Release of [3H]acetylcholine from the isolated rat or guinea-pig trachea evoked by preganglionic nerve stimulation; a comparison with transmural stim…

1991

Basal and stimulated outflow of radioactive acetylcholine, phosphorylcholine and choline from rat and guinea-pig isolated tracheae were measured by reverse phase HPLC followed by liquid-scintillation-spectrometry. Tracheae were stimulated either by an electrical field (transmural stimulation) or by a local stimulation of the innervating parasympathetic nerves (preganglionic stimulation). Epithelium was removed in most experiments, as the epithelium inhibits acetylcholine release. The basal tritium efflux (1,600 dpm/3min) from rat isolated tracheae incubated with [3H]choline consisted of 56% [3H]phosphorylcholine and 38% [3H]choline. Preganglionic stimulation (15 Hz, 1,200 pulses) caused a 2…

Positive airway pressure (PAP) treatment reduces glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in obstructive sleep apnea patients with concomitant weight loss …

2021

Abstract: Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are at increased risk of developing metabolic disease such as diabetes. The effects of positive airway pressure on glycemic control are contradictory. We therefore evaluated the change in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in a large cohort of OSA patients after long-term treatment with positive airway pressure. HbA1c levels were assessed in a subsample of the European Sleep Apnea Database [n=1608] at baseline and at long-term follow up with positive airway pressure therapy (mean 378.9 +/- 423.0 days). In a regression analysis, treatment response was controlled for important confounders. Overall, HbA1c decreased from 5.98 +/- 1.01% to 5.93 +/- …

Influence of exclusive resistance training on body composition and cardiovascular risk factors in overweight or obese children: a systematic review.

2011

Objective: Since the last decade, a significant increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity among children has been reported. Low aerobic fitness and a low compliance with endurance sports in such children are theoretical reasons to favor the use of resistance training in intervention studies, even though positive effects of resistance training on morbidity without accompanying dietary modifications are a matter of debate. In this review we summarize the studies that have shown the isolated effect of resistance training on body composition and cardiovascular risk factors in overweight and obese children. Method: <…

Blood pressure variability and cardiovascular risk in 9 eastern european countries: data from the BP-Care study

2015

Methods: Total 327 patients were enrolled from 2008 to 2011 in the Korean registry program. They met the criteria of PAH and we investigated the clinical data, the medication prescribed and survival status et al. Results: Their mean age was 40.8 15.8years with female /male patient ratio of 2.7:1. The patients in WHO I/II were 32.4% and WHO III/IV were 67.6%. The peak/mean pulmonary arterial pressure was 86.3/ 56.6 mmHg. Idiopathic PAH (22%), connective tissue disease (24%) and congenital heart disease (46%) were predominant. Small number of patients with familial PAH, portal hypertension, HIV infection, pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis (PCH) existed. The patients described bosentan were …

Intra- and inter-foot coordination in quiet standing: footwear and posture effects.

2012

Intra-foot coordination between center of pressure (COP) of the ball and heel of the foot in single leg standing and inter-foot coordination of the right and left foot during bipedal stance was examined as a function of postural stance (two legs, one leg, and toe postures), footwear (barefoot, different area based high heel shoes) and postural training (ballet group and regular exercising group). Young adult females performed three 20s trials in each postural condition. In general, the traditional variability measures of COPnet motion increased under the less stable postural support conditions and ballet dancers had better balance in single leg standing. Regularity analysis revealed a negat…

Differential impact of syncope on the prognosis of patients with acute pulmonary embolism: a systematic review and meta-analysis

2018

Aims Controversial reports exist in the literature regarding the prognostic role and therapeutic implications of syncope in patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE). We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the association between syncope and short-term adverse outcomes, taking into account the presence or absence of haemodynamic compromise at acute PE presentation. Methods and results The literature search identified 1664 studies, 29 of which were included for a total of 21 956 patients with PE (n = 3706 with syncope). Syncope was associated with higher prevalence of haemodynamic instability [odds ratio (OR) 3.50; 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.67-4.58], as well…

Wine, Diet, and Arterial Hypertension

2007

Hypertension is one of the leading causes of death in developed countries, and the number of prehypertensive patients is increasing. The beneficial effects of moderate wine consumption on cardiovascular diseases have been demonstrated, along with the healthy influence of a Mediterranean dietary pattern. The association of these 2 factors on hypertension and its complications is considered here. As wine polyphenols exert a vasorelaxing action, they might positively influence the hemodynamic situation of these patients. These effects could be enhanced by dietary constituents, such as garlic, onions, and olive oil, which are widely employed in Mediterranean cooking. By evaluating many studies…

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension from the perspective of patients with pulmonary embolism

2018

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a rare but feared long-term complication of acute pulmonary embolism (PE), although CTEPH may occur in patients with no history of symptomatic venous thromboembolism. It represents the most severe presentation of the so-called 'post-PE syndrome', a phenomenon of permanent functional limitations after PE caused by deconditioning after PE or ventilatory or circulatory impairment as a result of unresolved pulmonary artery thrombi. Because the post-PE syndrome may occur in up to 50% of PE survivors, and CTEPH tends to have an insidious and non-specific clinical presentation, CTEPH is often not diagnosed or diagnosed after a very long dela…

Unilateral Accessory Sacroiliac Joint with Bone Marrow Edema Mimicking Sacroiliitis.

2018

Accessory sacroiliac joint (SIJ) is described as a common anatomical variant, identified in 13–18% and up to 40% of the general population1,2. It can be unilateral or bilateral and is related to aging, obesity, or women with multiple deliveries2,3. The patient, a 53-year-old white woman, presented with low back pain and left buttock pain for 6 months. She had no fever and local pressure on left SIJ reproduced …
