Increase in physical activity and cardiometabolic risk profile change during lifestyle intervention in primary healthcare: 1-year follow-up study amo…

2011

Objectives To investigate the association between increase in physical activity and changes in cardiometabolic risk factors during a lifestyle intervention programme in routine clinical settings. Design Prospective follow-up. Setting 400 primary healthcare centres and occupational healthcare outpatient clinics in Finland. Participants Individuals at high risk for type 2 diabetes identified in the implementation project of the national diabetes prevention programme (FIN-D2D) and participating in baseline and 1-year follow-up visits. Final study group comprised the 1871 non-diabetic participants who responded at follow-up visit to a question on stability versus increase of physical activity. …

Association of a single nucleotide polymorphism of RANK gene with blood pressure in Spanish women

2020

Abstract In addition to governing key functions in bone metabolism and the immune system, the RANK/RANKL/OPG system plays a role in the vascular system, particularly in vascular calcification and atherosclerosis. Given that these 2 phenotypes are considered a major cause of high blood pressure (BP), in this study we analyzed the association of SNPs in RANK and OPG genes with blood pressure. An observational study was conducted of 2 SNPs in the RANK gene (rs884205 and rs78326403) and 1 in the OPG gene (rs4876869) with systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in a cohort of 695 women. Data analysis revealed a statistically significant association between the SNP rs884205 and BP press…

0326: Prognostic factors and impact of blood pressure level during the first 48 hours after myocardial infarction

2016

Background High blood pressure and low blood pressure are perfectly identified cardio-vascular risk factors, especially in primary prevention. However, their respective role after myocardial infarction is uncertain, with few data available. Objectives To compare cardio-vascular deaths and events after myocardial infarction between the different blood pressure levels observed during the first forty-eight hours. Methods We carried out an observational, prospective, monocentric study, including all consecutive patients admitted in Dijon’s Cardiologic Intensive Care Unit for myocardial infarction, between February 2012 and February 2014. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) was defined as the average …

Management of high blood pressure in children and adolescents: recommendations of the European Society of Hypertension.

2009

Hypertension in children and adolescents has been gaining ground in cardiovascular medicine, mainly due to the advances made in several areas of pathophysiological and clinical research. These guidelines arose from the consensus reached by specialists in the detection and control of hypertension in children and adolescents. Furthermore, these guidelines are a compendium of scientific data and the extensive clinical experience it contains represents the most complete information that doctors, nurses and families should take into account when making decisions. These guidelines, which stress the importance of hypertension in children and adolescents, and its contribution to the current epidemi…

Cognitive demands impair postural control in developmental dyslexia: A negative effect that can be compensated

2009

Children with developmental dyslexia exhibit delayed reading abilities and various sensori-motor deficits. The way these various symptoms interact remain poorly understood. The objective of this study was twofold. First, we aimed to investigate whether postural control was impaired in dyslexic children when cognitive demands are increased. Second, we checked whether this effect could be reduced significantly by a treatment aiming to recalibrate ocular proprioception. Twelve dyslexic and fifteen treated dyslexic children (>3 months of treatment) were compared with twelve non-dyslexic children in two conditions (mean age: 11.6 ± 2.1, 12.5 ± 1.5 and 10.6 ± 1.7 years respectively). In a first c…

Management of Blood Pressure and Heart Rate in Patients with Acute Stroke

2017

BACKGROUND: Stroke represent one of the most devastating of all neurological diseases, affecting about 15 million people per year and is an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and currently the leading cause of adult disability in developed countries. Blood pressure and heart rate may undergo several modifications in patients with both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke in fact raised blood pressure levels may lead to cerebral edema, hematoma expansion or hemorrhagic transformation and in contrast low blood pressure can lead to increased cerebral infarction or perihematomal ischemia. In addition, ECG abnormalities and cardiac arrhythmias, especially atrial fibrillation, are re…

Cardiovascular effects of nocturnal aircraft noise on healthy volunteers

2013

Background: Nighttime aircraft noise can impair sleep quality and may also increase blood pressure and the risk for myocardial infarction for persons in highly noise exposed residential areas. Pathophysiology and possible susceptibility factors for cardiovascular effects of aircraft noise remain unclear. Methods and results: 75 healthy volunteers (mean age 26 y) were studied for three nights in their homes. One control pattern without noise (Control) and two noise patterns with 30 (Noise 30) or 60 (Noise 60) aircraft noise events were played back in random and blinded order. After each study night flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) of the brachial artery was measured the following the morning. …
