at which extent the inclusion of such new indicators, within multi-criteria assessment tool…
Recovery and refurbishment of the buildings of the former Gulì textile factory in Palermo
2019
The industrial activity of Palermo, despite having lived a rather short prosperous period, has left traces that are well recognizable and identifiable with architectural artefacts of considerable importance for design quality and size. The Gulì factory, designed by the architect Pietro Scibilia, a pupil of Ernesto Basile, is a piece of history incorporated into the urban fabric. In fact, the designer is a key player in the quality of the Palermo building production of the last century and the Gulì factory is an interesting complex both from the architectural point of view and its urban location, very close to the historical center and significant cultural interest poles. The architectural s…
Recovery and refurbishment of the buildings of the former Gulì textile factory in Palermo
2019
New skulls of the basal sauropodomorph Plateosaurus trossingensis from Frick, Switzerland: is there more than one species?
2021
The Triassic basal sauropodomorph Plateosaurus trossingensis is well-known from mass accumulations at the German localities of Trossingen and Halberstadt and the Swiss locality of Frick, and is significant especially regarding its ta-phonomy and proposed developmental plasticity. These implications, however, rely on the assumption that this material derives from a single species, which has been questioned. Here we describe new skull material from Frick including eight complete and six partial skulls, more than doubling the number of known skulls of P. trossingensis. This exceptional sample size allows for gaining a deeper understanding of variability that may occur in a single species. The …
Ionic Liquid Gels: Tunable and Multifaceted Materials
Materials based on ionic liquids retain properties of solvent components, like low vapor pressure, high thermal stability and structure tunability. The latter allows changing properties of materials by making small variations in the cation or anion structure, opening the way to a plethora of different applications. In this context, ionic liquid gels can represent a challenge especially if they are obtained from gelation of ionic liquid binary mixtures or of organic salts in ionic liquids. In the framework of our interest in studying ionic liquids properties and applications, in the last few years, we have addressed our attention to the obtainment of ionic liquid gels.1 We have deeply invest…
Tre Sicilie: nascita, distruzione e ri-ciclo dei paesaggi siciliani
2015
Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery for the Treatment of Symptomatic Uterine Fibroids
2017
Uterine fibroids, the most common benign tumor in women of childbearing age, may cause symptoms including pelvic pain, menorrhagia, dysmenorrhea, pressure, urinary symptoms, and infertility. Various approaches are available to treat symptomatic uterine fibroids. Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery (MRgFUS) represents a recently introduced noninvasive safe and effective technique that can be performed without general anesthesia, in an outpatient setting. We review the principles of MRgFUS, describing patient selection criteria for the treatments performed at our center and we present a series of five selected patients with symptomatic uterine fibroids treated with this not y…
Data from: Burying beetles regulate the microbiome of carcasses and use it to transmit a core microbiota to their offspring
2017
Necrophagous beetles utilize carrion, a highly nutritious resource that is susceptible to intense microbial competition, by treating it with antimicrobial anal and oral secretions. However, how this regulates the carcass microbiota remains unclear. Here, we show that carcasses prepared by the burying beetle Nicrophorus vespilloides undergo significant changes in their microbial communities subsequent to their burial and ‘preparation’. Prepared carcasses hosted a microbial community that was more similar to that of beetles’ anal and oral secretions than to the native carcass community or the surrounding soil, indicating that the beetles regulated the carcass microbiota. A core microbial comm…
