Modeling of PAH elimination by adiabatic steam stripping and intraparticle desorption
2003
The decontamination process of solids loaded with PAH in a pilot plant is modeled. This process is separated into two main stages: fast steam stripping at the entrance of the separation tube and the subsequent slow desorption of PAH from the interior of the soil particles. The stripping process also occurs in two stages: fast diffusion controlled saturation of the partial pressures followed by the heat transfer controlled evaporation. The phase diagram of PAH/water is constructed using both the microscopic model and empirical relationships for systems with wide miscibility gaps. The numerical basis for the calculations describing desorption from the soil particles is discussed. The model fo…
Liquid metal free surface dynamics in rotating permanent magnet stirrer
2020
Abstract We study liquid metal stirring by rotating permanent magnets in a laboratory-scale rectangular glass container. The main goal is numerical model validation using experimental free surface shape data. We find reasonable agreement between the experiments and coupled liquid metal magnetohydrodynamics simulations. Since the surface tension forces are not dominant here, free surface is deformed mainly by the dynamic pressure of the bulk flow. Therefore, we can conclude that not only the free surface profile is similar to experiments, but the bulk flow must be also very similar.

Spherically averaged versus angle-dependent interactions in quadrupolar fluids
2008
Employing simplified models in computer simulation is on the one hand often enforced by computer time limitations but on the other hand it offers insights into the molecular properties determining a given physical phenomenon. We employ this strategy to the determination of the phase behaviour of quadrupolar fluids, where we study the influence of omitting angular degrees of freedom of molecules via an effective spherically symmetric potential obtained from a perturbative expansion. Comparing the liquid-vapor coexistence curve, vapor pressure at coexistence, interfacial tension between the coexisting phases, etc., as obtained from both the models with the full quadrupolar interactions and th…
Assessment of particle suspension conditions in stirred vessels by means of pressure gauge technique
2002
In this work the quantitative assessment of the mass of suspended solid particles in stirred vessels is performed using the Pressure Gauge Technique. This is based on the measurements of the pressure increase on the tank bottom due to the presence of suspended solid particles at any agitation speed. The method has the advantages of not utilising visual observations and of easy and inexpensive application to both laboratory and industrial equipment. Very few data are available in literature and the experimental results collected using the present PGT technique and the correlations here proposed are of considerable academic and industrial interest.
Quantification of Lung Volume at Different Tidal Volumes and Positive End-Expiratory Pressures in a Porcine Model by Using Retrospective Respiratory …
2008
PURPOSE: This feasibility study in healthy animals should prove the concept that it is possible to quantitatively assess the effects of different ventilatory settings on the lung parenchyma during ongoing ventilation in respiratory gated 4-dimensional (D)-computed tomography (CT). For this purpose, the influence of different tidal volumes and positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) on quantitative assessment of lung volumes (LVs) and lung compartments was analyzed. METHODS: Five anesthetized and ventilated (20 breaths/min, inspiratory/expiratory ratio of 1:2) healthy pigs underwent 16-row multidetector CT with retrospective respiratory gating using a noncontact charge-coupled device camera …
Embryo culture: can we perform better than nature?
2010
Culture of preimplantation-stage embryos has always been a key element of laboratory embryology and has contributed substantially to the success of many assisted reproduction procedures. During the past decade, its importance has increased as extended in-vitro embryo culture and single blastocyst transfer have become indispensable parts of the approach to decreasing the chance of multiple pregnancy while preserving the overall efficiency of the treatment. However, in spite of the scientific and commercial challenge stimulating research worldwide to optimize embryo culture conditions, a consensus is missing even in the basic principles, including composition and exchange of media, the requir…
Performance of EasyBreath® Decathlon Snorkeling mask for Delivering Continuous Positive Airway Pressure
2020
ABSTRACTBackgroundDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for noninvasive respiratory support devices has dramatically increased, sometimes exceeding hospital capacity. The full-face Decathlon snorkeling mask, EasyBreath® (EB® mask), has been adapted to deliver continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) as an emergency respiratory interface. We aimed to assess the performance of this modified EB® mask.MethodsCPAP set at 5, 10, and 15 cmH2O was delivered to 10 healthy volunteers with a high-flow system generator set at 40, 80, and 120 L min-1 and with a turbine-driven ventilator during both spontaneous and loaded (resistor) breathing. Inspiratory CO2 partial pressure (PiCO2), pressure inside …
Seven Mathematical Models of Hemorrhagic Shock
2021
Although mathematical modelling of pressure-flow dynamics in the cardiocirculatory system has a lengthy history, readily finding the appropriate model for the experimental situation at hand is often a challenge in and of itself. An ideal model would be relatively easy to use and reliable, besides being ethically acceptable. Furthermore, it would address the pathogenic features of the cardiovascular disease that one seeks to investigate. No universally valid model has been identified, even though a host of models have been developed. The object of this review is to describe several of the most relevant mathematical models of the cardiovascular system: the physiological features of circulator…
