Diffusive equilibrium properties of O2 in amorphous SiO2 nanoparticles probed via dependence of concentration on size and pressure

2014

An experimental study on the diffusive equilibrium value of interstitial O2 in silica nanoparticles was carried out on samples with average particles diameter 40, 14, and 7 nm. The investigation was performed by measuring the concentration of interstitial O2 by Raman and photoluminescence techniques. The dependence of diffusive equilibrium concentration on pressure and temperature was investigated in the pressure range from 0.2 to 76 bar and in the temperature range from 98 to 244 °C. The equilibrium concentration of interstitial O2 follows Henry’s law at pressures below 13 bar whereas a departure from this model is observed at higher pressures. In particular, O2 concentration saturates abo…

Cascade of exotic helium atoms

1987

Abstract The cascade of muonic helium and its pressure dependence has been calculated over the whole pressure range from 1×10 −2 to 1×10 3 atm. The calculation does not use any free parameter. The results show good agreement with experimental data.

Pressure-induced magnetic collapse and metallization of TlFe1.6Se2

2017

The crystal structure, magnetic ordering, and electrical resistivity of $\mathrm{TlF}{\mathrm{e}}_{1.6}\mathrm{S}{\mathrm{e}}_{2}$ were studied at high pressures. Below $\ensuremath{\sim}7\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{GPa}$, $\mathrm{TlF}{\mathrm{e}}_{1.6}\mathrm{S}{\mathrm{e}}_{2}$ is an antiferromagnetically ordered semiconductor with a $\mathrm{ThC}{\mathrm{r}}_{2}\mathrm{S}{\mathrm{i}}_{2}$-type structure. The insulator-to-metal transformation observed at a pressure of $\ensuremath{\sim}7\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{GPa}$ is accompanied by a loss of magnetic ordering and an isostructural phase transition. In the pressure range $\ensuremath{\sim}7.5\text{--}11\phantom{\rule{…

Thermal and high-pressure stability of purified polygalacturonase and pectinmethylesterase from four different tomato processing varieties

2006

Abstract Polygalacturonase (PG) and pectinmethylesterase (PME) were extracted and purified from four tomato varieties (Galeon, Malpica, Perfectpeel and Soto) used in the processing industry. The processing stability (thermal and high pressure) of PG and PME from the four varieties was analyzed, and they all showed the same behavior. PG was present in two isoforms, PG1 (inactivated at 90 °C, 5 min) and PG2 (inactivated at 65 °C, 5 min). In contrast, PG1s and PG2s showed the same pressure stability, both can be inactivated at room temperature in the pressure range of 300–500 MPa. On the other hand, purified PMEs could be thermally inactivated (5 min, 70 °C) but 50% of its activity remained af…

Strong enhancement of superconductivity at high pressures within the charge-density-wave states of2H−TaS2and2H−TaSe2

2016

We present measurements of the superconducting and charge density wave critical temperatures (Tc and TCDW) as a function of pressure in the transition metal dichalchogenides 2H-TaSe2 and 2H-TaS2. Resistance and susceptibility measurements show that Tc increases from temperatures below 1 K up to 8.5 K at 9.5 GPa in 2H-TaS2 and 8.2 K at 23 GPa in 2H-TaSe2. We observe a kink in the pressure dependence of TCDW at about 4 GPa that we attribute to the lock-in transition from incommensurate CDW to commensurate CDW. Above this pressure, the commensurate TCDW slowly decreases coexisting with superconductivity within our full pressure range.

It is possible to prepare phenol alcohols in good yields by reduction of phenol aldehydes with hydrogen in the presence of RANEY nickel and even at room temperature and normal pressure contrary to literature references. The reduction of phenol carboxylic acid esters by LiAlH4 is a suitable preparation …

The phenomenon of “true cosolvency”, which has only recently been observed in the system acetone/diethyl ether/polystyrene (AC/DEE/PS), is investigated with regard to its pressure dependence and compared with the thermodynamic behaviour of the corresponding binary sub-systems. For the determination of the limits of complete solubility, a pressure apparatus was used which had been constructed, in order to measure the turbidity of fluids in the temperature range of −70 to +500°Cand in the pressure range of 1 to 4000 bar (105 to 4·108 Nm−2). The critical line observed for the system DEE/PS (MPS=20400) looks similar to that reported for AC/PS in the literature, i.e. the upper critical solution …

Structure and electrical resistivity of mixed-valent EuNi2P2 at high pressure.

2014

The structural properties and electrical resistivity of homogeneous mixed-valent EuNi2P2 are studied at pressures up to 45 GPa. No structural phase transition is observed in the whole pressure range and the overall pressure behavior of the structural parameters is similar to that of related compounds in the collapsed tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure. Electrical resistivity measured up to 31 GPa at temperatures between 4 and 300 K exhibits continuous changes from the behavior typical for a mixed-valent Eu system to that of a normal metallic system at pressures above 20 GPa, indicating a transition of the strongly mixed-valent Eu atoms with a valence ~2.5 towards a pure trivalent state. No …

Chronic Adult Hydrocephalus

1974

Knowledge of Wallerian degeneration began in 1852 and, following experimental research on degeneration and regeneration of interrupted nerves, surgeons realized that reinnervation of end organs depended on growth of axons through the interrupted area of nerve. Therefore surgeons tried to reanastomose the stumps. Failures of reinnervation could not be blamed on lack of axoplasma metabolism and flow from cell body to suture line because the clinical observation of amputation neuromas and their constant recurrence demonstrated the unfailing delivery of axoplasma by the nerve cell body; at times to the deep concern of the surgeon, and the constant pain of the patient. The electron microscope sh…

Synthesis and magnetic properties of an iron 1,2-bisthienyl perfluorocyclopentene photochromic coordination compound

2011

Abstract The coordination compound Fe(BM-4-PTP) 2 (NCS) 2 ⋅2MeOH ( 1 ) including the photoisomerizable ligand BM-4-PTP (1,2-bis(2′-methyl-5′-(pyrid-4″-yl)thien-3′-yl)perfluorocyclopentene) was obtained as an orange powder. The powder turns blue upon photocyclization of the 1,2-bisthienyl photochromic ligand induced by UV light irradiation at room temperature. Photocycloreversion is obtained by visible light irradiation of the material in the solid state. The orange and blue powders were investigated over the temperature range (5–293 K) and pressure range (1 bar–12 kbar) by magnetic susceptibility measurements and variable temperature 57 Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy. The photo-induced colour ch…
