Systematic analysis of esophageal pressure topography in high-resolution manometry of 68 normal volunteers

2013

Summary The introduction of high-resolution manometry (HRM) has been a significant advance in esophageal diagnostics. Normative values however are currently based upon a single set of published reference values, and multiple new metrics have been added over the past several years. Our goal was to provide a second set of ‘normal-values’ and to include all current metrics suggested by the 2012 Chicago classification. Sixty-eight subjects without foregut symptoms or previous surgery (median age 25.5 years, ranging from 20–58 years, 53% female) underwent esophageal motility assessment via an established standardized protocol. Normative thresholds were calculated for esophago-gastric junction (E…

Rapid hemodilution induced by desmopressin after erythropoietin administration in humans

2011

We have shown that treatment with desmopressin has a very effective hemodilution effect in healthy humans. These results led us to suggest the possible role of desmopressin to mask blood doping in sports. Based on our results, the World Anti-Doping Agency included the desmopressin in the 2011 List of Prohibited Substances and Methods. On this occasion, the aim of our study was to test the desmopressin-induced hemodilution after rHuEpo administration in humans. This was an intra-subject, crossover study in which five physically active males acted as their own controls. A basal blood sample was taken on their first visit to the laboratory. The next day, the subjects began the treatment. They …

Arteriovenöse Dissektion (AVD) bei retinalen Venolenastverschlüssen

2009

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to report on arteriovenous sheathotomy in branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) with a long-term follow-up and examine the visual field effects of this surgical approach. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a clinical trial 36 eyes with branch retinal vein occlusion (22 eyes with ischaemia, 14 eyes with chronic macular oedema) underwent surgical decompression accompanied by peeling of the membrana limitans interna after prior isovolemic haemodilution for 3 months had been unsuccessfull. RESULTS: All eyes showed a significant reduction of macular oedema 3 months after surgery. During follow-up (median: 26.4 months) visual acuity increased in 24 / 36 eyes and was stab…

Perception of improved state of health and subjective quality of life in Crohn's disease patients treated with Infliximab.

2009

International audience; UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND AND AIMS AND METHOD: Although Infliximab is a very potent therapy of refractory Crohn's disease, its administration requires iterative infusions in hospital and there are concerns regarding its long-term safety. The aim of this study was to assess in a sample of 51 patients suffering from CD the impact of type of treatment (intravenous Infliximab versus conventional therapy without Infliximab) on the evaluation of the state of health (CGI) and the quality of life (MOS-SF36). Secondary variables were also assessed: the impact of depression (MADRS), the impact of activity of the disease (Harvey-Bradshaw Index). RESULTS: Overall, the assessments m…

Normierung und Evaluation der Messinvarianz der 8-Item-Kurzform der Center of Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D-8)

2020

Measurement invariance and normative data of the 8-item short form of the Center of Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D-8) Objectives: Female gender is a risk factor for depression. It is questionable whether a given psychometric instrument depicts depressive symptom severity in men and women alike. Therefore, we examined measurement invariance of the Center of Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale-8 (CES-D-8) between women, men and different age groups. Additionally, we aimed providing normative data for CES-D-8. Methods: We assessed depressive symptoms in a German population-based sample (N = 2,507) with the CES-D-8. Gender-distorted items were excluded in the short form. R…

Characterization of endogenous noradrenaline release from intact and epithelium-denuded rat isolated trachea.

1991

1. Overflow of endogenous noradrenaline (NA) from the in vitro incubated rat trachea evoked by two periods of electrical field stimulation (S1, S2 at 3 or 15 Hz) or by high potassium (60 mM) was determined by high performance liquid chromatography (h.p.l.c.) with electrochemical detection. 2. In the presence of the neuronal uptake inhibitor desipramine, the alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonist, yohimbine, enhanced the overflow of NA evoked by stimulation at 3 Hz by about 100% suggesting the presence of presynaptic inhibitory autoreceptors on the sympathetic nerves innervating the trachea. 3. When desipramine and yohimbine were present throughout the experiments, the overflow of NA evoked by the …

Determination of a strength index for upper body local endurance strength in sedentary individuals: a cross sectional analysis.

2015

A range of balance between flexor and extensor muscles is fundamental in order to prevent pathologies caused by bad postures or to ensure health of the joint as a measure of prevention of overtraining in specific muscle groups. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine the ratio between “pulling” and “pushing” strength in sedentary individuals. 212 healthy participants, of both genders (139 male and 73 female; age 32 ± 13.3 years, weight 70.2 ± 14.1 kg, height 173 ± 9 cm) were retained for investigation. Strength was assessed through a new methodology: Pulling through a lat-pulldown test while pushing strength through a chest-press test. Both tests were performed to exhaustion with an …

Somatic symptoms and level of anxiety and depression in self-referral patients at the emergency department

2020

Background. Due to multiple morbidities, patients experience various symptoms that may be of psychogenic or somatic origin. Anxiety and depression can induce somatization and the feeling that ailments require urgent medical intervention. Aim of the study. This study aimed to: (1) identify which symptoms self-referral patients most commonly report at the emergency department (ED) and which medical diagnoses they are discharged with; and (2) determine whether the type and severity of symptoms, as well as, sociodemographic variables are related to anxiety and depression levels. Material and methods. The study included 110 patients who self-referred to the ED at the University Clinical Hospital…

Biopterin metabolism and eNOS expression during hypoxic pulmonary hypertension in mice.

2013

International audience; Tetrahydrobiopterin (BH$_4$), which fosters the formation of and stabilizes endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) as an active dimer, tightly regulates eNOS coupling / uncoupling. Moreover, studies conducted in genetically-modified models demonstrate that BH$_4$ pulmonary deficiency is a key determinant in the pathogenesis of pulmonary hypertension. The present study thus investigates biopterin metabolism and eNOS expression, as well as the effect of sepiapterin (a precursor of BH$_4$) and eNOS gene deletion, in a mice model of hypoxic pulmonary hypertension. In lungs, chronic hypoxia increased BH$_4$ levels and eNOS expression, without modifying dihydrobiopterin (BH$_2$, t…
