Low Urethral Pressure Profile - Clinical Implications
2001
The clinical impact of urethral pressure profilometry (UPP) has been a main urological topic over the past three decades. Exaggareted expectations and differing techniques with incongruent results caused a controversial appearance. However, since the UPP is the only method to measure directly aspects of the urethral closure function, all types of sphincteric urinary incontinence represent indications for this measurement. Based on long-term experience this paper aims to discuss the various complexes regarding the urethral pressure profilometry. The significance of the urethral closure function for urinary continence and the urodynamic relevance of active and passive pressure transmission ar…
Strength and strain enhancements of concrete columns confined with FRP sheets
2004
The compressive behavior up to failure of short concrete members reinforced with fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) is investigated. Rectangular cross-sections are analysed by means of a simplified elastic model, able also to explain stress-concentration. The model allows one to evaluate the equivalent uniform confining pressure in ultimate conditions referred to the effective confined cross-section and to the effective stresses in FRP along the sides of section; consequently, it makes it possible to determine ultimate strain and the related bearing capacity of the confined member corresponding to FRP failure. The effect of local reinforcements constitute by single strips applied at corners bef…
Study of low-pressure suspension plasma spray nanostructured coating : structural characteristics and application in solid oxide fuel cell
2021
Suspension plasma spraying (SPS) has attracted more and more attention in terms of the preparation of nanostructured / sub-microstructured ceramic coatings. However, conventional SPS techniques are conducted under atmospheric pressure, which inevitably causes some disadvantages. Recently, a novel suspension spraying technology – low-pressure suspension plasma spraying (LPSPS) – was proposed, in which the sus-pension spraying process is conducted under low environmental pressure. Benefit from the significant impact of low pressure on the coating deposition, LPSPS is expected to improve the disadvantage of SPS as well as to obtain distinct coating structures not achievable in conventional SPS…
High-pressure studies of topological insulators Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3, and Sb2Te3
2013
Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3, and Sb2Te3 are narrow bandgap semiconductors with tetradymite crystal structure (R-3m) which have been extensively studied along with their alloys due to their promising operation as thermoelectric materials in the temperature range between 300 and 500¿K. Studies on these layered semiconductors have increased tremendously in the last years since they have been recently predicted and demonstrated to behave as 3D topological insulators. In particular, a number of high-pressure studies have been done in the recent years in these materials. In this work we summarize the main results of the high-pressure studies performed in this family of semiconductors to date. In particular, w…
Stylolite interfaces and surrounding matrix material: Nature and role of heterogeneities in roughness and microstructural development
2010
Rough pressure solution interfaces, like stylolites, are one of the most evident features of localized slow deformation in rocks of the upper crust. There is a general consensus that the development of these rough structures is a result of localized, stress enhanced, dissolution of material along a fluid filled interface, but little is known on the initiation of this roughness. The aim of this article is to reveal the role of heterogeneities initially present in the host-rock on roughness initiation. This should give insights on whether stylolite roughness is generated by a stress-induced instability or by the presence of disorder in the material (i.e. quenched noise). We use a microstructu…
Treatments for intracranial hypertension in acute brain-injured patients: grading, timing, and association with outcome. Data from the SYNAPSE-ICU st…
2023
Purpose: Uncertainties remain about the safety and efficacy of therapies for managing intracranial hypertension in acute brain injured (ABI) patients. This study aims to describe the therapeutical approaches used in ABI, with/without intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring, among different pathologies and across different countries, and their association with six months mortality and neurological outcome. Methods: A preplanned subanalysis of the SYNAPSE-ICU study, a multicentre, prospective, international, observational cohort study, describing the ICP treatment, graded according to Therapy Intensity Level (TIL) scale, in patients with ABI during the first week of intensive care unit (ICU) a…
Changes in the cerebrovascular effects of endothelin-1 and nicardipine after experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage.
1993
The role of endothelium-related factors in the pathogenesis of cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) has gained interest since the discovery of endothelin-1 (ET-1). We have examined, before and after SAH, the responsiveness of the cerebrovascular bed of the goat to ET-1, the sources of Ca2+ in ET-1-induced responses, and the ability of the Ca2+ entry blocker nicardipine to counteract them. Before SAH, injection of ET-1 into the cerebral circulation increased cerebrovascular resistance, thereby producing dose-dependent reductions in cerebral blood flow (CBF), which were prevented by nicardipine. In isolated middle cerebral arteries, ET-1 induced concentration-dependent contr…
Use of middle cerebral velocity and blood pressure for the analysis of cerebral autoregulation at various frequencies: The coherence index
1998
A common component in many protocols for the evaluation of cerebral autoregulation is the comparison of transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) velocities with blood pressure recordings, in which correlations between these two signals correspond to impaired autoregulation. With long data sets and complicated paradigms, however, visual inspection alone cannot adequately distinguish random coincidence from consistent correlation in a statistically valid fashion. We suggest and illustrate the use of the coherence index for this purpose. To illustrate this technique, long-term recordings of TCD velocity and blood pressure were obtained from 6 normal subjects and using 23 data segments from 8 pati…
Enfisema subcutáneo durante tratamiento restaurador: caso clínico
2006
Subcutaneous emphysema is a relatively rare complication of dental treatment, although increasingly due to the us…
Thermobarometric constraints on pressure variations across the Plattengneiss shear zone of the Eastern Alps: implications for exhumation models durin…
2014
Forward and inverse mineral equilibria modelling of metapelitic rocks in the hangingwall and footwall of the Plattengneiss, a major shear zone in the Eastern Alps, is used to constrain their tectonometamorphic evolution and assess models for their exhumation. Forward (pseudosection) modelling of two metapelitic rocks suggests a steep clockwise P–T path with a near-isothermal decompression segment from a pressure peak at ~18–19 kbar and 670 °C to the metamorphic peak at 680–720 °C and 11–13 kbar. A subsequent decrease to 600–645 °C and 8–9 kbar is inferred from the late growth of staurolite in some samples. Conventional thermobarometric calculations (inverse modelling) on 18 samples with the…
