Left ventricular diastolic and systolic function in normotensive obese subjects: influence of degree and duration of obesity.
1992
The present study was carried out to evaluate systolic and diastolic parameters in overweight and moderately obese, but otherwise healthy subjects, and in a lean control group, to determine whether degree and duration of obesity can influence left ventricular function. A total of 27 subjects, 17 overweight or with moderate obesity and 10 lean, healthy subjects were included. Patients were divided into three groups according to their body mass index (BMI) and to Garrow's criteria as follows: lean control group (BMI less than 25 kg.m-2); overweight subjects (BMI from 25 to 30 kg.m-2); moderately obese subjects (BMI greater than 30 less than 40 kg.m-2). Systolic and diastolic parameters were m…
Protective effect of N-acetylcysteine on ischaemia-induced myocardial damage in canine heart.
1991
The glutathione redox pathway is an important antioxidant system in the myocardium. N-Acetylcysteine is a low molecular weight glutathione precursor that has been used clinically to replenish glutathione stores. The present study was aimed at evaluating the protective effect of N-acetylcysteine on myocardial damage resulting from permanent coronary occlusion (without reperfusion) in anaesthetized dogs. N-Acetylcysteine (150 mg kg−1 i.v.) administered 2 min before occlusion rerduced infarct size in dogs subjected to 24 h ischemia. The infarct size as a percentage of the area at risk was 86.8 ± 3.6% (n = 11) in control (salinetreated) dogs and 68.2 ± 2.4% (n = 7; P < 0.05 vs control) in N-ace…
Effects of zinc acexamate on blood flow and prostanoid levels in the gastric mucosa of the rat
1989
The effects of the new antiulcer compound zinc acexamate on blood flow and prostanoid levels in the gastric mucosa have been studied. Zinc acexamate (30 and 300 mg/kg) dose-dependently prevents the reduction induced by the perfusion of noradrenaline (3.5 micrograms/kg.min, 30 min) in gastric mucosal blood flow, as measured by 3H-aniline clearance. Zinc acexamate pretreatment also increases the levels of prostaglandin E2 in the gastric mucosa of the rat, both under control conditions and after infusion with noradrenaline. The levels of thromboxane A2 and prostacyclin were not modified by zinc acexamate. These results confirm the importance of microcirculation in pathogenesis and the idea tha…
Environmental enrichment promotes neurogenesis and changes the extracellular concentrations of glutamate and GABA in the hippocampus of aged rats.
2005
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of environmental enrichment on the neurogenesis and the extracellular concentrations of glutamate and GABA in the hippocampus of freely moving young and aged rats. Male Wistar rats of 2 (young) and 25 (old) months of age were housed during 8 weeks in an enriched environment; control rats were kept in individual plastic cages during that same period of time. Rats were injected intraperitoneally with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU; 40 mg/kg; 7 days) during the fourth week of the housing period to detect neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus. Rats were sacrified 6 weeks after the last injection of BrdU. During the last we…
The neuroprotective effect of lactate is not due to improved glutamate uptake after controlled cortical impact in rats.
2012
For many years lactate was considered to be a waste product of glycolysis. Data are accumulating that suggest that lactate is an important energy substrate for neurons during activation. In severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) glutamate release and ischemic cerebral blood flow (CBF) are major factors for a mismatch between energy demand and supply and for neuronal cell death. Although ATP and behavior could be improved by lactate treatment after TBI, no histological correlate nor any linkage to better astrocytic glutamate uptake or CBF as possible mechanisms have been described. We subjected male rats to a controlled cortical impact (CCI; 5 m/sec, 2.5 mm). To study the effects of lactate tre…
Positional brain ischemia with MCA occlusion successfully treated with extra-intracranial bypass.
2010
408 Positional cerebral ischemia (PCI) is an extremely rare condition in which dramatic central nervous system deficits are triggered by standing in patients with severe stenosis or occlusion of the major brain-supplying blood vessels [1] . Because PCI is generally associated with orthostatic hypotension [2, 3] , a hemodynamic mechanism has been proposed [4] . However, PCI has been reported even in patients without orthostatic hypotension [1] . The treatment is medical, but surgery can be considered in refractory cases (endarterectomy for carotid artery stenosis or either highor low-flow extra-intracranial bypass – for carotid occlusion) [3] . We report a case of PCI associated with middle …
Comparative Study of the Efficacy of Olmesartan/Amlodipine vs. Perindopril/Amlodipine in Peripheral and Central Blood Pressure Parameters After Misse…
2016
Background Central aortic blood pressure (CBP) and CBP-derived parameters are independent predictors of cardiovascular risk. Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) or angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors plus calcium channel blockers are the recommended first-line treatments in hypertensive diabetic patients; however, the effect in reducing CBP when a dose is skipped has not been established yet. The aim was to determine whether the fixed-dose combination of olmesartan/amlodipine (OLM/AML) provides equal efficacy and safety as the perindopril/AML (PER/AML) combination in reducing CBP, augmentation index (AIx), and pulse wave velocity (PWV) when a drug dose is missed. Methods In this no…
Synergistic platelet antiaggregatory effects of the adenylate cyclase activator iloprost and the guanylate cyclase activating agent SIN-1 in vivo
1993
The aim of our study was to evaluate the platelet antiaggregatory and hemodynamic effects of the stable prostacyclin analog iloprost and the NO-donor SIN-1, an active metabolite of molsidomine. The number of circulating platelets was determined in anesthetized male Wistar rats as a measure of in vivo platelet aggregation. Platelet count decreased from 648 +/- 25 to 476 +/- 15 x 10(3) platelets/microliter and from 578 +/- 36 to 411 +/- 40 (mean +/- SEM) in response to two repetitive injections of collagen (70 micrograms/kg body weight). Treatment with SIN-1 bolus injections (0.3 or 1 mg/kg bw) and/or continuous i.v. infusion of iloprost (0.2 or 0.4 micrograms/kg bw/min) was initiated 15 min …
Correlation between hypertrophy and risk of hypertension in congenital solitary functioning kidney
2018
Purpose: Solitary functioning kidney (SFK) may be associated to hypertrophy, hypertension and chronic kidney disease. We evaluated blood pressure (BP) of children with congenital SFK comparing agenesis to multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) and correlated BP profiles with renal dimensions of affected and contralateral kidney. Methods: We compared 40 patients with MCDK, grouped for either treatment options (A: conservative vs B: nephrectomy) or involution time (A1: before 4 years-of-age vs A2: persistence-of-MCDK), to 10 unilateral agenesis (C). Patients were evaluated with ultrasound, scintigraphy, office-ambulatory BP monitoring. Results: Compensatory hypertrophy was demonstrated in most …
Prognostic implications of pericardial effusion in acute heart failure: Does size matter?
2015
Somedegreeofpericardialeffusion(PE)occurredinupto20%ofpa-tientswithheartfailure(HF)[1].Arecentstudyshowedthatinpatientswithchronicheartfailure(CHF),evenahemodynamicallyirrelevantPEwasassociated withincreasedriskofadverseevents [2,3]. Should thesefindings be extrapolated to patients with AHF? Moreover, the patho-physiology of such association remains to be determined. Thus, thisstudy sought to evaluate the association between PE and the risk of 1-year mortality in patients with AHF.Weincluded1827consecutivepatientsadmittedforAHFintheCar-diology department of a tertiary university hospital from January 2004to July 2013. Patients with a hemodynamically compromised PE wereexcluded (n = 16). In a…
