Follow-up after urinary diversion.
1999
With modern forms of urinary diversion being widely employed during recent years, the awareness of possible complications and appropriate follow-up strategies gains rising importance and current follow-up strategies are reviewed herewith. Follow-up investigations after urinary diversion have to address possible surgical complications, metabolic changes as well as the risk of secondary malignancies in the incorporated bowel segments. The most important and possible deleterious surgical complication is upper tract dilation and obstruction following ureteroenteric anastomotic stenosis and occurs in 2–30% depending on the surgical technique and evaluated series. The most appropriate follow-up s…
A score model for the continuous grading of early allograft dysfunction severity
2014
Early allograft dysfunction (EAD) dramatically influences graft and patient outcomes. A lack of consensus on an EAD definition hinders comparisons of liver transplant outcomes and management of recipients among and within centers. We sought to develop a model for the quantitative assessment of early allograft function [Model for Early Allograft Function Scoring (MEAF)] after transplantation. A retrospective study including 1026 consecutive liver transplants was performed for MEAF score development. Multivariate data analysis was used to select a small number of postoperative variables that adequately describe EAD. Then, the distribution of these variables was mathematically modeled to assig…
Nonroutine Use of Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump in Cardiogenic Shock Complicating Myocardial Infarction With Successful and Unsuccessful Primary Percutan…
2018
Abstract Objectives The authors sought to compare outcomes of patients with myocardial infarction and cardiogenic shock (CS) treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with or without intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) support according to final epicardial flow in the infarct-related artery. Background A routine use of IABP is contraindicated in patients with myocardial infarction and CS. There are no data regarding the subpopulation of patients who may benefit from such support besides patients with mechanical complications of myocardial infarction. Methods Prospective nationwide registry data of patients with myocardial infarction and CS treated with PCI between 2003 and 2014 wer…
Multiple brown tumours of tertiary hyperparathyroidism in a renal transplant recipient: : a case report
2010
Tertiary Hyperparathyroidism (HPT) is an uncommon condition that affects patients with secondary HPT after a successful kidney transplant. Bone alterations are the main consequences of this endocrine condition, including the development of an osteolytic lesion called brown tumour. This paper reports an unusual case of multiple brown tumours located in the maxilla and mandible in a 58-year-old renal transplant recipient, with tertiary HPT. Incisional biopsies were performed and, in both samples, the histopathological diagnoses were giant cell lesions. Due to these diagnoses, the medical history of chronic renal failure, and high levels of serum calcium and PTH, lesions were diagnosed as mult…
Sentinel lymph node imaging in urologic oncology
2018
Lymph node (LN) metastases in urological malignancies correlate with poor oncological outcomes. Accurate LN staging is of great importance since patients can benefit from an optimal staging, accordingly aligned therapy and more radical treatments. Current conventional cross-sectional imaging modalities [e.g., computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)] are not accurate enough to reliably detect early LN metastases as they rely on size criteria. Radical lymphadenectomy, the surgical removal of regional LNs, is the gold standard of invasive LN staging. The LN dissection is guided by anatomic considerations of lymphatic drainage pathways of the primary tumor. Selection of pa…

Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty for Corneal Decompensation Secondary to Phakic Intraocular Lenses
2019
Purpose. To describe the surgical technique and clinical outcomes of bilensectomy (pIOL explant and phacoemulsification), followed by DMEK performed for bullous keratopathy secondary to pIOL.Methods. Seven eyes of seven patients, who developed corneal decompensation after pIOL implantation, underwent bilensectomy followed by DMEK in a two-step procedure. Main outcome measures included uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), refraction, endothelial cell density (ECD) at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months, and intraoperative and postoperative complications.Results. DMEK was performed at a mean time of 9.83 ± 8.23 months after bilensectomy. BCVA (log MAR) improved in all …
Chambered warm moist air eyelid warming devices – a review
2021
Background Eyelid warming is an important treatment for meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Specialized chambered devices, using warm moist air have been developed. Purpose To critically evaluate the literature on the safety and efficacy of chambered warm moist air devices in MGD treatment and pinpoint areas of future research. Methods PubMed and Embase were searched on 06 June 2021. The search term was ‘(warm OR heat OR steam OR goggle OR spectacle OR moist air) AND (meibomian OR MGD OR blepharitis OR eyelid OR dry eye OR DED)’. All relevant articles with available English full text were included. Results Eighteen articles assessing the application of chambered warm moist air eyelid warming…
