OP0089 METABOLIC SYNDROME IS COMMON AROUND THE TIME OF EARLY RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS DIAGNOSIS AND ASSOCIATIONS VARY BY SEX AND MENOPAUSAL STATUS: RESUL…

2019

Background Prevalence studies of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in early rheumatoid arthritis (ERA) are sparse and estimates are variable. Differences by sex and menopausal status have not been formally assessed. Objectives We estimated prevalence and factors associated with MetS in ERA patients treated in routine practice settings. Variations by sex, and by menopausal status were also examined. Methods Cross-sectional data were analyzed from patients meeting 1987 or 2010 ACR/EULAR RA criteria enrolled in the Canadian Early Arthritis Cohort (CATCH) from January 2007-March 2017. CATCH is a prospective multicenter observational study of patients diagnosed and treated for early inflammatory arthrit…

The prevalence of bipolar disorders in the general population - a growing trending topic?

2015

report the first meta-analysis of theprevalence of bipolar disorder (BD) from population-based studies. Strengths of the manuscript include theuse of suitable methods of analysis, reporting both annualand lifetime prevalence rates, and providing separatedata for bipolar subtypes I and II. The latter is relevantbecause type II is not simply a milder or minor form of BD.This publication is of considerable interest, firstlybecause it confirms that the frequency of BD in thegeneral population is low and closer to the conservativeestimates of 1-2%, as suggested by historical data.

Background: Change in the prevalence of raised blood pressure could be due to both shifts in the entire distribution of blood pressure (representing the combined effects of public health interventions and secular trends) and changes in its high-blood-pressure tail (representing successful clinical interventions to control blood pressure in the hypertensive population). Our aim was to quantify the contributions of these two phenomena to the worldwide trends in the prevalence of raised blood pressure. Methods: We pooled 1018 population-based studies with blood pressure measurements on 88.6 million participants from 1985 to 2016. We first calculated mean systolic blood pressure (SBP), mean dia…

Incidence and lifetime prevalence of Bell's palsy in two Sicilian municipalities

1996

Introduction - In a door-to-door two-phase survey of common neurologic diseases conducted in two Sicilian municipalities, we investigated the incidence and the lifetime prevalence of Bell's palsy (BP). Material & methods - During phase 1, we administered a screening instrument for facial palsy to 11,901 adult persons. During phase 2, study neurologists using specified diagnostic criteria evaluated those subjects who screened positive. Results - We found 73 subjects who had experienced BP during their life. The lifetime prevalence as of November 1, 1987, was 642.8 cases per 100,000 population age 15 years and above. The prevalence increased with age and was similar in men and women. Eighteen…

DHEA, DHEAS and PCOS.

2014

Approximately 20-30% of PCOS women demonstrate excess adrenal precursor androgen (APA) production, primarily using DHEAS as a marker of APA in general and more specifically DHEA, synthesis. The role of APA excess in determining or causing PCOS is unclear, although observations in patients with inherited APA excess (e.g., patients with 21-hydroxylase deficient congenital classic or non-classic adrenal hyperplasia) demonstrate that APA excess can result in a PCOS-like phenotype. Inherited defects of the enzymes responsible for steroid biosynthesis, or defects in cortisol metabolism, account for only a very small fraction of women suffering from hyperandrogenism or APA excess. Rather, women wi…

COVID-19 Infection Process in Italy and Spain: Are Data Talking? Evidence From ARMA and Vector Autoregression Models

2020

COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) has spread successfully worldwide in a matter of weeks. After the example of China, all the affected countries are taking hard-confinement measures to control the infection and to gain some time to reduce the significant amount of cases that arrive at the hospital. Although the measures in China reduced the percentages of new cases, this is not seen in other countries that have taken similar measures, such as Italy and Spain. After the first weeks, the worry was whether or not the healthcare system would collapse rather than its response to the patient's needs who are infected and require hospitalization. Using China as a mirror of what could happen in ou…

Visual Impairment Is Associated With Depressive Symptoms—Results From the Nationwide German DEGS1 Study

2018

Introduction: Visual impairment is associated with a variety of co-morbidities including physical and mental health in industrial countries. Our aim is to examine associations between self-reported impairment and depressive symptoms in the German population. Methods: The point prevalence of self-reported visual impairment in Germany was computed using data from the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for adults from 2008 to 2011 (N=7.783, 50.5% female, age range 18-79 years). Visual impairment was surveyed by two questions, one for seeing faces at a distance of 4 meters and one for reading newspapers. Depressive symptoms were evaluated with the PHQ-9 questionnaire and two-week pr…

Knowledge about diabetes mellitus among Polish medical students

2020

Introduction. Due to high prevalence of diabetes mellitus all over the world it is essential for students who will become doctors of different specialties to possess a basic knowledge of it in this field. This pilot surveybased study was designed to assess diabetes related knowledge among faculty of medicine students from all of the medical universities in Poland. Materials and methods. Students were invited to fulfill the questionnaire during Students’ Diabetology Conference and via the Internet (social media). The survey consisted of questions about respondent’s age and personal history of diabetes and diabetes related knowledge (etiology, symptoms, risk factors, complications and treatme…

Validation study of Italian version of inventory for déjà vu experiences assessment (I-IDEA): A screening tool to detect déjà vu phenomenon in Italia…

2017

The Inventory Déjà Vu Experiences Assessment (IDEA) is the only screening instrument proposed to evaluate the Déjà vu (DV) experience. Here, we intended to validate the Italian version of IDEA (I-IDEA) and at the same time to investigate the incidence and subjective qualities of the DV phenomenon in healthy Italian adult individuals on basis of an Italian multicentre observational study. In this study, we report normative data on the I-IDEA, collected on a sample of 542 Italian healthy subjects aging between 18-70 years (average age: 40) with a formal educational from 1-19 years. From September 2013 to March 2016, we recruited 542 healthy volunteers from 10 outpatient neurological clinics i…
