Acute arterial stiffness, testosterone and force production responses and recovery from different combined strength and endurance loading models

2017

Much of the differences between strength (S) and endurance (E) exercise can be attributed to the contrasting endocrinological and molecular responses between the two exercise modes. From the current literature, it seems that aortic arterial stiffness, a reliable cardiovascular mortality predictor, also responds differently to these two modes of exercise. It is thus important to understand the acute responses that combined exercise loads may invoke, as acute responses are known to drive chronic adaptations. Furthermore, testosterone has been cited as a key hormone in cardiovascular protection and its effects may mediate blood flow and hemodynamics. Currently, there are very few studies inves…

Pannelli traslucidi preassemblati “a secco” e precompressi realizzati con vetromattoni “modificati”

2011

Mūsdienu sociālo problēmu attainojums Kameronas Geretas romānā „Off the Record”

2022

Šajā darbā aplūkotas mūsdienu sociālās problēmas, kas saistītas ir seksuālo vardarbību un seksismu, un atspoguļotas Kameronas Geretas 2021. gadā sarakstītajā romānā "Off the Record". Romāna pamatā ir #MeToo - kustība pret seksuālo vardarbību un uzmākšanos, kurā no vardarbības cietušās personas bezbailīgi dalās savā pieredzē, izmantojot sociālās platformas. Pētījumā tiek analizēts šo problēmu atainojums #MeToo kustības kontekstā. Dati apkopoti izmantojot romānu un #MeToo sociālās kustības gadījuma izpēti. Šajā darbā izmantota stāstījuma analīze, kurā pierādījumi no literatūras tiek izmantota kā primārie dati. Pētījumā izmantota kvalitatīvā pētījumu metode, kurā autors veicis dziļo lasīšanu u…

Study of the interactions between Broad bean wilt virus 1 and its host plants

Broad bean wilt virus 1 (BBWV-1) is the type member of the Fabavirus genus, in the Secoviridae family. BBWV-1 is worldwide distributed and infects important horticultural and ornamental crops causing considerable economic losses. However, information about the biological and molecular characteristics of BBWV-1 isolates is scarce. BBWV-1 is composed of two molecules of positive single-stranded RNA (ssRNA+) that are separately encapsidated in virions of icosahedral morphology. Each ssRNA+ encodes polyproteins which are processed by proteolytic cleavage into functional peptides. RNA1 (~ 5.8 kb) encodes for one polyprotein that renders proteins involved in viral replication: a protease cofactor…

Behavioral Activation through Virtual Reality for Depression: A Single Case Experimental Design with Multiple Baselines

2022

Behavioral activation (BA) is a structured psychotherapeutic approach for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD), which aims at increasing the engagement in activities that might bring enjoyment and meaning to patients’ lives. Although a growing body of evidence supports the effectiveness of BA, enhancing the motivation and activity level of depressed patients is often challenging. In the present study, we explored the effectiveness of a brief BA treatment supported by virtual reality (VR) to facilitate the visualization and anticipation of four pleasurable activities that we tried to re-introduce in the patients’ daily routine. To do so, we conducted a single-case experimental de…

The endogenous retroviral insertion in the human complement C4 gene modulates the expression of homologous genes by antisense inhibition

2001

Intron 9 contains the complete endogenous retrovirus HERV-K(C4) as a 6.4-kb insertion in 60% of human C4 genes. The retroviral insertion is in reverse orientation to the C4 coding sequence. Therefore, expression of C4 could lead to the transcription of an antisense RNA, which might protect against exogenous retroviral infections. To test this hypothesis, open reading frames from the HERV sequence were subcloned in sense orientiation into a vector allowing expression of a beta-galactosidase fusion protein. Mouse L cells which had been stably transfected with either the human C4A or C4B gene both carrying the HERV insertion (LC4 cells), and L(Tk-) cells without the C4 gene were transiently tr…

Infection-induced chromatin modifications facilitate translocation of herpes simplex virus capsids to the inner nuclear membrane

2021

Herpes simplex virus capsids are assembled and packaged in the nucleus and move by diffusion through the nucleoplasm to the nuclear envelope for egress. Analyzing their motion provides conclusions not only on capsid transport but also on the properties of the nuclear environment during infection. We utilized live-cell imaging and single-particle tracking to characterize capsid motion relative to the host chromatin. The data indicate that as the chromatin was marginalized toward the nuclear envelope it presented a restrictive barrier to the capsids. However, later in infection this barrier became more permissive and the probability of capsids to enter the chromatin increased. Thus, although …

Genomic structure and promoter analysis of pathogen-inducedrepatgenes fromSpodoptera exigua

2009

The repat gene family encodes midgut proteins overexpressed in response to pathogen infection in the lepidopteran Spodoptera exigua. Up-regulation of repat genes has been observed after challenging the larvae with both Bacillus thuringiensis toxins and after infection with the baculovirus Autographa californica multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus. In our study, PCR amplification of the genomic region and genome walking were used to obtain the genomic structure and the sequence of the 5'-upstream region of repat1 and repat2, two of the most phylogenetically distant members of the repat family. A similar gene structure between repat1 and repat2 has been found, with conserved exon-intron positions a…
