2020
It should be emphasized that no princess of the Silesian Piasts was sent to a convent against her will, or when she was underage. In fact, the motives why they went there remain unknown. Altogether, of 166 princesses, 44 (26%) chose life in a cloister. Of the above number, the daughters of Upper Silesian princes constituted the majority (33%), with even more of them (40%) from the Opole principality. In most cases, the princesses became members of the Poor Clare community or the Cisterian Order, with only a few of them joining the Norbertan Order or Dominican sisters. A majority of Silesian princesses were promoted to high posts becoming prioresses or abbesses. Lower Silesian princess attai…

Multi-word Lexical Units Recognition in WordNet
2022
WordNet is a state-of-the-art lexical resource used in many tasks in Natural Language Processing, also in multi-word expression (MWE) recognition. However, not all MWEs recorded in WordNet could be indisputably called lexicalised. Some of them are semantically compositional and show no signs of idiosyncrasy. This state of affairs affects all evaluation measures that use the list of all WordNet MWEs as a gold standard. We propose a method of distinguishing between lexicalised and non-lexicalised word combinations in WordNet, taking into account lexicality features, such as semantic compositionality, MWE length and translational criterion. Both a rule-based approach and a ridge logistic regre…
A Stylistic Analysis of the English Translations of Machiavelli's The Prince: Mansfield, Skinner and Connell
2009
The Prince is counted among those political works which gave rise to modern political science. Linguists have shown how the writing technique, that makes The Prince a unique work, is one of the main instruments used by Machiavelli to persuade his addressee to adopt the political tactics he was recommending. On the basis of their Italian studies on The Prince, the paper analyses how Machiavelli’s style was transferred from Italian into English in the most recent and authoritative English translations by Harvey C. Mansfield (1985), Quentin Skinner & Russell Price (1989 [1988]) and William J. Connell (2005). Three significant passages of Machiavelli’s masterpiece and their translations have be…
Turystyczny przewodnik po Piekle Mikołaja Reja, czyli o międzyplanetarnych podróżach duszy ludzkiej
2020
The article deals with the complex issue of presenting the underworld in the Reja's Wizerunk. The author draws attention to the presence in the output of the old Polish poet of many visionary elements borrowed from the most varied traditions and religious systems. The popular pattern of searching for spiritual perfection, fixed in the archetype of the topographic movement of the hero (Latin: Homo viator) turns out to be particularly visible. It turns out that at the very foundations of this imaginative pattern there is an ancient doctrine or interplanetary wandering of the soul. Most of the work was focused on the description of XI songs of Reja’s WizerunV, where a description of hell appea…
