Molecular characterization of cyclic and obligate parthenogens in the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi (L.)

Holocyclic clones of the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) reproduce by cyclic parthenogenesis, whereas anholocyclic individuals are obligate parthenogens. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and random amplified polymorphic DNA markers in R . padi as well as plasmid DNA markers of its bacterial endosymbiont, Buchnera aphidicola , were examined to determine the extent of genetic divergence between clones with these differing breeding systems. These analyses revealed that cyclically parthenogenetic lineages possessed differing mtDNA and plasmid haplotypes than most obligately asexual clones. Characterization of a novel selenium methyltransferase from freshwater bacteria showing strong similarities with the calicheamicin methyltransferase

A novel group of Se-methyltransferases is presented. The genetic determinant, named mmtA, which revealed this group was isolated from selenite and selenate-resistant freshwater bacteria. E. coli expressing mmtA and grown with a Se supplement emitted dimethyl selenide (DMSe) and dimethyl diselenide (DMDSe). Phylogenetic analysis divided MmtA-like bacterial sequences into two clusters, one grouping MmtA with S- and O-methyltransferases, and one grouping UbiE C-methyltransferases. Se methylation by some of these MmtA phyletic neighbours was investigated.

International audience; From a survey of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi in agro-ecosystems in Central Europe and West Africa, an undescribed species of Acaulospora was recovered and is presented here under the epithet Acaulospora sieverdingii. Spores of A. sieverdingii are 60-80 mu m in diam, hyaline to subhyaline to rarely light yellow and have multiple pitted depressions on the outer spore wall similar to those known for A. alpina, A. cavernata, A. paulinae and A. scrobiculata. The pits in A. sieverdingii are tiny and often irregular and resemble small dots (0.8-1.8 mu m) or lines (0.5-1.2 x 1.8-2.5 mu m). ABSTRACT In order to determine the specificities of PCR-based assays used for detecting Cryptosporidium parvum DNA, eight pairs of previously described PCR primers targeting six distinct regions of the Cryptosporidium genome were evaluated for the detection of C. parvum , the agent of human cryptosporidiosis, and C. muris , C. baileyi , and C. meleagridis , three Cryptosporidium species that infect birds or mammals but are not considered to be human pathogens. Hepatic stearoyl CoA desaturase (SCD) activity in chickens from a fat line is higher than that of chickens from a lean line and correlates with plasma triacylglycerol concentrations. Furthermore, in these lines, the hepatic SCD1 mRNA level is positively correlated with the adipose tissue weight. To analyze the contribution of the SCD1 gene in the regulation of adiposity in the early stages of triacylglycerol secretion, SCD1 coding sequence and antisense RNA expression vectors were transfected in LMH cells. The aim of this paper was to analyze the evolution of learning strategies of two groups of students, excellent and average, from 11 degrees of the UPV (Valencia/Spain) in their freshman year. We used the CEVEAPEU questionnaire. The results confirmed the availability of better strategies of excellent students and also the existence of evolutionary patterns in which affective-emotional strategies decrease, such as value of the task or internal attributions, and that others increase, such as extrinsic motivation and external attributions.
