Levels in the interpretive optimisation of selectivity in high-performance liquid chromatography: a magical mystery tour.

Interpretive approaches for selectivity optimisation, which are those supported by retention models, are able to exploit efficiently the capabilities of the chromatographic system. The resolution of a mixture is usually faced in a first trial by looking for a unique experimental condition, able to resolve all compounds in the sample. If this is not possible, the problem can be outlined with less ambitious aims, focusing on only some compounds. In an extreme case, a single analyte can be individually optimised. Abstract The supercritical water gasification (SCWG) of glucose as a model compound for H 2 production is studied in term of process development at 25 MPa and 650 °C. Gasification has been investigated using a laboratory scale continuous plant comprising a continuous down flow reactor with a volume of 200 cm 3 , a heat recovery section and pre-heat of the biomass to simulate more closely an industrial design. A novel restricted access cation exchanger with sulphonic acid groups at the internal surface was proven to be highly suitable in the sample clean up of peptides on-line coupled to HPLC-electrospray ionization (ESI)-MS. Neuropeptide Y (NPY) and several of its fragments in plasma were subjected to the sample clean-up procedure. Development and validation of RP-HPLC method for the quantitative estimation of αs1-genetic variants in goat milk

A high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method was developed and validated for separation and quantification of the most common genetic variants of as1-casein in goat’s milk, to evaluate the effect of as1-casein polymorphisms on casein content. Chromatography was carried out by binary gradient technique on a reversed-phase C8 Zorbax column and the detection was made at a wavelength of 214 nm. The procedure was developed using individual raw milk samples of Girgentana goats. High-performance liquid chromatographic determination of Maillard compounds in store-brand and name-brand ultra-high-temperature-treated cows' milk.

Furosine and furfural products of the Maillard reaction are used as specific indicators of the effect of heating treatments on milk quality. Their contents were measured in representative samples of store- and name-brand ultra-high-temperature-treated milks using RP-HPLC with UV detection. Furosine contents ranged from 40.32 to 50.67 and from 65.48 to 310.58 mg/100 g protein in name- and store-brand milks, respectively. Of the furfurals, only hydroxymethylfurfural was detected. The free hydroxymethylfurfural contents of store-brand milks ranged from 0.22 to 1.70 mg/100 g protein. An automated on-line multidimensional HPLC system for protein and peptide mapping with integrated sample preparation.

A comprehensive on-line two-dimensional 2D-HPLC system with integrated sample preparation was developed for the analysis of proteins and peptides with a molecular weight below 20 kDa. The system setup provided fast separations and high resolving power and is considered to be a complementary technique to 2D gel electrophoresis in proteomics. The on-line system reproducibly resolved approximately 1000 peaks within the total analysis time of 96 min and avoided sample losses by off-line sample handling. Influence of brine concentration on swelling pressure of pork meat throughout salting.

Abstract The influence of sodium chloride on the water holding capacity of meat is well known and described in literature. An increase in water holding capacity is associated with an increase in the swelling pressure in the protein matrix. A novel device was used to measure the swelling pressure during brine salting of muscle cylinders (40 × 50 mm), in different NaCl brine concentrations (2.5 to 25%) over 6 days at 4 °C. CO2 conversion in a photocatalytic continuous membrane reactor

The reduction of CO2 with water by using photocatalysts is one of the most promising new methods for achieving CO2 conversion to valuable hydrocarbons such as methanol (MeOH). In this work, prepared TiO2-Nafion (TM)-based membranes were used in a photocatalytic membrane reactor, operated in continuous mode, for converting CO2 to methanol. By using the membrane with the best TiO2 distribution, a MeOH flow rate/TiO2 weight of 45 mu mol (g(catalyst) h)(-1) was measured when operating at 2 bar of feed pressure. Abstract A liquid chromatographic (LC) atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometric (MS) method is described for determining imidacloprid, carbendazim, methiocarb and hexythiazox in peaches and nectarines. The samples were extracted with ethyl acetate and anhydrous sodium sulfate. Recoveries yield for spiking samples were ranged from 64±9% (R.S.D) for carbendazim to 108±14% (R.S.D.) for hexythiazox at the concentration of 0.1 mg kg−1 (n=5). The correlation coefficients were greater than 0.998 over the range between 0.02 and 2 mg kg−1. The limits of quantitation (LOQ) were 0.02 mg kg−1 for all the pesticides. Moisture transfers inside food products could be controlled or limited by the use of edible films. These are usually based on hydrophobic substances such as lipids to improve barrier efficiency.
