RpeakChrom: Novel R package for the automated characterization and optimization of column efficiency in high-performance liquid chromatography analys…

2017

Characterization of chromatographic columns using the traditional van Deemter method is limited by the necessity of calculating extra-column variance, issue particularly relevant when modeling asymmetrical peaks eluted from monolithic columns. A novel R package that implements Parabolic Variance Modified Gaussian approach for accurate peak modeling, van Deemter equation and two alternatives approaches, based on van Deemter, has been developed to calculate the height equivalent to a theoretical plate (HETP). To assess package capabilities conventional packed reverse-phase and monolithic HPLC columns were characterized. Peaks eluted from the monolithic column showed a high value of factor asy…

The direct effect of magnetic tape ® on pain and lower-extremity blood flow in subjects with low-back pain: A randomized clinical trial

2021

Low-back pain has a high impact on the world population, and solutions are in demand. The behavior of specific physiological processes has been modified using magnetic fields, whether for pain relief, bone consolidation, or improvement of vascularization. The use of tape with magnetic properties could help in these cases. A double-blind randomized clinical trial was designed to use Magnetic Tape® versus placebo Kinesio tape. Blood flow variables were evaluated using pulsed power Doppler ultrasound. Resistance index, pulsatility index, systolic velocity, and diastolic velocity were measured. The pressure pain threshold was measured using algometry in 22 subjects. The results reveal significa…

Detecting human impacts: non-pollen palynomorphs as proxies for human impact on the environment

2021

International audience; Abstract Non-pollen palynomorphs (NPPs) are widely used to detect human activities, in addition to the anthropogenic indicators used in palynology. This paper first tries to determine the best way to approach most probable number (MPN) counting for young scientists. It then looks at the anthropogenic indicators and the different types of human activity that can reveal the studied taxa. Among the different fungal spores, coprophilous fungi are very useful to evidence pastoral activities and grazing pressure. Numerous taxa related to dung are also indicators of decaying organic matter and deserve our attention. Erosion processes due to human activities increase the rep…

Prehistoric land use at an archaeological hot-spot (the rock art park of Campo Lameiro, NW Spain) inferred from charcoal, synanthropic pollen and non…

2013

Pollen, non-pollen palynomorphs and charcoal from a colluvial soil surrounded by prehistoric petroglyphs (Campo Lameiro, NW Spain) were studied in order to assess the nature of human activities and their impact on Holocene vegetation patterns. Several phases of anthropogenic impact were observed. (i) Between 7.6 and 6.5 ka cal BP, synanthropic taxa (Urtica dioica type, Plantago lanceolata type) and coprophilous fungi (e.g. Sporormiella-type) are indicative of early (pre-agricultural) creation of small patches of pasture using fire, possibly for incipient animal husbandry or as part of a deliberate strategy to improve game availability. Such activities only had a minor effect on the deciduou…

Pyrolysis-GC-MS and CuO-oxidation-HPLC in the characterization of HMMs from sediments and surface waters downstream of a pulp mill

1998

Abstract High molecular mass fractions of lignin and humic compounds in sediments and waters downstream of a pulp mill were characterized applying pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results were compared to those obtained using reversed phase HPLC on the cupric oxide oxidation products. The chromatographic data of both pyrolysis and cupric oxide oxidation were also subjected to the principal component analysis (PCA). The sediment samples and fractions obtained by ultrafiltration of river water samples were freeze dried prior to characterization. The sediment samples were also extracted using 2 M sodium hydroxide solution. The extracts were ultrafiltrated, freeze dried and c…

Ahmed valve, suture-less implantation: A new approach to an easier technique.

2013

Purpose Tissue adhesives have been used in ophthalmology instead of sutures to minimize the operating time. This case series investigated the effectiveness and safety of use of cyanoacrylate in Ahmed valve implantation through pars plana for refractory glaucoma. Patients and methods Seventeen eyes of 17 patients with refractory glaucoma underwent Ahmed valve scleral suture-less implantation through pars plana with a cyanoacrylate suture of the plate. Refractory glaucoma was defined as intraocular pressure (IOP) ≥ 21 mm Hg with antiglaucoma eye drops, good adherence to treatment, and no previous glaucoma surgery. IOP control and development of complications were evaluated during the follow-u…

Effect of high hydrostatic pressure (HPP) and pulsed electric field (PEF) technologies on reduction of aflatoxins in fruit juices

2021

Abstract The high demand of fresh-like products to meet the fruits and vegetables serving encouraged the implementation of non-thermal food processing techniques, such as high pressure processing (HPP) and pulsed electric fields (PEF), with low impact on nutritional components. The aim of the present work is to evaluate the application of HPP and PEF techniques as useful decontamination tool for aflatoxins (AFs) reduction in grape juice. Spiked grape juice samples with AFs treated by PEF or HPP were extracted using dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) and determined by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS-IT). Reduction percentages of 14–29% have b…

Application of HPP in food fermentation processes

2020

Abstract High pressure processing (HPP) is widely used in the food industry for nonthermal pasteurization of juices, ready-to-eat meals, dairy products, pet food, etc. The pasteurization effect is induced by damaging the membranes of microorganisms (leading to cell lysis) as well as by protein denaturation, thus interrupting cellular functions such as nutrient uptake, DNA replication, etc. Nevertheless, as a thermodynamic variable, pressure can also be used to enhance the fermentative processes if applied at sublethal levels (up to 50/60 MPa) to induce metabolic shifts in microorganisms, This allows accelerating the fermentative processes or even obtaining different compounds resulting from…
