Auditory cortical and hippocampal local-field potentials to frequency deviant tones in urethane-anesthetized rats: An unexpected role of the sound fr…

2015

Abstract The human brain can automatically detect auditory changes, as indexed by the mismatch negativity of event-related potentials. The mechanisms that underlie this response are poorly understood. We recorded primary auditory cortical and hippocampal (dentate gyrus, CA1) local-field potentials to serial tones in urethane-anesthetized rats. In an oddball condition, a rare (deviant) tone ( p  = 0.11) randomly replaced a repeated (standard) tone. The deviant tone was either lower (2200, 2700, 3200, 3700 Hz) or higher (4300, 4800, 5300, 5800 Hz) in frequency than the standard tone (4000 Hz). In an equiprobability control condition, all nine tones were presented at random ( p  = 0.11). Diffe…

Use in clinical practice of an automated screening method of diabetic retinopathy that can be derived using a diagnostic artificial intelligence syst…

2020

Abstract Background and Objective To compare the diagnostic performance of an autonomous diagnostic artificial intelligence (AI) system for the diagnosis of derivable diabetic retinopathy (RDR) with manual classification. Materials and Methods Patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes participated in a diabetic retinopathy (RD) screening program between 2011–2012. 2 images of each eye were collected. Unidentifiable retinal images were obtained, one centered on the disc and one on the fovea. The exams were classified with th e autonomous AI system and manually by anonymous ophthalmologists. The results of the AI system and manual classification were compared in terms of sensitivity and specif…

Stratified exercise therapy by physical therapists in primary care is feasible in patients with knee osteoarthritis

2018

Background There is strong evidence that exercise therapy is effective in reducing pain and activity limitations in knee osteoarthritis (OA), but effect sizes are low to moderate. Stratified exercise therapy tailored to clinically relevant subgroups of patients is expected to optimise treatment effects in a cost-effective manner. Objectives This study aimed to explore the feasibility of a newly developed model of stratified exercise therapy in primary care. Methods A mixed method design was used, consisting of an uncontrolled pretest-posttest design and a process evaluation. Eligible patients visiting a participating primary care physical therapist (PT) were included. Based on our model, pa…

Adaptation and Refinement of Validated Risk Screening Tools in the Spanish Healthcare System

2013

Abstract The aim of this study is to develop a tool to screen elders at risk of hospital readmissions adapted to Spanish target population. The development of this new tool is based on the validated instrument The Community Assessment Risk Screen – CARS –, which is being applied in a sample of 1.000 older patients. The adaptation and refinement of CARS is being carried out through the compilation of new potential variables from primary care clinicians to predict patients at risk of readmissions. The introduction of this new instrument adapted to Spanish target population will provide a potential tool to identify prematurel y patients at risk of hospital readmissions.

Spanish consensus on the physical health of patients with depressive disorders

2014

Comorbidity between depression and physical illnesses is very common and has a significant impact on the health and management of the patient. With the support of the Sociedades Espanolas de Psiquiatria y Psiquiatria Biologica, and Sociedad Espanola de Medicos de Atencion Primaria (SEMERGEN) a consensus was prepared on physical health in patients with depression and is summarized in the present work. The literature review highlighted the high frequency of cardiovascular and endocrine-metabolic disorders in patients with depression such as diabetes and obesity, thus making the primary and secondary prevention recommendations for patients with cardiovascular or metabolic risk applicable to pa…

Renal resistive index: Beyond the hemodynamics

2020

We read with great interest the original article entitled “Prognostic significance of the renal resistive index in the primary prevention of type II diabetes” by Delsart et al1 In this issue of The Journal, the authors interestingly underlined the prognostic value of renal resistive index (RRI) in diabetic subjects and its role as an independent predictor of a first cardiovascular or renal event. Similar conclusions were previously obtained by others in different subsets of patients (hypertension, chronic kidney disease, or heart failure), in which intrarenal hemodynamic alterations showed to be independent predictors of cardiovascular events. It is likely that the mechanisms underlying ren…
