Migraine headaches in adolescents: a student population-based study in Monreale.

1995

We assessed the prevalence of migraine headaches in an epidemiological survey of an 11 to 14-year-old student population. Migraine headaches were classified on the basis of questionnaires and neurological examination using the operational diagnostic criteria of the International Headache Society. Prevalence of migraine without aura (IHS code 1.1) was 2.35%; that of migraine with aura (IHS code 1.2) was 0.62%. Migraine without aura was equally distributed among males and females, whereas migraine with aura was preponderant in the female cohort. The prevalence of migraine headaches in males was constant through the ages studied, whereas the prevalence of migraine headaches in females reached…

Traumatic dental injuries among schoolchildren in Valencia, Spain.

2010

Aim: The aim of the present study was to identify some factors related to the occurrence of dental trauma in mixed and permanent dentition. Prevalence of pressure ulcers in the paediatric population and in primary health care: An epidemiological study conducted in Spain.

2018

Abstract Aim The primary goal of this study was to estimate the prevalence of pressure ulcers in the paediatric population cared for in primary health care. Materials The data of this epidemiological study were extracted from the records of the 24 departments that attended to an approximate population of 1 million inhabitants between 0 and 18 years old from 2012 to 2015. The study included children requiring assistance to reduce pressure ulcer incidence. The paediatric population was categorised into neonates and infants (0–2 years), young child (3–6 years), child (7–12 years) and adolescents (13–18 years). The primary outcome was information on the prevalence of pressure ulcers. Secondary …

Epidemiology of urticaria in German children

2020

Background To date, robust epidemiological metrics as well as data on comorbidity in pediatric urticaria are lacking. They form the basis for the design of efficient healthcare. Methods Retrospective study to analyze epidemiological data in pediatric urticaria. The analysis is based on routine data of a health insurance company operating throughout Germany (DAK-Gesundheit). Insured people under 18 years of age who received at least one confirmed outpatient or inpatient urticaria diagnosis according to the ICD-10 classification in the years 2010 to 2015 were included in the analysis and compared to children without a corresponding diagnosis. Results Of 2.3 million insured individuals, 313,58…

Adjusted population attributable fractions and preventable potential of risk factors for childhood obesity.

2007

AbstractObjectiveA number of individual risk factors for childhood obesity have been identified, but only some of these are amenable to prevention. To assess the amount of cases in a general population attributable to these risk factors, adjusted population-attributable fractions were estimated.DesignCross-sectional study.SettingObligatory school entry examination in 2001/2002 in six Bavarian communities (Germany).Subjects5472 children at age 5–6 years.MeasuresAnthropometric measures were ascertained by public health nurses, and measures concerning sociodemographics, lifestyle and child behaviour such as child's daily meal frequency were obtained with self-administered parental questionnair…

Mould/dampness exposure at home is associated with respiratory disorders in Italian children and adolescents: the SIDRIA-2 Study

2005

Aims: To report on the relation between home mould and/or dampness exposure and respiratory disorders in a large sample of children and adolescents in Italy, accounting for age at time of exposure. Methods: 20 016 children (mean age 7 years) and 13 266 adolescents (mean age 13 years) completed questionnaires on indoor exposures and respiratory symptoms/diseases. Statistical analyses were adjusted for sex, age, questionnaire's compiler, area of residence, season of interview, parental educational status, family history of asthma, rhinitis, eczema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, presence of gas water heaters, passive smoking, pets, and active smoking (only for adolescents). Astigmatism in infancy and childhood.

2000

ABSTRACT Purpose: To evaluate the prevalence of astigmatism In infancy and childhood In a Spanish population. Methods: A total of 478 children with astigmatism from Valencia Province, Spain were examined. The patients, ranging in age from 2-1 2 years, were classified into groups according to age. Astigmatism error and axis orientation were determined using noncyclopeglc retlnoscopy over each eye. Results: The overall prevalence of astigmatism (5=1.00 diopter of cylinder) decreased In relation to increasing age from 44.3% to 5.2%. The prevalence of against-the-rule astigmatism decreased from 61.5% (at 2 years) to 33.4% (at 12 years), with-the-rule astigmatism increased In prevalence from 23.…

Prevalence and risk factors of post-polio syndrome in a cohort of polio survivors.

2005

Abstract Objective To investigate frequency and associated factors of post polio syndrome (PPS) in an Italian cohort of people with prior poliomyelitis. Methods We screened subjects admitted for poliomyelitis at the paediatric hospital of the University of Palermo during the time frame 1945–1960. Patients who developed PPS were identified through a structured questionnaire and a neurologic examination. PPS diagnosis was made according to specified diagnostic criteria. Frequency of PPS was calculated in the selected cohort of polio survivors. The association with the investigated risk factors (sex, age at onset of polio, extension and severity of polio, education, associated diseases, cigare…

Gender-related differences in serum uric acid in treated hypertensive patients from central and east European countries: findings from the Blood Pres…

2019

OBJECTIVE: Hyperuricemia has been associated with high blood pressure (BP) values, diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome and chronic kidney disease (CKD). In the present study, we assessed the gender-related relationships between serum uric acid (SUA) and cardionephrometabolic variables in central and east European hypertensive patients. METHODS: A total of 3206 treated hypertensive patients with available SUA levels from the BP-CARE study was analyzed. Correlations among SUA, BP values, BP control, diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome and CKD were performed according to gender. RESULTS: Twenty-five percent of the whole population showed hyperuricemia (28% in women and 23% in men). These p…

Fatores que influenciam a ocorrência de otite media entre crianças sicilianas com infecções de vias aéreas superiores

2016

ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: Upper respiratory tract infection is a nonspecific term used to describe an acute infection involving the nose, paranasal sinuses, pharynx and larynx. Upper respiratory tract infections in children are often associated with Eustachian tube dysfunction and complicated by otitis media, an inflammatory process within the middle ear. Environmental, epidemiologic and familial risk factors for otitis media (such as sex, socioeconomic and educational factors, smoke exposure, allergy or duration of breastfeeding) have been previously reported, but actually no data about their diffusion among Sicilian children with upper respiratory tract infections are available. OBJECTIVE: T…
