The borrowing of English words in contemporary Romanian is a phenomenon which has fuelled a considerable amount of public debate, sometimes being described as an invasion and a threat to the language. In this context, the analysis of those factors that promote inter-language transfers in general can help us understand the mechanisms of this complex process, and encourage a more realistic and objective attitude towards it. The present paper reviews some of the most important contributions on the topic to date, describing the most important factors that promote borrowing, both in isolation and in relation to each other.

Abstract In reversed-phase liquid chromatography, the performance for basic compounds is affected by the interaction of the protonated (cationic) species with the anionic free silanols on the alkyl-bonded stationary phases. Using aqueous-organic mobile phases in the absence of additives, the retention may be too high, and the peaks be broad and asymmetric. BACKGROUND The EasyTube (EzT) is a supraglottic airway device that is used for emergency airway situations. Ventilation during general anesthesia should also be feasible, but literature on the EzT is scarce. We evaluated the EzT in comparison with the endotracheal tube (ETT) in its use during general anesthesia in a comparative study. METHODS A total of 400 patients with American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status I to II scheduled for minor surgery in 4 centers were randomized for ventilation via the ETT or EzT. Refractive indices and refractive index increments of the system polystyrene/trans-decalin were measured under pressures up to 500 bar and at temperatures between 20 and 60°C. The measurements were performed with a new, recently designed interferometer. The results demonstrate a sufficient agreement of the refractive index values measured at different temperatures and pressures with the equations of Eykman and Gladstone-Dale whereas the Lorenz-Lorentz equation indicates larger deviations. Blood Flow, Vascular Resistance and Oxygen Availability in Malignant Tumours upon Intravenous Flunarizine

Tumour blood flow, an important determinant of the efficacy of presently available nonsurgical cancer treatments, significantly increased following a single I.V. injection of the calcium antagonist flunarizine. At a dose of 1 mg/kg, tumour blood flow increased approximately by 28% without a significant change in mean arterial blood pressure. The flow increase was paralleled by a similar improvement of the O2 availability to the cancer cells. The data suggest that flunarizine may provide a means of improving delivery of antineoplastic agents to tumours. Furthermore, flunarizine may also enhance the effectiveness of irradiation by increasing tumour oxygenation.
Refractive index of GaTe under high pressure

In this paper we describe two experiments, in the near- and mid-infrared, designed to investigate the evolution under pressure of the GaTe refractive index for polarization parallel and perpendicular to the crystallographic c-axis (in the layer plane). The refractive index dispersion for both light polarizations has been determined up to 5.5 GPa. It is found that the refractive index increases faster in the direction perpendicular to the c-axis than along the c-axis. To find out the origin of such a difference we used a Phillips-Van Vechten model and arrived at the conclusion that it is due to the different pressure behaviour of the Penn gap for each polarization.
