Alexithymia and facial emotion recognition in patients with eating disorders
2006
Objective: Patients with anorexia or bulimia nervosa are reported to show high levels of alexithymia and to have difficulties recognizing facially displayed emotions. The current study tested whether it could be that facial emotion recognition is a basic skill that is independent from alexithymia. Method: We assessed emotion recognition skills and alexithymia in a group of 79 female inpatients with eating disorders and compared them with a group of 78 healthy female controls. Instruments used were the Toronto Alexithymia Scale, the Facially Expressed Emotion Labeling (FEEL) test, and the revised Symptom Check List (SCL-90-R). Results: There were no significant differences between patients a…
Underlying Factors in the Association between Depressed Mood and Mobility Limitation in Older People
2006
<i>Background:</i> Depressed mood may either precede mobility limitation or follow from mobility limitation. <i>Objective:</i> To compare mood status among people with manifestmobility limitation, those with preclinical mobility limitation and those without mobility limitation and investigate factors explaining the association between depressed mood and mobility limitation. <i>Design:</i> Cross-sectional. Subjects: 645 community-living 75- to 81-year-old people. <i>Methods:</i> Depressed mood was assessed using the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D, cut-off score 16); difficulty walking 500 m was assessed by self-report.…
Large-scale gene discovery in the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum (Hemiptera)
2006
A large-scale sequencing analysis of the Hemiptera Acyrthosiphon pisumexpressed sequence tags corresponding to about 12,000 unique transcripts is described, along with an in silico profiling analysis that identifies 135 aphid tissue-specific transcripts.
Pottery decoration in the Neolithic of Kaf Taht el-Ghar (Tetouan, Morocco). AGRIWESTMED Works 2012
2021
Through the study of the unpublished information noted in the volumes deposited in the Fund of the Suppressed Religious Corporations of the State Archives of Palermo, it is possible to reconstruct the collection of silverware of the monastery of the Holy Savior of Corleone, now unfortunately largely lost, bringing t…
LogDet divergence-based metric learning with triplet constraints and its applications.
2014
How to select and weigh features has always been a difficult problem in many image processing and pattern recognition applications. A data-dependent distance measure can address this problem to a certain extent, and therefore an accurate and efficient metric learning becomes necessary. In this paper, we propose a LogDet divergence-based metric learning with triplet constraints (LDMLT) approach, which can learn Mahalanobis distance metric accurately and efficiently. First of all, we demonstrate the good properties of triplet constraints and apply it in LogDet divergence-based metric learning model. Then, to deal with high-dimensional data, we apply a compressed representation method to learn…
Downregulation of a Chitin Deacetylase-Like Protein in Response to Baculovirus Infection and Its Application for Improving Baculovirus Infectivity
2009
ABSTRACT Several expressed sequence tags (ESTs) with homology to chitin deacetylase-like protein (CDA) were selected from a group of Helicoverpa armigera genes whose expression changed after infection with H. armigera single nucleopolyhedrovirus (HearNPV). Some of these ESTs coded for a midgut protein containing a chitin deacetylase domain (CDAD). The expressed protein, HaCDA5a, did not show chitin deacetylase activity, but it showed a strong affinity for binding to chitin. Sequence analysis showed the lack of any chitin binding domain, described for all currently known peritrophic membrane (PM) proteins. HaCDA5a has previously been detected in the H. armigera PM. Such localization, togethe…
Verso una dimensione narrativa delle mappe
2021
TREM-1 ligand expression on platelets enhances neutrophil activation
2007
Abstract The triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 1 (TREM-1) plays an important role in the innate immune response related to severe infections and sepsis. Modulation of TREM-1–associated activation improves the outcome in rodent models for pneumonia and sepsis. However, the identity and occurrence of the natural TREM-1 ligands are so far unknown, impairing the further understanding of the biology of this receptor. Here, we report the presence of a ligand for TREM-1 on human platelets. Using a recombinant TREM-1 fusion protein, we demonstrate specific binding of TREM-1 to platelets. TREM-1–specific signals are required for the platelet-induced augmentation of polymorphonuclear leu…
Divergently Transcribed Overlapping Genes Expressed in Liver and Kidney and Located in the 11p15.5 Imprinted Domain
1998
Human chromosomal band 11p15.5 has been shown to contain genes involved in the development of several pediatric and adult tumors and in Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS). Overlapping P1 artificial chromosome clones from this region have been used as templates for genomic sequencing in an effort to identify candidate genes for these disorders. PowerBLAST identified several matches with expressed sequence tags (ESTs) from fetal brain and liver cDNA libraries. Northern blot analysis indicated that two of the genes identified by these ESTs encode transcripts of 1-1.5 kb with predominant expression in fetal and adult liver and kidney. With RT-PCR and RACE, full-length transcripts were isolated f…
