Risk of Colorectal High-Grade Dysplasia and Cancer in a Prospective Observational Cohort of Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

2013

International audience; BACKGROUND AND AIMS:: There is an unclear risk of colonic high-grade dysplasia (HGD) and colorectal cancer (CRC) among patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) treated with immunosuppressants. We analyzed data on CRC development among patients with IBD enrolled in the observational cohort Cancers et Surrisque Associé aux Maladies Inflammatoires Intestinales En France (CESAME). METHODS:: We followed and collected data from 19,486 patients with IBD (60.3% with Crohn's disease, 30.1% receiving thiopurine therapy) enrolled in CESAME from May 2004 and June 2005, and followed until December 2007. When the study began, 2841 patients (14.6%) were characterized as havin…

Evidence for early activation of primary motor cortex and SMA after electrical lower limb stimulation using EEG source reconstruction

2006

Compared to median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP), less is known about activity evoked by nerve stimulation of the lower limb. To understand the mechanisms and the physiology of sensor- and motor control it is useful to investigate the sensorimotor functions as revealed by a standardized functional status. Therefore, we investigated SEPs of the lower limb in 6 healthy male volunteers. For each side, tibial and peroneal nerves were stimulated transcutaneously at the fossa poplitea. The tibial nerves were also stimulated further distally at the ankle joint. Source localization was applied to 64-EEG-channel data of the SEPs. In contrast to somatosensory areas, which are activated …

The human hepatic asialoglycoprotein receptor is a target antigen for liver-infiltrating T cells in autoimmune chronic active hepatitis and primary b…

1990

Autoantibodies to the human hepatic asialoglycoprotein receptor have been found in nearly 50% of the sera of patients with autoimmune chronic active hepatitis and in 15% of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis. In this study we demonstrate that the human hepatic asialoglycoprotein receptor is also a target antigen for T cell-mediated immune responses. Peripheral blood lymphocytes of 37% (7 of 19) of patients with autoimmune chronic active hepatitis and 33% (2 of 6) of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis showed a proliferative response to highly purified human hepatic asialoglycoprotein receptor, whereas no proliferation was found with peripheral blood lymphocytes of patients with chr…

Primary motor area contribution to attentional reorienting after distraction

2008

The anatomical structures involved in distraction-related processing in the auditory domain were investigated using magnetoencephalography. Participants performed a duration-discrimination task on a sequence of 200 and 400 ms long tones. Infrequent (12%) task-irrelevant pitch changes resulted in slower discriminative responses and more errors. Event-related potentials to these changes show an increased N1, a mismatch negativity, a P3a, and a reorienting negativity. The event-related magnetic fields revealed focal activities in superior and medial temporal areas in the N1/mismatch negativity time range. No significant activity was found in the P3a interval. In the reorienting negativity inte…

Frequent attender profiles: Different clinical subgroups among frequent attender patients in primary care

1997

Psychiatric and physical morbidity among frequently attending patients in primary care is high. However, very few efforts have been made to sort out the complex patterns of problems these patients have. We developed a clinical grouping of these patients. Our sample consisted of 67 frequent attenders. The measures included physical and psychiatric illnesses, presenting symptoms, sociodemographic data, psychosocial situation, level of distress, global functioning, experienced life satisfaction, illness attribution, and current psychiatric treatment. We identified five groups with different profiles: (1) patients with entirely physical illnesses; (2) patients with clear psychiatric illnesses; …

Tumor in the Horseshoe Kidney: Clinical Implications and Review of Embryogenesis

1992

We report on 3 patients with tumor in a horseshoe kidney, 1 of whom had bilateral tumor (renal cell cancer on the right side and urothelial cancer on the left side). Tumors that arise predominantly in the bridge of a horseshoe kidney can mimic the symptoms of an intra-abdominal disease process. Besides routine diagnostic procedures, angiography is essential to plan the surgical approach, which in principle should be organ-sparing. The literature of the embryology of the horseshoe kidney was reviewed for a relationship between the abnormal renal development and the site of tumorigenesis, and for development of a key for the wide variation of blood supply. Recently reported data suggest that …

A validation study of an Italian version of the "ID Migraine".

2007

Background.—Migraine is a highly prevalent and disabling disease which is substantially underdiagnosed in primary care. Recently, the ID Migraine, a self-administered questionnaire, consisting of only 3 items, was shown to be a valid and reliable screening instrument for migraine in primary care in the United States. Objective.—The aim of the present study was to validate an Italian version of the “ID Migraine” questionnaire. Methods.—Two hundred and twenty-two consecutive headache patients referring to 8 headache centers in Sicily (Italy) completed an Italian version of the ID Migraine. The responses to the questionnaire were compared with the diagnosis of headache made by a headache speci…

Modulation of premotor mirror neuron activity during observation of unpredictable grasping movements.

2004

Using transcranial magnetic stimulation, we explored the properties of premotor mirror neurons during the passive observation of a reaching-grasping movement in human subjects. Two different experiments were run using video-clips as visual stimuli. Video-clips showed a normally performed (control stimulus) or an anomalous reaching-grasping movement executed by delaying the time of the appearance of the maximal finger aperture (experiment 1), or substituting it with an unpredictable closure (experiment 2). Motor evoked potentials were recorded at different time-points during the observation of the video-clips. Profiles of cortical excitability were drawn and compared with the kinematic profi…

Release of premotor activity after repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation of prefrontal cortex

2008

In the present study we aimed to explore by means of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) the reciprocal influences between prefrontal cortex (PFC) and premotor cortex (PMC). Subjects were asked to observe on a computer monitor different pictures representing manipulations of different kind of tools. They had to produce a movement (go condition) or to keep the resting position (no-go condition) at the appearance of different cue signals represented by different colors shown alternatively on the hands manipulating the tools or on the picture background. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were collected at the offset of the visual stimuli before and after a 10 minute, 1 Hz rTMS tra…

Retinol oxidation to retinoic acid in human thyroid glandular cells.

2014

Abstract Retinoic acid is regarded as the retinol metabolite that controls proliferation and differentiation of epithelial cells. In the present study, we investigated the potential role of xanthine dehydrogenase (XDH) in retinoic acid biosynthesis in human thyroid glandular cells (HTGC). In particular, we observed that cellular retinoids binding proteins (CRBPs) are also implicated in the biosynthetic pathway leading to retinoic acid formation in primary cultures of HTGC, as we have already reported for human mammary epithelial cells (HMEC). After partial protein purification, the enzyme responsible for retinoic acid biosynthesis was identified and quantified as XDH by immunoassay, by its …
