Drift of ferrocolloids through a cylindrical grid by magnetic force

The subject of the paper is to investigate the coupling phenomena of magnetic and non-uniform temperature fields in ferrofluids. The coupling creates a special kind of mass transfer and an inhomogeneous concentration of ferrofluid arises especially near bodies, where higher field gradients are present. Particular attention is paid to the oriented mass transfer, i.e. the magnitude and direction of ferrofluid flux with respect to the temperature gradient and magnetic field. Quantitatively, oriented phoretic transport can be characterized by the magnetic Soret coefficient and osmotic pressure difference. Temperature and pressure dependence of the viscosities of perfluoropolyether fluids

The viscosities of two structurally different perfluoropolyether fluids were determined at a series of temperatures and pressures, from 25 to 100°C and from 1 to 1000 bars. Flow activation energies and volumes as well as their temperature and pressure coefficients were derived. An attempt was made to relate measured and derived quantities to the compound structures.

Bubble motion through non-crimp fabrics during composites manufacturing

Bubbles motion through interbundle channels in biaxial non-crimp fabrics is modelled. The scenario is that formed bubbles move with the resin through these channels and are trapped if the channels become too narrow. By usage of a permeability network model, existing criteria on bubble deformation and a variety of analytical and probabilistic methods it is found that the paths of the bubbles depend significantly on the position of the threads keeping the fabric together and the number of fibres crossing the interbundle channels. Regulation of aerobic and anaerobic D-malate metabolism of Escherichia coli by the LysR-type regulator DmlR (YeaT).

ABSTRACT Escherichia coli K-12 is able to grow under aerobic conditions on d -malate using DctA for d -malate uptake and the d -malate dehydrogenase DmlA (formerly YeaU) for converting d -malate to pyruvate. Induction of dmlA encoding DmlA required an intact dmlR (formerly yeaT ) gene, which encodes DmlR, a LysR-type transcriptional regulator. Induction of dmlA by DmlR required the presence of d -malate or l - or meso -tartrate, but only d -malate supported aerobic growth. Collision with and avoidance of obstacles by blind cave fish Anoptichthys jordani (Characidae).

Blind Mexican cave fish (Anoptichthys jordani) were released into unknown surroundings and their swimming tracks were recorded. During the first 24 h in a new tank, i.e., in unfamiliar environments, the average swimming velocity of the fish was higher than during the remaining time in the tank. Collision with obstacles was recorded by an electrical contact detection method. Single frame analysis of video-recordings revealed that collision can be correlated with tail movements when the fish is close to an obstacle, whereas avoidance correlates with gliding during approach to an obstacle. Separation by FPLC chromatofocusing of UDP-glucosyltransferases from three developmental stages of Drosophila melanogaster.

Variation of UDP-glucosyltransferase activity, during Drosophila melanogaster development, was analyzed. The endogenous metabolite xanthurenic acid and the xenobiotic compounds 1-naphthol and 2-naphthol were used as substrates. Developmentally regulated differences were observed for the three substrates, suggesting the presence of UDP-glucosyltransferase isoenzymes. This was further confirmed by FPLC chromatofocusing on a Mono P column: seven peaks of UDP-glucosyltransferase activity (pHs: ≥6.3, 5.8, 5.5, 4.9, 4.5, 4.2, ≤4.0) with either single or overlapping substrate specificity were detected.
