Pressure induced insulator/half-metal/metal transition in a strongly correlatedp-electron system

Mixed-valent Rb${}_{4}$O${}_{6}$ provides an exceptional prototype material for studying the interplay between local correlations (Hubbard $U$) and electron kinetic energy ($W$) in the open $sp$-electron shell. Based on a first-principles calculation we show that depending on $U/W$ ratio, when tuned by external pressure, Rb${}_{4}$O${}_{6}$ exhibits a surprising sequence of phase transitions between strongly correlated antiferromagnetic insulator, ferromagnetic insulator ($U/W\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\gg}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}1$), moderately correlated ferromagnetic half-metal ($U/W\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\sim}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}1$), and fin…

Structural and vibrational study of Bi2Se3under high pressure

The structural and vibrational properties of bismuth selenide (Bi${}_{2}$Se${}_{3}$) have been studied by means of x-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements up to 20 and 30 GPa, respectively. The measurements have been complemented with ab initio total-energy and lattice dynamics calculations. Our experimental results evidence a phase transition from the low-pressure rhombohedral ($R$-3$m$) phase (\ensuremath{\alpha}-Bi${}_{2}$Se${}_{3}$) with sixfold coordination for Bi to a monoclinic $C$2/$m$ structure (\ensuremath{\beta}-Bi${}_{2}$Se${}_{3}$) with sevenfold coordination for Bi above 10 GPa. Vibrational properties of delafossiteCuGaO2at ambient and high pressures

In this paper we investigate the vibrational properties of $\mathrm{Cu}\mathrm{Ga}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ delafossite by means of Raman experiments and ab initio calculations. Both investigations have been performed at ambient pressure and also at high pressure. Effects of pressure and temperature on the dielectric constant of GaS, GaSe, and InSe:  Role of the electronic contribution

In this work we report on direct measurements of the temperature and pressure dependences of the low-frequency dielectric constant along c axis $({\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{\ensuremath{\parallel}})$ of GaS, GaSe, and InSe. The temperature dependence of both the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indexes is also presented. A large increase of ${\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{\ensuremath{\parallel}}$ under pressure has been observed. In the framework of a rigid ion model, the lattice contribution to ${\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{\ensuremath{\parallel}}$ is shown to increase slightly under pressure, due to the change of the angle between the anion-cation bond and the layer plane. Inversion symmetric vs. asymmetric excitations and the low-temperature universal properties of Ar:N 2 and Ar:N 2 :CO glasses

The bias energies of various two-level systems (TLSs) and their strengths of interactions with the strain are calculated for Ar:N2 glass. Unlike the case in KBr:CN, a distinct class of TLSs having weak interaction with the strain and untypically small bias energies is not found. The addition of CO molecules introduces CO flips which form such a class of weakly interacting TLSs, albeit at much lower coupling than that at which they are typically observed in solids. We conclude that because of the absence of a distinct class of weakly interacting TLSs, Ar:N2 is a non-universal glass, the first such system in three dimensions and in ambient pressure. Resonant three-photon ionization spectroscopy of atomic Fe

Laser spectroscopic investigations on high-lying states around the ionization potential (IP) in the atomic spectrum of Fe have been carried out for the development of a practical three-step resonance ionization scheme accessible by Ti: sapphire lasers. A hot cavity laser ion source, typically used at on-line radioactive ion beam production facilities, was employed in this work. Ionization schemes employing high-lying Rydberg and autoionizing states populated by three-photon excitations were established. Five new Rydberg and autoionizing Rydberg series converging to the ground and to the first four excited states of Fe II are reported. Analyses of the Rydberg series yield the value 63 737.68…

Photon Pressure Force on Space Debris TOPEX/Poseidon Measured by Satellite Laser Ranging

The TOPEX/Poseidon (T/P) altimetry mission operated for 13 years before the satellite was decommissioned in January 2006, becoming a large space debris object at an altitude of 1,340 km. Since the end of the mission, the interaction of T/P with the space environment has driven the satellite's spin dynamics. Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) measurements collected from June 2014 until October 2016 allow for the satellite spin axis orientation to be determined with an accuracy of 1.7°. The spin axis coincides with the platform yaw axis (formerly pointing in the nadir direction) about which the body rotates in a counterclockwise direction. Observation of two-XUV-photon ionization using harmonic generation from a short, intense laser pulse

We report the observation of a two-photon ionization process in the XUV wavelength regime. In a near-resonant 1 + 1 ionization scheme, Ar atoms are ionized absorbing the 15 eV third harmonic photons produced in a gas jet by the 0.5 ps intense laser pulses of a KrF excimer laser emitting at 248.6 nm. The present demonstration of a non-linear process in the XUV regime reveals feasibility of high-intensity applications utilizing the uniquely high peak power of non-conventional short wavelength radiation sources based on harmonic generation.

A multiscale approach to liquid flows in pipes I: The single pipe

Abstract In the present paper we study the propagation of pressure waves in a barotropic flow through a pipe, with a possibly varying cross-sectional area. The basic model is the Saint–Venant system. We derive two multiscale models for the cases of weak and strong damping, respectively, which describe the time evolution of the piezometric head and the velocity. If the damping is weak, then the corresponding first-order hyperbolic system is linear but contains an additional integro-differential equation that takes into account the damping. :  In general, a strain gauge embedded in a model is subjected to a stress normal to the grid, whereas a gauge on the external surface is free from such a stress. This paper concerns the effect of the stress normal to the grid on the output of the strain gauge; usually, the influence of such a stress has a negligible effect, however, in some cases a notable influence has been noted. Therefore, the output of the strain gauge is determined in function of the strains in the plane of the gauge, ɛl and ɛt, and of the stress, σn, normal to the grid.
