A Nutritional Approach to the Prevention of Cancer: from Assessment to Personalized Intervention
2016
Among lifestyle factors, nutrition is one of the most important determinants of health, and represents a pivotal element of cancer risk. Nonetheless, epidemiological evidences of the relationship between several cancers and specific foods and nutrients is still inadequate, and solid conclusions are missing. Several epidemiological studies related increased consumption of high fat diet and the risk to develop different types of cancer. Indeed, caloric restriction without malnutrition is associated to cancer prevention, due to the reduction in the activity of pro-aging pathways, of inflammation in precancerous cells, and to the increase of the apoptosis of damaged cells. Food may be also the …
Strategie preventive e management odontoiatrico nel paziente a rischio di osteonecrosi delle ossa mascellari associata a farmaco
2017
Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) drug related is an uncommon but serious and debilitating disease, whose epidemiology and pathogenesis are still unclear. However, in the recent years, knowledge regarding ONJ risk factors has lead to substantial progress in ONJ prevention. Anti-resorptive medicines (e.g. bisphosphonates, denosumab) and anti-angiogenic medicines (e.g bevacizumab, sunitinib) are being used in the treatment of various cancers and in the treatment of several non-oncological conditions, mainly for the osteoporosis. Despite the higher frequencies of ONJ cases in cancer patients, ONJ is becoming more frequent in everyday practice in osteometabolic patients. This due to the higher num…
Emergenza criminale e diritto amministrativo. L’amministrazione pubblica dei beni confiscati
2017

Distinct HR expression patterns significantly affect the clinical behavior of metastatic HER2+ breast cancer and degree of benefit from novel anti-HE…
2020
We analyzed data from 738 HER2‐positive metastatic breast cancer (mbc) patients treated with pertuzumab‐based regimens and/or T‐DM1 at 45 Italian centers. Outcomes were explored in relation to tumor subtype assessed by immunohistochemistry (IHC). The median progression‐free survival at first‐line (mPFS1) was 12 months. Pertuzumab as first‐line conferred longer mPFS1 compared to other first‐line treatments (16 vs. 9 months, p = 0.0001), regardless of IHC subtype. Median PFS in second‐line (mPFS2) was 7 months, with no difference by IHC subtype, but it was more favorable with T‐DM1 compared to other agents (7 vs. 6 months, p = 0.03). There was no PFS2 gain in patients with tumors expressing b…
Beyond the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic: opportunities to optimize clinical trial implementation in oncology.
2021
Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic affected millions of people globally with lasting effects on society, patients, investigators and health institutions. Clinical trials, our best tool to improve cancer treatment for patients through testing the clinical value of a new treatment, have been affected by the pandemic. The pandemic footprint represents both a risk of compromising development of new therapies and an opportunity to elicit discussion over a portfolio of broader reforms, applicable irrespective of pandemics, in order to improve the design and implementation of clinical trials in oncology. The administrative load should be reduced, without affecting the quality of research and principle…

Lynch syndrome (LS) increases cancer risk. There is considerable individual variation in LS cancer occurrence, which may be moderated by lifestyle factors, such as body weight and physical activity (PA). The potential associations of lifestyle and cancer risk in LS are understudied. We conducted a retrospective study with cancer register data to investigate associations between body weight, PA, and cancer risk among Finnish LS carriers. The participants (n = 465, 54% women) self-reported their adulthood body weight and PA at 10-year intervals. Overall cancer risk and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk was analyzed separately for men and women with respect to longitudinal and near-term changes in …
Distinct Mutational Profile of Lynch Syndrome Colorectal Cancers Diagnosed under Regular Colonoscopy Surveillance
2021
Regular colonoscopy even with short intervals does not prevent all colorectal cancers (CRC) in Lynch syndrome (LS). In the present study, we asked whether cancers detected under regular colonoscopy surveillance (incident cancers) are phenotypically different from cancers detected at first colonoscopy (prevalent cancers). We analyzed clinical, histological, immunological and mutational characteristics, including panel sequencing and high-throughput coding microsatellite (cMS) analysis, in 28 incident and 67 prevalent LS CRCs (n total = 95). Incident cancers presented with lower UICC and T stage compared to prevalent cancers (p <
Physical activity and laryngeal cancer
2019
Although an active lifestyle physical has been convincingly associated with a decreased risk of developing many forms of cancers, including neck and head malignancies, uncertainty surrounds the relationship between physical activity (PA) and laryngeal carcinogenesis. Epidemiologic evidence, garnered from some well-conducted cross-sectional, prospective and retrospective studies, seemingly attests that the impact of PA may be not so straightforward in lowering laryngeal cancer risk as for other malignancies. Reasonable consensus has been reached that moderate-intensity PA may generate the larger potential benefits, whilst the effect of high-intensity PA appears more controversial and even co…
